Encyclopaedia of Mythology by Arthur Cotterell

Arthur Cotterell’s Encyclopedia of Mythology is a richly illustrated and comprehensive reference work that explores the mythological traditions of ancient civilizations across the globe. With over 500 images and detailed entries, the book brings to life the gods, heroes, rituals, and legends that shaped the spiritual and cultural landscapes of societies from Greece and Rome to the Norse, Celtic, and Eastern worlds. Cotterell’s approach is both scholarly and accessible, making it a valuable resource for readers interested in the symbolic and narrative foundations of myth. The encyclopedia is organized thematically and geographically, allowing readers to trace the evolution of mythological motifs and archetypes across different cultures. Cotterell delves into the origins and meanings of creation myths, the roles of deities in human affairs, and the moral lessons embedded in heroic tales. His writing balances academic rigor with engaging storytelling, offering insights into how myths reflect the values, fears, and aspirations of the people who told them. What distinguishes this work is its visual richness and clarity. The illustrations—ranging from classical artworks to archaeological artifacts—complement the text and deepen the reader’s understanding of each mythological tradition. Cotterell’s encyclopedia is not just a catalog of ancient beliefs; it’s a journey through the imagination of humanity, revealing how myth continues to shape literature, art, and identity in the modern world.

An Excellent Book if you're interested in mythology. It gives summarised accounts of the Beings in mythological lore which makes this a great Starter Book for taking the first steps in studying Greek, Celtic or Scandinavian Mythology. I would definitely recommend buying this book before venturing to buy other books of a similar subject as it's a great Reference aid. It is also excellent value for money.

This books is a mine of information. Bought it for my daughter who is looking into Norse Mythology for inspiration towards her final year dissertation project. She is designing & making an animated 3D character as her final piece of work at University where she is doing a degree in Animation. It gives a good overview & great illustrations throughout, but not loads of info. However, it met our needs & its excellent value for money! Would recommend.

An excellent reference for mythology. It lists a lot of different mythological characters and gives substantial info on them. It helped to build my knowledge base and gave me great starting points to further it. A great book for those looking to do the same.
