Remember how I said it prints great photos...Pity about the software that comes with it though. I like to bulk buy my photographic paper in A4 size (hey, if you've bought a photo printer you're probably going to print quite a few) and print the photos in the middle of the sheet of paper. This allows me to print 4*6 or 5*7 or 8*10 photos on the same size paper and trim as required. There doesn't appear to be any option to select "Print my photo in the middle of the paper", all photos seem to print right at the edge, and to add insult to injury, the software doesn't seem to give you an option as to what size you'd like the photo printed at. I should be able to grab any file from my computer and ask the software to print it in my desired physical size (and crop as necessary) anywhere on the paper, aligned top, bottom, middle, wherever I want. In short, great print quality but let down by build quality and poor software.

I emptied 6 different colored inks (65ml each) into the printer and downloaded the Epson SmartPanel app to my iPhone (11). Within 15 minutes I was able to print from my MacMini desktop computer (Mac OS11.4) via my home WiFi. No problem there. Getting the Printer to scan and send the data to my desktop, also worked so long as I used the screen on the printer. Trying to use the Epson Scan 2 software, already on my computer and working fine with my old XP-830, was a struggle. Eventually I managed to get the scan 2 software to recognize that the ET-8500 was out there and connected to my WiFi, even though I could print from the desktop to the new printer trouble free! How I achieved success, I can't tell you (I wish I could) I just kept trying everything I could think of. I felt sure that if I could have got the Epson Connect Printer Software to run, then perhaps this would have been easier. However, even when I had the printing worked out (easy) and the scanner functioning (4 hours of difficult work), the Epson Connect app only ever reported there were no Epson printers to be found -- there were two (XP-830 and ET-8500). The other software hassle I had was to use the Epson Connect Service. This gives the printer its own email address so you can send it data as if it were email. To sign up for this (free) Epson service you need to enter the printer's IP address into the search bar at the top of the Safari screen. (Get the IP address from the printer's screen (SettingsNetwork Settings WiFi setupWiFi (top icon) scroll down to find IP address.) This takes you to many pages of useful stuff, including signing up for the Connect Service, but you need to know the Administrator's password. I had never set one and there was no way to re-set a password. The default Administrator password for Epson used to be access, but not his time. Eventually I found a password that worked was the serial number of my new ET-8500 printer. (Lift the lid of the printer and you will find the serial number on a label slightly left of center). Once the serial number was entered in as the Administrators password all the grayed out options lit up and I was able to use all the options. So how was the printing now that I had fought the software and won? Excellent. Somewhat better than the results on glossy paper compared to the old (expensive-to-run) XP-830, but you might not be able to tell unless you compared the old and new results side by side. I am expecting B&W to be better on the ET-8500 because of the gray ink, but I have not tried it yet. Am I glad I bought the ET-8500? Yes, but mainly because it is infinitely cheaper to run, even though I have clearly paid some of these savings up-front for a twice-the-price-printer.

Excellent quality prints
23 February 2023

The box was heavier than I expected. I’ve read reviews about flimsy paper trays, flimsy other things. I wouldn’t say that setup was a snap, but any extra time spent is so worth it for the quality it produces - setup is only one time. It came packaged very well. Lot’s of blue tape holding stuff together to remove, but each piece of tape had a handle, so it was easy. It took a few minutes to load the ink, but that’s the beauty of this machine - no expensive cartridges that seem to dry out too fast, not produce many prints, and end up in landfill. Filling was easy, fun to hear the ink glug glug into the tanks. The touchscreen was great, leading you through the whole setup. Filling was easy, fun to hear the ink glug glug into the tanks. The touchscreen was great, leading you through the whole setup. I didn’t use the App because our internet was down today - but unlike other computer products, it was easy to set up manually because of the touchscreen. I decided to do print alignment, easy to follow, though it took a while - and so worth it for the end result. The MacOS software behaved well. I wouldn’t call the paper trays flimsy. They don’t have the heft of my old laser printer trays, but materials science has come a long ways over the years. It did take a few tries to understand where tray #1 gets inserted though. But once I got it, it was easy. It took a while to find where to select tray #1 in the print menu, just a first time issue. But it would be better if selecting the tray was at the top menu instead of down two levels. There was no paper in tray #2, and paper in tray #1. It should have selected automatically. I finally let go of my expensive in its day Epson R2400, that produced amazing quality prints using nine ink cartridges and supported 13x19 inch paper. Amazingly the printer driver on my new MacBook Air M2 still worked. But the machine indicated yellow was empty, and after inserting a new cartridge, it still wouldn’t work. The software indicated all inks were empty. It was time to move on. My first few prints on the 8500 were surprisingly good. I wish I could print side-by-side comparisons to the old printer. With the Eco-Tank, printing on demand was suddenly less expensive than online services, especially when you include shipping and handling costs. I’m fine paying more for a printer up front - I disliked the ongoing cost of those cartridges. When I use quality paper on this machine, I get professional results.

