I was happy to find these in stock at my local Best Buy. My HVAC technician had just installed an ecobee which came with one Smart Sensor. Adding just these two made the ecobee much more responsive. The Ecobee SmartSensor is a combination room occupancy sensor and temperature sensor. This lets you get temperature readings for muliple rooms or places in your home and allows your thermostat to better ensure that each room gets at least to the set temperature. The occupancy sensor part lets you make decisions based on whether there's actually someone in a room who would be affected by the temperature there. This is nice because if there's a room that gets much hotter than the rest of the house in the summer time, but is not used very often, you don't need to run the AC all the time to get the average down or get that room cool - just when there's actually someone there. If you don't want the occupancy behavior, you can just turn the sensor to face away from the ... MoreThe Ecobee SmartSensor is a combination room occupancy sensor and temperature sensor. It still measure temperature, but will always think the room is empty. The sensors work well and do a good job of tracking temperature. They matched up with the existing temperature-only sensors that I was using. These are battery powered, so don't need to be based by an outlet. The sensors can be wall mounted or placed on a flat surface. I would recommend placing on a flat surface like a table or bookshelf. The reason being size. It seems like Ecobee's new line is not very unobtrusive. As you don't interact with these, they should really fade into the background. These are not wifi sensors, so it is not straightforward to use them standalone. They connect to an Ecobee thermostat as the "base station" and you interact that way. Once nice things about these is that they have IFTTT capability - albeit throught the thermostat. There's a third party app that can expose the sensors directly, which is nice when you want to script home automation actions based on the occupancy sensor beyond controlling temperature. Right now I can get lights to turn on and off automatically when someone enters and exits a room. My next step is setting brightness of the lights going on/off based on time of day, so I avoid potentially waking those who are sleeping.

I have several of these in two houses. One house is mostly A/C year round and the other is in the North where only the heat is controlled by ecobee. In both circumstances these sensors really seem to make the ecobee thermostat create a more comfortable environment throughout the entire house. While these can’t do anything to correct improper vents (too little or to much), they are pretty amazing in evening out the A/C or heat as much as possible simply by controlling the thermostat (it uses an average of all sensors to attempt to get the ideal temperature). These are essential in utilizing the automatic away and follow me features of the ecobee thermostat. As an added bonus, ecobee natively supports HomeKit. If you have an ecobee with the older style sensors. Get these! They are an upgrade for sure! They are faster to recognize people in the room and are more accurate in regards to temperature. My old sensors wouldn’t recognize a person walking in front of them, often leaving a room “unoccupied “ even though we were in it. I replaced batteries and did the other tricks online, but nothing helped. I was often having to adjust temperatures to compensate for their inability to recognize people. The new ones are perfect! I don’t even touch the temperature anymore since it knows where people are and adjusts automatically, like it’s supposed to do.
While I was quite hopeful these little smart sensors would be a good fit for use as a type of motion detector, for intrusion detection, I think they are better off for what they seem to be originally geared towards which is as an accessory for the ecobee Smart Thermostat; when time isn't of the essence. After quite some time playing around with them, I find that the detection on this is very intermittent and inconsistent. I'm used to working with devices that would alert you to an intruder as many times as you cross their path. These devices do not do that.In this case, it seems that it only activates or "wakes up" every so often and this is likely due to the need to conserve power. I'm used to working with devices that would alert you to an intruder as many times as you cross their path. These devices do not do that.In this case, it seems that it only activates or "wakes up" every so often and this is likely due to the need to conserve power. The battery is rated to last for multiple years and since it is nothing more than a coin cell battery, it could not constantly be on and detecting movements and still last for this period of time. Thus why the detection of someone is intermittent. As for consistency, I've set it off sometimes, and sometimes not. My large (85lb) dog sets it off sometimes and not others. My 15lb dog sometimes has not set it off so far. I realize an intruder might be 85lbs, so it is necessary to go off for that, but it doesn't always happen this way. What does this mean for you? If an intruder happens to come into your home by breaking a window for example, you would have to hope that it was at the time the detector would notice and generate an alert. The environmental features of this sensor are only available if paired to the ecobee smart thermostat, so they cannot be used for temperature monitoring or temperature alerts if you don't have the ecobee thermostat.I would not recommend this for the purpose it is being marketed for, because if you count on this as an intruder detection device, it could be some time before it notices someone rummaging through your things, if it notices at all (such as if you left the area it is placed within).
