I’ve had 3 ecobee 3 lite thermostats since 2016. In September one of them started to fail and was reading the temperature in the room about 7 degrees too high. I then ordered a new unit on September 27th and all was well. Then on Christmas Day the unit started calling for heat when it shouldn’t have and eventually shorted and overloaded the wires sending 40 volts back to the actuator for that zone (I have a 4 zone hydronic boiler). This caused the pop top actuator to short out and locked the valve in the open position. I spent the entire night manually opening and closing the valve so that my 3 daughters wouldn’t roast or freeze while they slept (it was 6 degrees out with -15 windchill). My HVAC repairman was out today finally to replace the actuator and fix the ... MoreI’ve had 3 ecobee 3 lite thermostats since 2016. My HVAC repairman was out today finally to replace the actuator and fix the fried wiring. After we were done troubleshooting the issue, it was determined that the unit caused the damage to my system costing me $302 in repair and a lot of sleep. After being on hold with ecobee customer service for 1 hour and 43 minutes, I was told it shouldn’t do that but we’ll send you a replacement in the next week or so. Needless to say, the absolute minimum was done here. Even after my detailed explanation of the issue and resolution done by me and the professional that installed the first unit in 2016, I don’t even recall getting a muffled “sorry”. I’m beyond frustrated with ecobee and embarrassed that I’ve recommended their thermostats to family and friends over the years.

It's a total upgrade from the Smart Thermostat that I used to have, since I bought this house in 2014. That's the reason why I asked from an upgrade in the first place. Because it began acting up, and it logs me out of the app all the time. Then I have a hard time loggingback in. And sometimes it doesn't respond at all when I try to change the settings, even if it's not on the community event period. Now, I have a better Thermostat I think, so far, so good. No problems with it and it's easy to learn how to set it and play around with it with all the different configurations you please. I'm happy with it, and recommend it, if you have an outdated thermo unit. I guess "ecobee" products are good. I couldn't figure out why my furnace was overheating the house to 85°F in the middle of the night. Turns out, an extra sensor accidentally fell into the garbage and was taken out with the trash. Since the Ecobee averages temps among sensors, it was averaging the outside and inside temps and trying to heat up the house since it was cold outside. I had to figure out this on my own since I couldn't get assistance online or from the app.Overall this could be a nice piece of equipment but it isn't terribly user-friendly and help isn't easy to find.

I have installed several 3lites in various homes for myself and for friends and family. Their operation seems flawless; setup is a snap; and it works fine with Alexa. But, and this is a big fat "but". It DOES NOT WORK with Apple HomeKit even though the box says it does. Mine is the only one where I have wanted to try it. The documentation on the ecobee site is hopelessly wrong; it describes things that are just plain not there; it shows menu items that are nonexistent. There is no scan code or 8-digit code on the box, in the instructions, or on the thermostat itself, contrary to what they say.. Phone support WAS good at one time, but now they have a lot of people with accents that are incomprehensible. This is after very long "hold" times.I have gone through their steps several times; tech support as (allegedly) sent firmware upgrades to my thermostat, all to no avail. Even they are left scratching their heads.I recommend this thermostat with only one reservation. if you are in the HomeKit environment, don't get this model of Ecobee. If that is not a condition, then, get one of these, put it in, and enjoy it; it won't let you down.Note: I'd just pay the money and switch to an "enhanced" Ecobee, but I have a two stage heat pump system, and the Enhanced doesn't support it. The top model is out of the running because I do not want yet another microphone for Alexa in the house, and shutting it off illuminated a light I do not want glowing in my corridor all the time.
I've had my Ecobee3 Lite for a while now so I've had it long enough to have a good opinion of it. It looks nice, and operates my heat pump as expected. I like the programmable features and setting schedules. My main issue is it's very inconsistent with temp readings. I have 2 different temperature sensors that I place beside it to get an idea of the area temp. I'm in Florida and when they both read the same room temp, the Ecobee is one degree warmer. I change the temperature correction to compensate, and it works fine for a few hours then it's back to same temp difference. I go back and forth on the temp correction, up and down. During the cooler months, I had it set at -1 to match the sensors. The old thermostat didn't have this issue at all. During the cooler months, I had it set at -1 to match the sensors. The old thermostat didn't have this issue at all. It read consistently the same as the other sensors. Other times, I can have it set to cool at 77* and the Ecobee temp will show 78* and still not be on. Eventually it will turn on and cool to the setpoint. It doesn't always do that, so it's hard to say why. I can tell when it's not working right because I can feel the room get stuffy. One thing I've also noticed is that if I place one of my other temp sensors near the Ecobee, it will read almost 1 degree warmer and will cool down when I move it away. I'm thinking the Ecobee puts off a lot of heat and is making its internal sensor fluctuate. I've reset, rebooted, and everything else I can find info on and it's getting worse.
