I'm 62 and have been playing guitar since Led Zeppelin III came out. I've been in countless bands and spent some time doing studio work. I've got a pretty good collection of guitars all of which I have been utterly incapable of leaving alone in pristine state.-I'm a Modder. I'd much rather buy a mid level guitar and take a chance at modding it to greatness than shell out over $2,000 to have a guaranteed great guitar. I just love the chase for tone. I've recently been obsessed with the Gibson stable of beginner guitars. I've added a Epi Les Paul Studio, a Precision Guitar Les Paul DC (guitar kit) to my collection. But this little guy is my absolute favorite! First off, straight out of the box it was a blast to play! The bones of the guitar were surprisingly good. Good straight and stable neck and at $, great overall quality. The only feature of this guitar that is actually pretty poor is the tuners. They do have some slippage, but they do keep tune. The pickups sound pretty good, the electronics are cheesy (as expected) but do the job. Finish is really good but probably a bit brittle. I've read a lot about this guitar being unplayable out of the box. Mine did not fit that bill. The guitar I recieved from Sweetwater was a pretty good beginner guitar. And to cap it off, this is the lightest guitar by far than any I have ever owned! This little guy was LOADED with potential!! Oddly enough, the bridge was actually in the proper intonated adjustment. I was able To bring the action down to universal playability without any buzz. The frets were VERY good, in direct contradiction to quite a few reviews I had read. I thought I was going to have to dress the frets but they were fine as were the ends. The fret ends were better than some Fender Player guitars! So what were the mods? I had a fender custom Strat pickup at 5.69K that I installed in the bridge. A Lollar Tweed Neck pickup in the neck (this pickup is my go-to neck because they consistently have the Hendrix sound DOWN!!) That pickup is @ 4.75K. 500k CTS pots and switchcraft Jack and a Stewmac three way toggle. I bit the bullet and put an Emerson !.5k Cap. Don't know if its much better than orange drops. Kluson Deluxe keystone tuners. I thought I would use a Music City stoptail bridge but the factory bridge sounded great so I didn't use it. With the exception of the toggle switch and the jack, adjustments needed to be made to fit all the additions. Result? Wow!!! This is one of my favorite guitars! The strat bridge pickup in this application is incredibly robust. You have to bring the tone knob down to @5 to get a killer bridge sound. As in all stoptail bridge guitars, notes are very immediate and pronounced. It takes about an hour to adjust to the immediacy. There's just a great affect that the lightness of this guitar has on the live playability. I don't think its just because I'm 62 and grateful for the reduction of the weight. It prods me into a welcome abandon that makes me a better player (at 62!!!). I would use this guitar in a studio situation. A $ guitar!!! Concerns? The neck seems very stable but time will tell. Frets are well seated and crowned but don't know about how time will affect. Will they wear down quickly? Don't know how the finish will hold up (which is the lowest concern). To sum-HOW WILL IT HOLD UP OIVER TIME??? Message? if you're a Modder like me? go for it. it hsa been the most reqwarding mod in my life. I LOVE this guitar and am blown away that the cheapest guitar I have ever owned is one of my favorites. ****, I LOVE that!

I bought this as a a backup for my Gibson Les Paul. I was looking for a cheap and comparatively lighter guitar with a similar feel to my Gibson. I got both of those with this Epiphone. As an added plus, the guitar sounds great. The single coils obviously sound different, but I actually like it. It's very clean and responsive. For reference, I play exclusively clean (through a DV Mark Jazz 12 with a few pedals) and play mostly Les Paul (the man) and Chet Atkins style stuff.

I know it's a cheap guitar, and I expect cheap electronics, tuners, frets, but the neck is the most important part of the guitar and I feel it's not of any type of decent quality seeing its condition. My only other cheapest Epiphone I bought was the Special 1 P-90. The finish and quality surpasses this guitar for not much more. I would gladly pay that price for that type of quality if this guitar was made that way. I will recommend this guitar, because it sounds good, but just expect something wrong with it when it arrives. All in all, you can practice your luthier skills.

