All rounder product

After careful investigation of a couple of ink based printers, I came across the ET-8550 which had quite a lot of benefits for my use, namely, A3 printer in a compact size, huge savings on ink and full photo based printer which would be beneficial in creating my own albums and personalized birthday and gift cards for our friends. Initially I was thinking that the price is quite high when compared to other ink based printers however the extra features that are mentioned above do compensate for its value plus you get free a 3 year warranty on top. The printer is quite easy to set up and use so no issues there as well. Love the product and will recommend it to my friends.

An amazing printer, but be ready to put the work

This is an amazing printer! I would highly recommend it, just be ready to put in some work to get the most out of it. The reason it does such an amazing job is that it is so customisable. It is really crucial to understand how to use it well: what paper to use, with which settings etc because every one of those factors will affect the output. Don’t assume it is a bad printer if the output isn’t quite what you want. Try different papers on different settings. It has done beautiful fine art prints for me, beautiful photos and cards, but only when I test and try to get the best fit for each image and paper. I would highly recommend this printer!!

The setup process was reasonably easy although there are a few inconsistencies between documentation and software automated processes. Registering the product was very difficult. Resetting a password does not work at all. I had to create a new email address to register this new product. Print quality is exceptional and I am very happy with results even on cheap plain paper. This product prints better image quality than the expensive commercial photo proofing printer we have been using.

Great Photos, Economical Ink
31 October 2021

This review is primarily for enthusiast and professional photographers. I purchased the ET-8550 from HN Palmerston North in October 2021. I had originally been considering the P906 or a Canon Pro model. The main draw of this printer was the EcoTank setup and the ink savings. The 8500 and 8550 are the only EcoTank model suitable for decent photo prints. The 6 inks include 2 blacks and a grey, with one of the blacks being used primarily for text. The colour inks are dye based Claria premium inks which Epson claims will last 200 years in an album or 98 years on display. The colour inks are dye based Claria premium inks which Epson claims will last 200 years in an album or 98 years on display. While I would have preferred the 10-12 ink systems utilising pigment inks, I decided to take a risk with this printer. I primarily shoot black and white and have been disappointed with kiosk prints that produce colour casts and poor print qualities. I was uncertain whether the 2 blacks and one grey would be sufficient in printing high quality black and white images and I have been pleasantly surprised. The print quality is fantastic. While not quite the level of a pro photo printer, the differences will be imperceptible to most, and my prints have been admired by enthusiasts and pros alike. The quality of the print will naturally depend on the quality of the photo. For best results, it is important to use the right papers. By default, the Epson papers should be used, but the Canon Glossy II paper also produces fine results. Canon matte photo paper is acceptable but not great. The main disappointment for me at the moment is the lack of default ICC profiles. Many paper manufacturers such as Ilford do not yet have ICC profiles on their sites but I see Red River does (although it is more difficult to get in NZ). I would be fine with selling prints from the ET-8550 and believe most customers would appreciate them. Prints are clear and vibrant, dynamic range and shadow detail are decent, with colours that are very close to my calibrated monitor. Black and white images are crystal clear without colour cast. The ability to press a button on the printer and change from neutral to cool to warm is a nice touch. The Advanced Black and White profile is excellent and reduces the need for individual ICC profiles. Final calibrations have taken me a few days on the printer and I am now happy with the results. Pixel peeping with cameras and printers has gotten out of control. While some will appreciate the pixels, composition, lighting etc are far more appreciated. However, for fine art prints, a 10-12 pigment ink system with the right paper may be preferred, for archival quality if nothing else.

NIce Printer/Scanner
13 October 2021

I bought this from HN in September 2021, so far so good!. Once setup and ink is filled, which is quite easy and no mess there was a little left over in each bottle, pretty much to the bottom of the label on the bottle was left, the printer goes through about 14 pages (forget the number) of various setup routines. It used a reasonable amount of ink in its initial prime and test pages, so much so I could use the remainder of the ink in the bottles to top it up. There is still a little ink in the bottles. With the setup of the Wi-Fi connection, I have a dual band setup and the modem/router places into a 'Smart' connection so there is only one visible connection, some devices that are 2.4ghz are clever enough to see through that and connect, but not this printer, I had ... MoreI bought this from HN in September 2021, so far so good!. I have been able to print from my laptop, my phone and also from my work supplied laptop. The printer also wakes from sleep mode without having to do anything and the paper tray self ejects to catch your prints, but you do have to press the touch screen button to close it. The CD/DVD tray is apparently stored under the printer, I havent looked as yet. Plus they say to store it there when not in use. The first photo print we did came out nice, however dimmer than the picture, so some pre-processing to enhance the picture might be needed. Perhaps this is due to mu phone screen showing brighter colours than what was actually there on the day. Text printing is clear, but will depend on the quality of the text you are printing. Sometimes it prints quite quick and other times it sits there waiting for the info to be sent, so I think connection speed is important. I have also used the auto double sided print function and that worked quite well. We have used the scanner twice so far to, 1 to create a PDF and 2nd to create a copy of a page and it worked very well. We are extremely happy with the ET-8550 so far!

