Went to check after a few and a good half dozen of the 8x10s were mangled/bent in half because of the output tray I had to make smaller to keep the smaller pics from flying all over the floor. Yeah, I should have thought better. More YEAH tho - they should have a design that can handle scanning various sizes in one batch - which as mentioned - they advertise! Or don't advertise and advise against it. Anyway of course, would have kept it even only having decent resolution, but back it goes for this idiocy. 6 irreplaceable photos for $500 pile of plastic - nah.

I have seen a lot of reviews that have enthusiastically recommended this scanner. I would too, though I have also seen a lot of reviews pointing out scratch lines that happen down the center of an image while the image is scanned. Glossy photos are the worst as any aberration that comes in contact with the shiny surface leaves either fingerprints or scratches. I started scanning and I noticed a couple of faint scratch lines on every image I scanned. If these were negatives, I would have stopped scanning right away, but the prints I was scanning were simply to use as references so I wasn't as concerned. However, I hunted inside the scanner to find the problem. I've cleaned it constantly and nothing has helped. The same scratches have persisted. The plastic sheet provided for special projects has been used several times and there are two distinct scratch lines embedded in the surface. I included an image of the page. When I have looked for a solution, there are several people who have experienced the same thing. Epson's response is usually a reference to a video about how to clean the scanner. A super-basic, non-troubleshooting video. Sometimes there is also a pdf user manual provided. Really? There are enough people out there who have experienced the same problem and Epson's response has always been that it is our fault by indicating we need to clean our scanner better. I'm sure Epson knows how to fix this. That would help. I have done a lot of hunting for a reason photos were being scratched. It looks like the grey guide between the rollers that are exposed when photos are scanned could be the source of the scratches. It is about the same width. The guide I'm referring to is at the point of the pen I'm using to point to it. I have felt for an edge on it and I cannot find a reason that guide would scratch photos, but it's the only thing in the scanner that matches the location and width of the scratches of everything that enters the scanner. If I could figure out how to keep scratch lines from appearing in my scanned images, the scanner is a true winner. It's a great idea and could be a great scanner. I know there are people who have gotten scanners that don't scratch images from the happy reviews posted here, on Amazon, and wherever. This review is not happy. I'm looking for a solution.

I've had it for a day but I love this scanner already. Having a lifetime of photos to scan, I was looking for a photo scanner with a document feeder. At the intermediate setting, the file size is about 4Mb, and takes about 3 seconds per photo, and this afternoon I did about 100 photos in less than 10 minutes. The Setup allows you to generate an exact copy of the original and/or an enhanced copy. I started with both but eventually changed the setting to automatically accept the enhancements as the images are much sharper and brighter than the original photo. The image generated does not need cropping or editing, and the clarity is amazing. With a bundle of photos in the feeder, it jammed a few times but this was because of turned edges on the photos or uneven ... MoreI've had it for a day but I love this scanner already. Feeding them one at a time resolves this, but even in this mode, having to click 'continue' for each photo is still way faster than using a flatbed. I've used the Epson GT1500 document scanner (at about $500) for years and it was time to replace it but for an extra $200, this one does everything the GT1500 does so the photo scanning is almost a bonus. All the reviews I read were correct and I can't recommend this machine highly enough.

Fantastic Scanner. Fast and clever.
22 July 2022

Bought this as a gift for my wife. Had a couple of minor issues installing the software but it all worked in the end. FastFoto software is really easy to use for scanning photos. On the coarsest setting (300dpi) each photo scans in under a second. 300dpi is very good, but 600 and 1200dpi is also available, but the scans take a few seconds longer. FastFoto automatically cleans up old photos, even thos really old, yellowed ones. Not perfect but it does a good job of bringing out colours. It also improves contrast and brightness and removes redeye. And you have the choice of making the schanges to the original, or to a copy, soo you have both. It even scans the back of photos, so if there are any notes on the back, they are captured for posterity. What a great feature. ... MoreBought this as a gift for my wife. For documents you need to use ScanSmart, which is also blazingly fast and does double sided scans in a single pass. It also discards any blank pages automatically. I scanned a 10 page document in just a few seconds, and the quality was great. I would recommend this scanner to anyonne who has a lot of photos or documents they want to scan. A bit pricey, but well worth it if you have the need.

Fast and Reliable

I purchased this scanner to finally digitize my big boxes of old photo prints. I have digitized about 50 rolls so far without issue. The scanner works quickly - I haven't timed it but it seems to be 1-2 minutes per roll depending on the number of pictures. I haven't had any misfeeds. The only issue has been a couple of Polaroids - it's balky about feeding those. The software works well and allows you to specify directories for a scan using year, month (or season) and free text. The scanned results look good - the software gives you the choice of scanning as-is or automatically applying corrections (sort of like the auto smart fix in Photshop). I'm scanning old 4x6 snapsohots- I can't comment on how it would work on something like high quality art prints. I have also successfully scanned a couple of documents both using Epson's software and directly from Acrobat. When I'm done with my photo scanning (which will be a while - these first 50 rolls have barely made a dent in my backlog) I'll have to decided whether to sell this unit and go back to my old flatbed (higher resolution, but slow warmup and slow scanning), or keep this one with the advantages of speed and the sheet feeder. Based on my experience so far I would definitely recommend this scanner.

