Who would think a coated 14mil head would be a good reso? These were designed as batters, and they're great for sound and durability, but the thickness also allows them to resonate longer. The coating tames the tone a bit, so it's a mellow resonance, not boingy. I'm using a clear EC2 as the batter on a thinnish shell (maple/cherry Neusonic) and the combination of those 'heavy' heads is just right!

I was initially attracted to the G14 coated heads. I have a G14 coated head on an OCP maple/ash 5.5x14 snare and get a great sound. Evans advertises the G14 as a single ply head with double ply durability. I hit fairly hard and have always loved the sound and feel of single ply heads on a snare, but being single ply, the heads never lasted that long. With the G14, I was able to get a head that gave a response and feel of a single ply with the durability I needed from a double ply. That being said, I was curious to try the clear G14's on my toms. For a few months now, I have been using Evans Onyx heads on my toms. While I enjoyed the attack the Onyx, I started missing the sustain I was accustomed to with say, the G2's. The heads were easy to tune and I found that the sustain was very present as you would expect from heads of this thickness. I tend to tune the batter side a little tighter than the resonant side, but found myself tuning the G14's down a bit to reduce the amount of higher end overtones I was hearing and to get the batter and resonant head closer together in pitch. My larger toms had a quick attack followed by the sustain. The smaller toms had all the attack I wanted but also exhibited a "throatiness" that gave them more presence. I would highly recommend G14's to someone looking perhaps for a bit more of a lively response out of their drums but still want the durability of a double ply drum head.

I have one particular snare that this head just seems to need - it's a little more open and live. Great head though. I combine this with a 300 series bottom head and it's great.

I wanted a fuller, rich, natural sound after using Pinstripes for decades, and just love these G14's. Nicely resonant, but not over the top. Soft feel, so you have to work a little harder for your double sticking, but well worth it !!
You get maximum volume, punch, overtones, etc. I have changed all batter heads to the UV1. I love it for the versatility, You have several easy things you can do for overtones and all other adjectives. You have a variety of things you can quickly do to alter for the room, mood your in. With a pillow, moon gel, wash cloth...you name it. If you like the booming Bonham sound, heavy muffling is not what you want. If you like the Bonham sound, use muffling sparingly. And if you use it, make sure it is easily changed or removed. We make alot about adjusting to the room and environment but the reality is your mood is probably the biggest variable. Give your self room to adjust. The UV1 gives you the best versatility using all of the tools in your tool box.
These heads aren't for me. I'm switching from Remo Pinstripes and for once I was really happy with those. They worn down and I wanted to try something new. The G14 are loud, and that's fine, but without any rings, layers, thinker film, the heads ring too much. I just can't seem to tune them the way I want to. I bought Pinstripes a day later because I miss the sound of my drums already. Maybe I need more time with the G14's but for now they aren't for me. If you want some loud heads, these are it. I heard a few previews on some youtube sites ( Evan's dont have samples of these for some strange reason ) and thought this is what I wanted. I might be keeping with Remo for awhile.
Ive been running clear G2s for about 4 years. They always sound good to me but I wanted to give these new G14s a try. I tend to like the ringy, hollow tone especially on smaller toms like 8s and 10s. When I put the G14s on they sounded good but a bit more muffled. Almost like Remo Pinstripes. More suitable to the studio than live performances, IMO. I will be switching back to the G2s. I would say these are great heads for someone...just not the best for me.
I purchased these for 12" and 13" mounted toms and a 16" floor tom as resonant heads and used the Evans Hydraulics as batter, looking for a dark, metal-ish tone. It made me happy enough, but I wasn't amazed. I just recently bought a new drum kit, and bought a whole new set of heads. Still using the Hydraulics, but this time as the resonant and the G14s as batter. After maybe an hour of tuning the entire kit, I was amazed with the sound I got. So, as a metal drummer, I really suggest these heads.
Typically I am a 2-ply head guy, as 1 ply always felt like I was going to break through it. But in the never ending quest for 'tone', I wanted a head that had a little more sustain and less overtones (all kinds of theoretical reasons why). Anyway - the 14 mil head is fantastic. Feels good when you hit it, less overtones than 2-ply (Evans G2 and G2 SST), and the sound seems more 'pure'. Both my 13" and 18" I tried sounded better than the SSTs I had on them. Pretty remarkable.
I love my martini kit but the bass batter head has been a problem since no company makes a purpose built 14" bass batter head. I have tried several this one fit the bill the best paired with a Evans calftone 56. Required the least muting and is capable of both low and high tuning which is important as I am a full time gigging drummer and this is one of my main kits now.