Great Features, A couple of minor annoyances
12 January 2023

I purchased this as an upgrade from my 3750 for 2 main reasons: The screen is larger and I wanted the rear feed and rear slot option. (The rear feed will feed paper from a pop-up area located at back of machine. The rear SLOT will feed paper straight through from back to front (after removing a piece and making an adjustment). The rear slot will print on media up to 1.3mm thick. Anyway - after setting up the printer, I was anxious to experiment with these features (mostly the rear slot, as I wanted to create my own decorative card stock for use with die cutter). I could only find ONE sentence in the entire user manual that addressed selecting the rear slot, and it was a NOTE: It said to select the rear slot, choose the option with the appropriate paper size. I could only find ONE sentence in the entire user manual that addressed selecting the rear slot, and it was a NOTE: It said to select the rear slot, choose the option with the appropriate paper size. I kept choosing 8.5 x 11, but did not realize there were further options. (See first photo). However, to choose rear feed, you go into different settings, first choosing layout, then printer settings, then paper source. See 2nd photo. I think these 2 options should be located in the same place. (I use MacBook with Monterey). I also found one other limitation working from the printer console. There is a nice feature to print decorative card stock or lined paper. If you choose lined paper, you are offered the rear slot as an optional paper source; if you choose decorative card stock, you are not! I believe the rear feeder (which loads and prints without curving the paper around the way the main feeder does) will meet most of my card stock printing needs. After much research, this feeder can handle card stock of 100 pounds (or more).

Great Printer for the Hobbyist Photographer
27 December 2022

I purchased the larger version of this printer ( ET-8550) when it was first introduced in the Summer of 2021. I was searching for a photo-quality printer that used large cost-effective ink tanks. I liked the Canon Megatank printers, but they did not make a competitively-priced printer with 6-colors. After 18 months of use, this printer has been excellent. Only needed to clean the heads once or twice. It has been left unused for a month and still works when needed. Picture quality is very close to printers with 8-12 colors. The ink is reasonably priced and available in most office supply stores. The print speed is pretty good on standard print mode but slows on high-quality mode. Very little visual difference on small prints of 5" x 7" or less. The software is not bad once you get used to the options. Cellphone printing and controls are excellent. Setup using a cellphone is very intuitive. Not sure why some report difficulties with software or cellphone setup. Paper handling is good, but not perfect. The tray for (#2) is a little flimsy and can be inserted too far into the printer by accident (easily realigned). The printer is limited to pre-cut paper only. Roll paper stock is not supported. The unit has easy service to refill ink and replace the maintenance box. The footprint is compact for the size of the printer. It is quiet, with the usual inkjet printer pump and click sounds. If stored for a long period of time between prints, requires a longer head-cleaning process. The time for cleaning is reasonable. The printer is capable of printing on plain paper for business use as well as high-quality photo paper. The scanner works well but is one sheet at a time. The control display is the size of a standard cellphone and can be flipped up for easy viewing. default paper size and quality can be saved in the settings. The printing software has several options for layouts and a preview picture selection grid that has variable sizing of the individual images and of the picture grid up to the full size of your computer. This makes a large batch printing job simple and easily managed. The software can print from NEF RAW files. I am not sure if this is because I have NEF Codec loaded on my computer, even if so, the software can print from NEF using the Codec. My overall review of this printer is that it is an excellent printer for photo hobbyists. If I am selling prints, I would probably suggest a professional-level printer with archival inks or pigment inks.