Great scanner for digitizing family photo archives
25 September 2022

After some research, I purchased this scanner to tackle a large project to digitize several generations of family photos. In a matter of a few days I've scanned the first 3000, and am very pleased with the scanner's performance. After pulling photos out of old albums I can scan stacks of up to about 50 photos at a time in a wide variety of sizes, both color and black and white. I am using the option to automatically color correct photos, and it is working great even on old, yellowed, and faded color photos. Many of the resulting scans in both color and B&W look much better than the originals I was scanning. When there are notes written on the backs of photos, the option to scan the backs also is working well, though I've had to set it down to the most sensitive ... MoreAfter some research, I purchased this scanner to tackle a large project to digitize several generations of family photos. It's been able to take most photo papers and even old newspaper clippings without jamming or issues, and the only things that have been challenging have been some thicker photo postcards which are very stiff. I will need to use a flat scanner for some of the old large format prints and a separate slide scanner for slides, but this machine is doing the heavy lifting on the printed photos. Overall I'm very pleased with this purchase.

Great quality scans and fast processing! Digitizing family photos can be a daunting task and this scanner makes the process so much easier than scanning one photo at a time on a flatbed scanner. My wife and I scanned an entire photo album yesterday and it only took about a half hour to scan over 200 images. Most of the effort is spent removing the photos from the album and re-inserting them afterwards. Scanning is the easy and fun part of the process. The really fun part is seeing your small photos come to life on a big PC monitor screen. It would be a simple step to later organize photos into slide shows if so desired for a simple presentation. We scanned at 1200 dpi with auto-correct turned on. The software offers the ability to scan and keep the original photo, ... MoreGreat quality scans and fast processing! The really fun part is seeing your small photos come to life on a big PC monitor screen. It would be a simple step to later organize photos into slide shows if so desired for a simple presentation. We scanned at 1200 dpi with auto-correct turned on. The software offers the ability to scan and keep the original photo, then generate a separate photo with the auto-correct applied. However, in almost every case we preferred the corrected version and turned that feature off. Another great feature is the scanner's ability to scan the back of the photo whenever writing appears. This speeds up filing the scanned photos if you are organizing later by date. Once the photos are organized, you can then just delete the backside image unless of course the handwriting is sentimental, and you want to save that as a photo memory as well. The scanner does not remove dust specks or scratches which would be nice feature to have, but the quality of the scans is good enough that in most cases further editing is unnecessary. Another great feature is the wireless connectivity, so you can place the scanner on a large table or work area and have access to the scanner as part of your "assembly line" workflow. Lastly, this can be used as a document scanner with some additional software from Epson. That's probably something we will check into after all of our boxes and albums are scanned.

Major Downgrade from FF-640
9 March 2023

I was forced to "upgrade" from my FF-640 when scan lines became a consistent problem regardless of how much cleaning I did. I was weary to buy the FF-680 based on some early reviews of scan quality issues on this machine. I'm posting this review to confirm that indeed, the FF-680 is a flawed piece of equipment if the image quality of your scans is of importance. Specifically, the color and tonality of many scans from my FF-680 are off - the brights are too bright, the darks too dark, and it is seemingly impossible to reduce the contrast using the meager software provided by Epson (I use what they refer to as the "document" image processor, only because the "photo" image processor doesn't allow for border margins). This is especially true for black and white photos. ... MoreI was forced to "upgrade" from my FF-640 when scan lines became a consistent problem regardless of how much cleaning I did. The machine is flawed, the software is weak. Of course, it works well if you're not particular about your image quality - scans quickly and easily, images are decent. Beware if you are at all particular about image quality - steer clear.

Needlessly complicated network setup that relies on WPS.
29 December 2022

I have only scanned a few photos. I watched all the same reviews you probably did and image quality is excellent. However like many others, connecting this scanner to your existing wireless network is needlessly complicated. WPS was never a great implementation for many and many routers no longer even support. We have Unifi system which does not. I wanted a WiFi connection as tethering with USB cable (USB 2... really?) was not practical due to space issues. So I went through the Epson instructions for network connection, many, many times. I used the network scanning application, pushed WiFi buttons... and the scanner just never appeared in ANY list on my iMac. So frustrating. Save yourself some time and just use your phone to setup. 1. get the phone app. I used Epson FastFoto for iPhone. I assume Android will be same. 2. Take a picture of the label on the back of the scanner so that you can have the password for the 'SSID-Direct' network 3. Follow the instructions on the app. You will need to go to your phone network settings and you will see the network being broadcast by the scanner. Enter your password. 4. Once you have connected to your scanner's broadcast SSID network, you will then see your home network. App will ask you to enter the password for your home network. 5. Once you enter that, your scanner will then connect to your home network. 6. Go to your iMac or PC and run setup again. Now you will see your scanner listed and just click on it. Follow the instructions. You are all set. I would change to 5 star once Epson addresses the network connection and eliminates WPS as a method.

Worthwhile investment - gets the job done.
20 April 2022

I've been using this photo scanner for the last couple of months and it has performed exactly as advertised. I've scanned approximately 6,500 family photos from over the last 100+ years along with a large quantity of letters written and sent home by family during WWII. Nothing has been damaged, although I did use the "carrier sheet" to protect some of them; better safe than sorry. It scans large quantities of photos quickly and the quality of the scans is impressive. I've found the 'auto color adjustment' feature to be a benefit. The FastFoto software applies automatic sequential numbering of the photos using whatever file name you supply, which has been great. The FastFoto software applies automatic sequential numbering of the photos using whatever file name you supply, which has been great. There is a reminder that pops up after every so many scans that reminds you to clean the scanner - that entails nothing more than 20 seconds of using the supplied cloth to wipe down the two components that actually do the scanning; any residue or dust will show up in the scans. Ultimately, I was a little unsure if this device was worth the price. I've found that it is well worth it. I am using a MacBook and have hooked the scanner up via USB. It has wireless capability, but I've found the wired approach to be very reliable and faster. Overall - I am really pleased with this scanner.