I've been dabbling with learning how to play the guitar for several years, I've even took a guitar class at the local community college but have gotten frustrated easily to where I quit. I'll say that I have had a "on again, off again" relationship with guitars for the last 15 years.I am not an expert in guitars and am steadily learning the process - how they are built, the electronic parts, etc. I decided to give it a go again with this inexpensive guitar that is a great little learning tool for the novice player like myself. One thing I did do when I got this is change the strings. I watched several review videos on this model and one the the first things people recommended was to change the strings. So I bought a box of Ernie Ball Regular Slinky's (10-46) and re-strung the guitar immediately after I got it out of the box.I am pleased with my progress so far. Could be the fact that I found a great website that gives excellent beginner lessons and helps me to understand the fundamentals of guitar playing. Things that the college instructor didn't teach very well. Of course, it helps that I can play the videos over and over! I'm upgrading to a Fender Mustang LT 25 amp, which will give me a huge range of different tones that I can get out of this guitar. As my skills develop and I get better (hopefully), I will look at upgrading to a higher price point guitar. I would love to get an SG!If you are looking to get started in the guitar community, I would recommend this model to get started. I've watched many videos of experienced guitar players jam some pretty cool riff's with this thing!
I give this guitar 5 stars, because for the price you won't find a better quality. I've heard critics talk about the inferior strings and such. You will never get high quality strings on an instrument that doesn't rake in huge profits. Strings can be changed. This guitar renders no complaints from me. Makes an excellent gift for a beginner. It's not bad looking either. Again, I am totally impressed for the cost. It sounds great!
I bought this guitar a while back as a project guitar/backup for my '65 Epiphone Olympic special. I've always loved that single coil Melody Maker style guitar, and while this is not exactly the same, I love the feel and tone I get out of it. It's extremely lightweight and comfortable to sit with, and I got lucky that it came out of the box set up fairly well (I know for budget guitars it's rare that's the case). The pickups are good for the price point, but I do have plans to upgrade them (already bought some Seymour Duncans, just haven't had time to make the switch out). If you like the sound or style of the Melody Maker (which sadly Gibson is no longer making), this is a solid alternative IMHO. Definitely recommend trying one out!
This is an incredible guitar for the money. Only thing that needed serious help was the action at the nut. Using the stock nut and a set of nut files, I set it up to my preferred specs of 1/64th of an inch a two the first fret. This ensured comfortable playing as well as tuning stability. After cutting the nut slots to the right height, looks like the file made sure the strings wouldn't catch and now the guitar stays in tune much much better.I would replace the pickups with p90s if I could. Some modification to the pickguard might make this a possibility.Sometimes, I forget I'm playing an Epiphone. With the nut corrected it really is possible to get it feeling pretty good. Here are my personal specs:.005" neck relief measured at the 8th fret.1/64ths action ... It's capable of all the same specs after adjusting the nut, making for a very playable guitar. I also don't believe the tuning issues are due to the economy tuners since after I adjusted the nut the guitar stays in tune much better.I bought a replacement black tusq nut but have not installed it. I wonder if there's even really a need to do so.This action at the nut is very low but the guitar pulls it off very well. I'm sure that with better pots (remember this is an economy guitar) and
I really want to like this guitar. I like the yellow gloss finish, it's lightweight and I wanted a Les Paul style with single coil pickups. There wasn't any fret sprout and the frets needed polishing and the fret board needed to be oiled. The finish is great with no dings. But it has some problems.I realize this is the least expensive Epiphone, however the tuners are really bad,it won't stay in tune for more than a few minutes of playing, the bridge pickup is incredibly weak sounding,it's really tough to intonate and there's some neck issues. I've adjusted the truss rod but it's really not playable on the frets nearest the neck pickup as the G,B,and E strings are right on the frets. I replaced the tuners and that helps somewhat with tuning, and put in new Wilkinson pickups but the bridge still only plays at about half volume compared to the neck pickup. I've adjusted the bridge to point were it's at least playable but the action is still too high for my taste. Part of the problem is even with the pickups raised all the way up they are still too far below the strings maybe that's part of the sound problem. I bought this guitar mainly because I like how it looks but I don't plan on spending anymore on it.