TDLR: To anyone considering buying an EcoBee 3 lite. Avoid this product, I was a user for over a year. Moved to a new house that had an existing EcoBee. Unit failed, caused HVAC damage. Issue was resolve for $$$. I didn't even mind that. However EcoBee does not stand by their 3 year warranty claims. Buy anything else.I had around 6k worth of repairs I needed to have done on my HVAC system due to a Short. I used them for a year at my old place. Personally loved it and had a great experience. However now that this new Ecobee at my new home caused such an issue and they refuse to standby their Product.I really suggest you stay away and do not buy this product unless you want to risk damaging your HVAC systems and the company refusing to standby their product.I have an open BBB compliant, and Customer service case. They just do not care about their customers.
I previously had a Carrier Cor thermostat made by ecobee. My new home has a Bryant system (also Carrier made) and they offered the ecobee unit. The only thing I found confusing was the scheduler - you CAN get the hang of it. My Cor unit had a more intuitive scheduler. The integration with Homekit is flawless so far. I have an extensive Homekit setup including a Bridge so this unit made things easier without having to use the Bridge for integration. The system offers add on sensors that are provoded and supported by ecobee. With rules in Homekit, you can also leverage the sensors in your existing Apple products like Home pods. The system has easy features and options for novices and options for IT techies like me. I highly recommend the product.
My thermostat went bad after 9 months. I've had 2 AC techs look at my HVAC system because Ecobee insists it's not their product with issue. Both techs have told me it's a bad thermostat and put it in writing. It sends a continuous voltage signal to the unit which doesn't allow it to turn off. Should be a lovely power bill. You can not get through on customer service phone lines, and their support page is a joke. 1st time took them 1 1/2 DAYS to get back to me, and they expected me to be in the same place as the thermostat at that time. 2nd time I spent 1 1/2 hours on hold, when I got them I went through the same runaround with them claiming it wasn't their problem. If you want a good-looking thermostat with remote sensors that you can use from your phone, this is a fine choice. It also stores your use data, which is great. Just realize that it’s not easy to save money by installing a “smart” thermostat. I bought another system (SwitchBot meter and hub) to track just exactly what the Ecobee was doing. My conclusion is that you should not use the automatic staging setting. Instead, use manual staging because the Ecobee is not as smart as it thinks it is. It was somehow getting stuck and would run the fan without doing anything else while telling me that it was. Also, be careful about the minimum temperature for running the compressor instead of just using auxiliary heat immediately. Terrible thermostat. I did my research first and I also used to have a google nest, I know how it should be and I'm not inexperienced in setting these up. Yet it has so many issues I might as well not have a thermostat. I'm not exaggerating. It doesn't measure temperature accurately ever - and no ecobee support, i'm not near any windows or vents- by a margin of 4 or more degrees. From there it continues to have issues with just sensing the temperature accurately taht I'm almost always having to take a laser thermometer and manually adjust it myself.Worse than that is that at least once a week I need to reset it entirely to varying success, because my AC will just stop, or come out hot. the compressor is fine, the actual AC itself is fine, I've had more than one ... MoreTerrible thermostat. What happens is some weird misread when you change *anything*. So if I try to turn AC on or off from my phone or from the device itself it'll somehow misread that as disconnect from ac. It's a nightmare. Also keep in mind ecobee support is all through fb messenger, so if you don't use facebook anymore good luck. And even then they're not helpful at all and their whole job seems to be just gaslighting you into thinkin there's nothing wrong when their product is defective (in my case it's even possible that I got send a lemon, and they could just replace it as it's in warranty, but nope they refuse to)Seems like ecobee (in app) is ALWAYS experiencing technical difficulties too, and have yet to get or findo ut how to get any of the reports that it's advertised as giving.
