Just like its predecessor, a 2007 DC07 that I repaired myself every few years until it died in January 2023, the Animal is able to handle the dirt, hay, etc, that our boots bring in from daily farm work, as well as the copious amounts of hair from a Golden Retriever, a silky Calico, and my waist-length hair. I vacuum from one end of the house to the other, dumping the bin twice, reverse course, vacuum in the opposite direction and dump the bin one more time. Then I got the Dyson DC15 Animal that I was extremely happy with, it went 15 years and a few replacement parts. Finally the plastic aged out. Replaced with one of the cheap Dyson wannabe vacs, twice. Also not sure I'm happy about the new filtering, but the air that comes out of the vac seems to be extremely clean, that said it did from the DC15 as well. I'm happy I bought this, it actually was less expensive than the DC15 (in 2004) was and here we are nearly 20 years later. Biggest thing for me is not having the same substantial feel as the DC15 had and it doesn't roll on the rear wheels as well which you want to do when not actually using it. I think it's designed more towards hard floor vac and area rug use than our carpet that we honestly wish we didn't have and really want to replace, but it does work extremely well on our frieze carpet as well as the tile.

The Dyson - Ball Animal 3 has fantastic suction - as someone else said in their review - it could suck the chrome off a bumper - which is definitely it's best side. I am not completely happy with other aspects of vacuum - the ball design and the design of the hose. The ball does not lend itself to a particularly stable foundation. If you do not make a habit of firmly "planting" the handle/top part of the vacuum to the base in an upright position when not vacuuming, the vacuum will topple over. The ball and the stiffness of the hose also make it extremely difficult to vacuum stairs. But after leg bruises and nicks to my walls, I did purchase a second and completely different vacuum on Amazon that has almost as good suction (and three levels of suction), does not have the instability issue on the stairs and when cleaning the dust from window tracks. This other vacuum also breaks down to a much smaller size which also lends it well to dry messes on counters and craft workspaces and also my car (it has a rechargeable battery pack). If you do not have stairs and are willing to work with the instability of the ball, you cannot beat the suction of the Dyson. But truthfully, had I bought the other vacuum first (which was on sale by a lot, and was half the price of the Dyson (also on sale), I would not have bought the Dyson.

I am sure if the management and owner of Dyson saw and understood the struggles they would have no problem helping us out but we could not get passed the customer service rep on the phone who agreed with our position but was not able to assist. So, my recommendation would be, buyer beware. Stick to being impressed by the Dyson fans in the bathrooms and stay aware of the rest as the support is not there for the products should something occur before and after the 30-day warranty. Very sad as they took our money and did not want more of it frankly. Bad business!!!

While this is a decent vacuum in terms of the quality of the suction and the lack of tendency to clog, that's pretty much where the benefits for me end, other than the quality of the pet hair vacuuming attachment. Overall for a product coming from a company that touts itself as an engineering company, this isn't terrible well engineered, especially from an optimum function, usability and ergonomics standpoint. There are a number of very glaring shortcomings and a host of smaller, but still annoying others. The extension wand and hose design are two of the biggest things about this that are poor from a design standpoint, but especially ergonomics. The hose tension is way too high/strong, so you are constantly fighting with it to stay extended when you're using the wand and/or the pet attachment - so you waste energy fighting it and it's taxing on the hands to use for more than a couple of minutes, especially if you're like me and have nerve damage in your hands (or you likely would if you're old or arthritic) and you're trying to vacuum carpeted stairs for 10 minutes. You'll find you end up having to constantly either hold the main part of the vacuum with a hand or a foot to keep the vacuum from snapping back at you when you're using the hose and/or wand, because the hose tension is too high and pulls the body of the vacuum at you. Add in the wand function, which is annoying because it sits inside the hose, so you have to extend it and lock it into the end of the house to use it, especially with the attachments. Or, if you just want to use the hose, you have to pull the wand all the way out and detach it, before connecting attachments. This design is awful in my opinion. What's more, the way the wand/hose assembly sits inside the back of the handle of the vacuum, makes for a sloppy feeling handle when using in regular vacuum function, particularly side to side. You can feel the play between the overly flexible handle assembly and the hose in the back, which means you have to use more exertion than you should to move the vacuum around, especially side to side. I expect that with years of use, the handle, being an incomplete piece of plastic, will eventually snap off. Another major annoyance with this is the the lock mechanimsm to keep the vacuum upright is poor, it routinely disengages and the vacuum falls over, especially when using the wand/hose extended. I've had this fall over and ding furniture, hit me in the head Can't say I'm a fan of the ball assembly to be honest, it doesn't really help with mobility enough, likely because it's too big and creates too much of a pivot point relative to exertion. Because of its size, as many have noted, you can forget about getting it under furniture to vacuum. Coupled with the weight of this vacuum, it's not the easiest to maneuver. Another deficiency on this it the lack of a cord management. Once unwrapped to vacuum with, this has no clip to keep the cord up and out of the way, which forces you to spool the long cord in your non-vacuum pushing hand, so you don't trip, or roll over the cord continually with the vacuum.
Our last vacuum was a DC-07. Used it for 18 years. It was a great vacuum overall, and would still be going strong today, but my wife needs something easier to handle due to her bad back. She narrowed her choices down to two vacuums: the Ball Animal 3, and a competitor's. So as far as engineering and technology are concerned, the Ball Animal 3 is fantastic.The vacuum's Achille's heal, however, is its ergonomics. This is not an easy vacuum to use, and requires a fair amount of strength to push around. I'm 6'3" 250+ lbs, and by the time I'm finished vacuuming with the Ball Animal 3, my shoulder feels like it's going to fall off, and my back hurts for about a half hour afterwards, from the coccyx up to the middle. If *I'm* this stiff, sore, sweating like a pig, and gasping for air after using the vacuum, imagine what it must be like for my poor wife and her bad back! This vacuum does not "roll" or "glide" across the carpet, and frankly I also feel it's a lot harder to maneuver. On a positive note, though, the clutch mechanism is in a much more user-friendly location now (an electronic switch next to the power button versus having to bend over and manipulate a mechanical knob); but then Dyson goes and cancels it out by putting the suction adjustment slider in an even more inconvenient location than where the DC-07 clutch knob was. My wife likes the wand on this unit better than the DC-07. I disagree, but I do like that the tools can be directly attached to the hose now. That's probably the best improvement Dyson made, ergonomically speaking. Unfortunately, the main chassis/body still "follows" you around whenever you stretch the hose, getting in the way and making the job harder. The on-board storage of the tools isn't very good, either, and seems like it was more of an afterthought. The brush bar is much easier to remove on the Ball Animal 3. It's more of a sleeve that fits over the actual rotating mechanism, so no special tool is required to disconnect the drive belt from the roller bar. Lastly, both filters on the Ball Animal 3 are washable (the post-motor filter on the DC-07 wasn't washable and had to be replaced periodically, and was difficult to access).Now as for the construction of the Ball Animal 3, that remains in question. Some of the plastic, particularly in the handle and the flip-up wand end cap, is really flimsy and bends way too much. I feel like it's going to snap or permanently deform at any moment. However, being open-minded, perhaps the flexibiltiy helps _prevent_ the plastic from snapping. I don't know. Time will tell.I'm torn. On the one hand, I want the Ball Animal 3 to give us 18+ years of reliable service like the DC-07 did; but on the other hand, I am not looking forward to my wife and I (especially her) having to lug this thing around while using it. We may be back in the market sooner than later.