No more ink cartridges and A3 printing
16 May 2022

I was after a printer that provided economic photo printing up to A3 that used ink tanks instead of ink cartridges. If I want full professional prints I use a phot lab for my printing. The quality I get from this printer is fine for my everyday photographs and really keeps printing costs down. Unpacking and setting up was easy but simple things like using the button on the touch screen to electronically put away the output tray should be stated clearly in the initial setting up instructions. The setup was straight forward but allow yourself 2 hours, don't rush, and make sure you do the print head alignment. For photo printing on papers other than Epson, ensure you use the 'profile' for the paper.

Printer came faulty out of the box
21 May 2022

Was impressed by Epson ET-8500 features and reviews and because of that decided to purchase it despite on high price. The setup was very easy but when I started to print 5'x7' borderless photos I was disappointed straight away. First, printer jams Epson Premium Glossy photopaper when it is loaded in Tray 1 - I spoiled about twenty sheets, actually was not able to print any single photo when the photopaper was loaded in Tray 1. After that I tried it in rear tray - it worked, the quality of photoprints is very good, but on the edges of the prints black marks are printed randomly like the printing head is leaking. Did all recommended diagnostics, but it didn't help. With plain A4 paper printer works OK. Also overall build quality is very flimsy and I think the printer ... MoreWas impressed by Epson ET-8500 features and reviews and because of that decided to purchase it despite on high price. Quality Photos, Economic Ink Costs
25 October 2021

I bought the ET-8550 almost solely for printing photos for myself and for those that occasionally ask to buy prints. I was initially looking at the P900/P906 but decided to try the ET-8550 after watching Keith Cooper's informative review and other ET-8550 videos on YouTube. If you are sitting on the fence, check them out. I have printed twenty 4x6"; eight A4; and three A3+ test photos in colour and black and white experimenting with papers and settings. I am very happy with the output of the ET-8550 to the point where my reservations around whether the print quality would meet my standards for print sales have disappeared. 99% of people who want to buy a print will be happy with the output of this printer. 1% of fine art customers would demand and be able to see the ... MoreI bought the ET-8550 almost solely for printing photos for myself and for those that occasionally ask to buy prints. I would still like a P906 for those less frequent occasions, but we need to be realistic. Other than cost being a factor, too much emphasis is placed on pixel peeping with cameras and printers and far more focus needs to be based on factors such as composition, lighting, interesting subject matter etc. Unless you have discerning fine art clients that insist on images that most won't appreciate, and the longer lasting archival qualities, this is the way to go. I wasn't entirely convinced the ET-8550 was the right printer as I was buying it but my concerns have disappeared after seeing what it is capable of. I can wholeheartedly recommend the ET-8550 as a photo printer for almost all occasions.

The best Ecotank printer for photos
12 November 2021

I've now had the Epson Ecotank Photo et-8550 6 colour multifunction printer for a little over a week and I am delighted with it. My only complaint is that Epson didn't introduce it earlier. Setting up was a breeze with the downloadable Epson Smart Panel app available for iOS and Android. I even managed to connect the printer to my home wifi network which is aa first for me. The photo print quality is outstanding with the additional Pigment Black and Grey inks over the normal CMYK. They are Claria inks so they will not be as resistant to fading in sunlight as true pigment inks, but the ability to recharge inks from a bottle rather than expensive cartridges overcomes that small limitation for me. They are Claria inks so they will not be as resistant to fading in sunlight as true pigment inks, but the ability to recharge inks from a bottle rather than expensive cartridges overcomes that small limitation for me. A complete set of six ink bottles will cost around the one hundred and eighty dollar mark every two years or so with a maintenance cartridge at about thirty five. The printer also performs double sided printing automatically on command, so you can print your own books at home if you wish. The printer will print on paper up to A3+ size but the changes needed to do this are rather fiddly. For any size larger than A4 media you have to rotate the printer to gain access to the back. You then have to remove a paper feed cartridge and take off a guide mechanism that you reattach to the rear of the printer. The larger size paper is then feed in a flat configuration through the rear of the printer. The advantage of this arrangement is that the printer will print on quite heavy weight paper in this mode - up to 300gsm. When A3 and A3+ printing is complete, the paper guide needs to be removed and reattached to the paper feed mechanism which is then reinserted into the back of the printer for A4 and smaller (A6) printing. Fiddly but OK. There is also a second 'normal' A3+ feed slot on top of the printer but I have not yet found out how to make the printer feed from that position. The on-line manual is not clear on that point alas.

A3 print failing - using 90gsm Envirocare through rear feeder - unable to print. Manuals and info poor and insufficient information. Online manual poorly designed and limited detail. Unit has cheap feel - disappointing quality. Large format stock feed awkward - not working. Smart features - lots of potential... Print quality at Best is not a match for old WF 7520 on Best... Technical support evasive and unhelpful in determining initial purchase. Suspect WorkforceProET-16600 better solution - but tech support directed to 8550...
