One of the distinctive features of the Saturn 1B is the set of cylindrical tanks that forms the rocket’s first stage. Resembling a cluster of smaller rockets, the tanks are sometimes misidentified as re-purposed Redstone missile stages. In fact, these 70-inch diameter tanks were created using the same forms that produced the Redstone rockets. So, while they share a common lineage, they were not surplus rockets themselves. The tanks fueled eight H-1 engines, four of which could gimbal to steer the rocket while under power. Eight low profile fins ringed the base of the rocket for guidance during atmospheric flight.

Bought a second one of these to paint as Apollo 7 which had alternating black and white fuel tanks. The kit comes with decals that designate it as Skylab 2 which had all white fuel tanks. This kit is made of high quality parts. The instructions are kind of vague so check with the Rocketry Forum to search for build tips. Interested in the Estes Saturn 1B kit? For $74.99 before tax and free shipping Sunward has the best deal in Canada.

I’m delighted that Estes brought back the 1/100 scale Saturn 1B. Building it was a fun experience but expect a few difficult steps during assembly. This isn’t a kit for beginners. I recommended painting the lower tube and fins first before gluing together. This will be a fun rocket to fly! Thank you for the fast and free shipping Sunward! Please continue to sell great Estes products!

Excellent reproduction of the original Saturn 1B, not overly difficult to build, and flies well with a D12-3 motor. Only weakness is that fins tend to break off upon landing, but can be glued back on.
Reissued classic rocket kit. Not the easiest to build but no problem if you are experienced.
Like all Estes rockets its really great. I have all the Estes real space line. Hope they bring back the Gemini-Titan to complete the collection.
What a great rocket kit from Estes. It is scaled 1/100 like its big brother the Saturn V. Will look great both displayed and flying. Glad these rocket kits are around now because 30 years ago this would have been just a dream to obtain as a kid
Great model. Very detailed. Sturdy.