Also the small part that holds the attachments - there is a track on the vacuum where the instructions say to attach it.Off to rid my house of dust bunnies!
I have been interested in Dyson vacuums for a very long time but could never dedicate the resources to getting one. I have finally been able to do just that and this new Dyson animal 3 upright is fantastic. I'll skip to the most important part first how does it clean the answer is extremely well. The motorized brush head pulls up debris with ease and even on my most hard to clean carpet because it has multiple textures and thicknesses it excels and did it quicker than with my old vacuum and a better job.The negatives that I have on this are that the instructions to put it together are pretty minimal considering how much this thing cost. It does clean very well but I wonder about durability long-term it just doesn't feel as solid as my old vacuum. But if you absolutely positively need to have a clean space this will do just that better than probably any vacuum I have ever used

I bought this vacuum because it addressed two issues I had with the Animal 2, first the animal 2 would get stuck on some carpets that were especially dense. It also collected every hair over 6 inches on the brush roll.The good!! The Dyson ball animal 3 fixed both the above problems. It doesn't tangle almost any hair and if run for a bit will clear off any that does manage to hang on temporarily. It also allows you to bleed off suction by adjusting the switch on the cleaner head, so you can do most carpets and rugs you will encounter with just a simple adjustment.I bought the complete version because I wanted the array of attachments. It certainly out performs my cordless vacuums and the animal 2, in every area except convenience (and perhaps hardwood floors). And looking at the specs I would believe this statement also holds true for the new gen5 as well.The cons, it is heavyish, the hose is stiff and does fight a bit especially when it's new, it does relax with some use, but it is never going to be relaxed like a shop vac hose. You do have to put some thought into where you place it so the vacuum doesn't fall over.The photos of doing a staircase, only works like that if you have a landing. I don't so I have to get a little creative doing the stairs because it only can reach about half way up. But with a little thought the Dyson does just fine.All that being said I generally prefer using the wand and attachments to the stick vacuums. The wand is lighter and easier to deal with, and it has so much more suction.The other con, hard floors really do better with a soft roller, I'm 80 percent carpets 20 percent hard floor but if I was reversed this might not be the right vacuum. It still does hard floors, and you can turn the brush roll off if you are having scattering issues and it even comes with a hard floor tool that uses felt and bristles with the hose, but at the end of the day this is not a hard floor specialized vacuum. I do prefer both cordless vacuums with the soft roller on my lvp flooring, and honestly suction is just not all that important on hard floors so almost anything with a roller will work.I read some of the reviews that were dissatisfied with this vacuum and they do strike me as the comedy of errors. Dyson has been making this style vacuum for years making slight improvements every generation. This is possibly the best upright vacuum for carpets period. It has a lot of suction, it has an excellent brush assembly, that being said sometimes those things can lead to some difficulty to push, do you want it clean or easier to push. Also if you set the cleaner head to max suction on your carpet you are going to have to work harder, it may bog down on dense rugs, that's why it is adjustable. I have been able to use this vacuum easily on rugs my animal 2 stalled out on. I do have to adjust the cleaner head to high pile to do it.Overall I am very happy with this vacuum and I definitely appreciate the fact that it is so good at cleaning and very adaptable with the well thought out hose attachments. Dyson if your reading this my suggestion for the ball animal 4 would be a lift away function or at least a more convenient handle to carry the vacuum for stairs and maybe a slightly longer easier to use hose, and a turbine powered soft roller for the hose.