Great Printer so far!
29 April 2022

My Epson ET-8500 was delivered last week and I finally got around to installing it two days ago. First off, READ THE DIRECTIONS, there is a ton of blue packing tape all over this machine in lots of places you won't think to look. You need to find them all. Set up took a bit of time but it's needed to calibrate the machine correctly. My printer is also hard wired into my computer via USB cable, the same one I used for my Canon printer. Some people have complained about the slow speed, I'm confused. This is far and away the fastest inkjet printer I have ever seen. Some of the test pages used to calibrate took a while to print but once that was all done it spit out an entire page of colored text in less than 5 seconds. I just did a 5x5 inch picture of my wife (full color) in the same amount of time (on plain paper though). It printed so fast it didn't seem like the print head had enough time to go back and forth umpteen times to get the picture on to the paper. Is the picture perfect, no, it was after all done on plain paper, but the colors are very good and not a single smear. So far I'm very impressed with how this printer works.

THE BEST EVER!
26 April 2022

It was a big decision to purchase this printer at over $600. I never paid that for a printer in my life! My wife and I like to print images of us and our kids, quality is #1. We have purchased multiple printers over the last 10 years....HP, Canon, and other Epson models. Printing has always been good, not great. My wife and I were on a mission to purchase the Epson ET8500, the only problem was that no one had it in stock. From Best Buy to Amazon to Epson, no one had this printer. Shipping dates were 2-3 months out....to get a printer!! I got on B&H's website, they too were out of stock, I decided to give them my information so they can alert me when the 8500 was back in stock, I didn't expect a correspondence for several months but gave it a shot. A week later they had it! I was contacted by email and now own the 8500. We have been printing photos for two weeks now, 5x7,4x6 and 8.5x11, all I have to say is HOLY COW! The quality is off the charts, never did we experienced the quality in a printer like this in our lives, pure perfection. What's really funny is that I'm not even printing on Epson photo paper, trying to go through the HP stock we still had. I read a few bad reviews regarding set up, but this was a breeze coming from someone who is not all that techy. I highly recommend this printer for all your home office needs as well as the ability to print the most magnificent high quality images with zero imperfections.

The Answer to High Ink Costs
19 March 2022

If you're like me and have always been disgusted with the cost of printer ink and how quickly the cartridges run out, this is the printer for you. First of all the photo print quality is outstanding. I have never seen better from a home inkjet printer. Best of all though is the cost of the ink. With the supertank system, you pay just a little more for a bottle of ink than you would with a cartridge but I would guess that you get at least 25 times more ink. The tanks are easy to fill with no mess and it's easy to monitor the level not only from the print screen but also visually on the printer. One thing I will say that I have gathered from reading forums and reviews is that this printer and probably a lot of others will give you an error code and require factory service when the ink overflow pads get saturated. You can clean these yourself if you are handy and watch the available online videos. I also found out that the best way to avoid this is to configure your photo prints with borders and not borderless. That minimizes the overflow of ink when printing. I wanted an ET-8550 but due to supply chain issues I understand they will not be available for months and really I don't print larger than 8x10 that often anyway. I would definitely recommend this printer.

This is an amazing printer
20 July 2022

My first impression upon opening the box was VERY positive: the printer was obviously packaged with great care. Next impressions after taking the printer out were equally positive - the build quality is excellent and the features clearly user-friendly. Ink tank filling is super-easy. And all six inks were provided, despite the Staples website indicating that grey, yellow and black weren't included. (Rather annoying, since I therefore ordered them separately: black and grey from Staples, yellow from Epson as Staples didn't stock it.) Wireless setup was a breeze. (Good instructions and no connectivity issues.) The first thing I printed was a simple black & white document which tuned out very well. (Good instructions and no connectivity issues.) The first thing I printed was a simple black & white document which tuned out very well. BUT where I ran into problems was navigating the myriad of settings to print a scanned full-color image of my book cover. It took three runs to get the settings right. But the end-product was really impressive in clarity and color accuracy. Bottom line: Though the cost for this printer was "a bit" rattling, as of now I think it was a very good decision to replace my Canon PIXMA. The difference in product quality, instructions, and user-friendliness can't be over-stated.