These little devices take the ecobee thermostate from good to great! We put one in every major room and that allows us to select what rooms we want the thermostat to consider the temperature when making decisions about running equipment.Did I mention that each comfort setting can select which sensors to use? This means you can have "night time" only consider bedrooms, daytime the main areas of the house (or home office), etc.Every house I've lived (for many years) has been made more comfortable with these devices coupled with an ecobee thermostat.Note that there is no replacement available for the stands/wall mounts from ecobee.Sadly the biggest downside is the battery. These Smart sensors are definitely needed, but are pricey for the price (~$50 each) and can pair up to 32 sensors to one thermostat. They allow the Ecobee thermostat to monitor each rooms occupancy and temperature. Right now I have 2 sensors ok opposite sides of the house on the 2nd floor and one additional sensor in the family room. Depending on the comfort settings, the thermostat can be configured to take into account occupancy and temperature to reach a desired average temperature. Each sensor comes with a small magnetic stand or a wall mount with adhesive or small screw. They're small enough to not be obtrusive, but definitely still noticeable in certain backgrounds. Not sure how long the coin battery will last in each sensor before needing replacement.
Well made, good looking, and easy to use, the ecobee smart sensors are a set it up and forget about it device that does exactly what you would expect, monitor motion in a room and if you have an ecobee thermostat, monitor temperature.I’ve been using these two sensors in conjunction with my ecobee smart camera and the ecobee haven service for about a week now and haven’t had any problems with the sensors, but haven’t been blown away either.Setup is fairly simple. You pull a tab on the device, scan a QR code on the back of the device and the ecobee app will set the device up automatically to your ecobee thermostat or ecobee smart camera.Installing the sensor in a room is as simple as it gets, either use the metal base that just pops on via magnets or use the ... MoreWell made, good looking, and easy to use, the ecobee smart sensors are a set it up and forget about it device that does exactly what you would expect, monitor motion in a room and if you have an ecobee thermostat, monitor temperature.I’ve been using these two sensors in conjunction with my ecobee smart camera and the ecobee haven service for about a week now and haven’t had any problems with the sensors, but haven’t been blown away either.Setup is fairly simple. You pull a tab on the device, scan a QR code on the back of the device and the ecobee app will set the device up automatically to your ecobee thermostat or ecobee smart camera.Installing the sensor in a room is as simple as it gets, either use the metal base that just pops on via magnets or use the wall mount with accompanying screw. I chose the metal base and liked the way it fit on the shelf, definitely a design that blends in easy.I connected my sensors to the ecobee smart camera to work as motion detects for the security system and they did what they say they do. It picked up motion in the room when the system was armed and did a good job ignoring my two large dogs roaming the house. If you’re ok with paying for the ecobee Haven service ($5 a month) and have the ecobee camera, these sensors are good for monitoring motion in your home.I do have a few complaints about these sensors. The first being lack of use within the app. I expected to be able to view temperature or humidity readings on the sensors in the rooms via the ecobee app, but as far as I can tell that isn’t possible with my setup.Next is the lack of compatibility. Unless you have an ecobee thermostat or ecobee camera, don’t expect to get any use out of these. There is no compatibility with other systems like SmartThings or HomeKit.My third complaint was the functionality without the Haven service. Unless you are will to pay the $5 a month there is no way to get even push notifications when motion is detected. Which leads to my next problem with this device, the quality of notifications. In my opinions push notifications should be immediately useful. That is not the case with Haven intrusion notifications. Rather that the notifications telling you exactly where the motion was detected, the notification just tells you to open the app to see what exactly happened. In my opinion this isn’t a great setup.Overall, if you already have the ecobee smart camera or thermostat and are just looking for the easiest solution to build out your security system or thermostat, you’ll want to go with these. If you are a DYIer, you’re better off looking elsewhere.