I've been playing guitar for 24 years. Since I was 6. My first was a Martin half size acoustic classical. Here is the thing. The seller has underpriced this guitar by a good 400 pounds. Even then it'd be good value for good money. Epiphone are closing down. Perhaps that is why the price is so low. This IS a Les Paul model. It sounds gorgeous. It plays better than, or as well as a Gretsch Cherry Red Hollowbodied Electric I played at a mates house years ago which cost him thousands. With my experience with and knowledge of guitars. I'd say if you're really not sure. Want a very beautiful electric guitar, terms if it's tone, build, quality and style. Buy one of these. Yes, the price is very low, it is still brand new. Yes, the price is very low, it is still brand new. Though it is not a G. Les Paul. It's an Epiphone Les Paul. May I remind the musos that Lennon used an Epiphone (Casino)... Clapton would use this guitar. It's probably not heavy enough with regard to its weight to imagine Neil Young playing one. But what a find! ...I recommend 10-46 Regular Light Gauge XL Pro Steel Strings or Bullet .10 Guage strings for this. Although the tone switch can alter either to sound as the other in many ways. Just to the professionals having one set or the other is very important. To me. I go by Keith Richards adage, that any guitar can be made to sound the same. Don't be put off by that. It's not a beginners guitar and if you begin with one of these. Not only are you very lucky to have one of 5 for this price... but one of what I hear are the last Epiphone Model Guitars ever going to be built... ...Beginning very well so to speak. Learn it's subtle high end nuances. Cheap and trashy guitars were made to sound as such and be used so nobody know the difference between them and the awful music they ocassionally listen to and base their prowess around... ...this is something Les Paul would have made into a holyish grail for guitarists. Let me say this... ...It isn't like a Strat. Nor any other. Which means for it's sound and tone... ...It's in the same league as the best. It IS a Les Paul model. But you're still swayed by it's cost... ...Not many low price guitars have wooden bodies that are durable AND light. Not many have harnessed the power of being able to use two built in tone modifiers and no bigsby/tremolo arm and still gain a sweet, luscious tone... believe me. In that vain. Between this guitar and a brand new cheap branded tele model style piece of rubbish. There is no comparison. I think... here... 6 lucky musicians with little money are being done a big favour... I will never lose or stop using it. I've beenplaying a strat for 8 years and a Baby-Mosrite before that. This has had me developing my playing, again, even after 24 years of playing, from my Childs Classical Martin acoustic through SGs, Mozzies and Strats and Hohner and Martin full size acoustics... playing the best Gretsch's and even playing cheap guitars... ...that weren't or aren't mine. Had offers from N.Y. and Macca to play with both live and in session/creative work. Now ask yourself. Why would I... be trying to hawk guitars for who or whom isn't or aren't me, and why this guitar or it's other coloured variations... ...because I'm low on Cash and I want a Worn Sunburst OR Turquoise version to keep pressing the importance of this model to other guitarists if someone feels like having a kind of spokesman, and, so I can always have one. Lots of responsibilities. You never know. One day, when I am playing rhythm or lead or a range of other instruments for Macca or Mr. Grunge... ...They may recieve something for it. Like a demo. Life is unsure. Except this whole deal is really the best deal on a guitar that you're going to get for a long... long time. I kid you not... Buy it a.s.a.p or miss out! If you're selling same model in other colours, feel free to use this for this guitar in other colours. (Pictured is my studio, where this has become a vital component) It can with the right effect unit, like a Boss Micro BR, produce any sound you've heard of the past 71 years of music. I say 71 due to JL Hookers original recording of Boogie Chillun')
I really love tis guitar. Despite the low price I think it is a brilliant design. Simple and all the controls are right where I like them particularly the three way switch which, unlike on other guitars where it's placed at the top, is at the bottom to the back of the pickguard where you can't accidentally switch it to another setting. The finish on the bridge hardware is a little on the soft side. I don't know what alloy it is but I don't think it would do any harm to toughen the bridge up a bit. To me it sounds great through both solid state Orange Crush Pro 60 and my Marshall 2x12, 50 watt combi. The body adds resonance to the sound and I like the result. It's not too heavy either. The neck is comfortable and slim enough to curl my thumb round over the bass E string without too much fuss. Tuners work just fine.My one gripe was the neck joint. It could have been a far better fit. I actually put plastic shims in the gaps which has helped with sustain and I think improved the sound. I'm not convinced that even on a cheap guitar you can't get better tolerances than on this guitar. Perhaps it's a one off and most are ok I don't know. It could be that, given the price. It doesn't matter though; I fixed it and it plays really well. The neck is slightly more flexible than on other guitars, but again, it's not terminal and I have never found a guitar that you can't get some whammy bar effect on by 'leaning' on the neck a little bit. (Not too much obviously!)I think this design is so good that a slightly better quality version would just be a reall winner for Epiphone because as I said this a brilliant design. It looks fantastic and sounds great too! Simple is good.
