EVH 5150III 50s 6L6 Head Black

With its smaller size and portability, the all-new EVH 5150III 50S 6L6 Head is the perfect amp for players who want Ed Van Halen’s touring tone, arena volume and performance in a compact package. Three channels of road-tested sound work for any playing style—crisp cleans, chunky overdrive, tight distortion and searing leads, while newly added independent dual-concentric controls allow for gain and volume level matching. Tweaked to meet Eddie’s touring requirements, this 50-watt head delivers a full-spectrum of tone. Channel one powers crystal-clear clean tone; channel two features increased gain for greater sustain and is re-voiced for improved low-mid frequency definition; channel three also has improved range for the “low” control and oozes with increased liquid gain. Channels one and two each have dual concentric gain/volume controls, with shared EQ (low, mid, high). Channel three has its own gain, volume and EQ (low, mid, high) controls. All three channels also have global presence and global resonance controls. The amp is also loaded with seven JJ ECC83 preamp tubes, a pair of Shuguang 6L6 power tubes, switchable output impedance (4, 8 and 16 ohms) and an adjustable bias control. Seductively dark in black textured vinyl with a dual black EVH striped steel grille front panel, our 50-watt stealth head also comes with vintage-style “chicken head” black control knobs, red lamp jewel, dual speaker output jacks, four-button footswitch, effects loop, direct out and moulded plastic handle. Overall:In my first review I stated that I liked the amp I just hated the cheap knobs, yeah...I just hate the whole amp in general. I had confidence in ordering this particular product because everyone on the internet and their mom seem to love this head, especially the metal guys, which I am. But I have to say I just was not impressed. I was expecting to be blown away with how great this amp is but I just wasn't. Yes, it has great high gain but honestly it didn't sound that much better than my Metal Muff distortion pedal plugged into my $300 Bugera head. Instead of being exciting about it I felt totally disappointed and regretful for making this purchase so I'm returning. Also, 50 watts is just too much power and volume for me, I'll be sticking with 20 watt amp heads, they're plenty loud, I know that now. But add in 50 watts with cheap knobs, it makes for a scary situation. And this in no way is reflected on zZounds. This is all on EVH/ Fender for making a cheap quality product. Seriously, the volume knob on the first channel is so cheap and flimsy it feels like a Lego, I dont how it made it past production. Wait! I do know! EVH makes their products in Mexico. I already knew this but thought I'd take a shot anyway, should have listened to my instincts. Thank you zZounds, for understanding and letting me return this product for a full refund. For now Im just going to hold off on getting a new amp, my 20 watt Bugera with a Metal Muff in the FX Loop is working perfectly fine for now. Its astounding to me that a budget brand like Bugera makes better quality built products than EVH.

Brutal Sound, But Why The Knobs Gotta Be So Cheap??

Overall:First off let me say that zZounds is amazing and they always deliver super fast. Im just lucky and I live in the neighboring state where their warehouse is located. Anyhow, this head is heavy, wasn't expecting it to be that heavy, which I guess is a good thing, heavy usually means quality. Sounds great. This is my first high gain/ higher wattage amp. I knew 50 watts was going to be louder than my 20 watt Bugera but I wasn't expecting it to be THIS much louder, WOW.I have to be super cautious when turning up the volume because the knobs are vey delicate and flimsy, thats my only issue with this product. For $1,000 EVH could have used better quality knobs, seriously, my $300 Bugera head has WAY better knobs. I almost wanted to return this product because of that. 50 watts + cheap/ delicate knobs is not good. Upon further messing around I did notice that the volume knob on the red channel is a little better than the one on the first channel which works out for me since I bought this amp for the high gain and will be using the red channel mostly. This amp sounds amazing so I cant stay mad at it. I even compared my Metal Muff distortion pedal with the red channel and the red channel has so much more gain, which impressed me a lot. So to bottom line, sounds great, high gain, lots of power, but the control knobs are just so cheap.

Amp that has all what musician needs, except maybe a reverb for "vintage style guys". Three channels, first fenderish clean, second that goes from crunch to heavy rhytm distortion, and third with gain for export, hardly gain knob after 12 o'clock ever need to be turned. What is exceptional with this amp is harmonic content that springs from every note played. Chords due to these higher harmonics simply make you play more and more... Pretty organic sound, but pretty tight at the same time.... pure bliss. At the back of amp there is a resonance knob that gives hard "thump" to your sound, this is super penetrating and makes amp really big. So far i have no regrets, i purchased due to recomendation on forums, youtube, and various comments, something i never do. Exellent quality and sound. Original deficits fixed!
25 September 2018

Build quality excellent. I woulds compare this to Soldano SLO build quality. Had the "2 channel" version, sounded great but couldn't hang with the volume thing between 1&2 so live functionality was diminished and you had to do MIDI fixes. Didn't play well with single coils either for me. Got a EL34 version liked the DC pots but disliked the 2nd channel, too loose and vintagy and I have plenty of amps that do that sound now. Enter the new 6L6 with DC pots and killer 2nd channel. I recall my first one having a TON of gain in the 2nd channel,so much that I had it on 10:00 and searing (kinda like Ch.3) but this new one has a more gradual gain increase across the knob. With gain cranked, does not seem to have as much gain overall as the first one,but I never have the need ... MoreBuild quality excellent. I woulds compare this to Soldano SLO build quality. With gain cranked, does not seem to have as much gain overall as the first one,but I never have the need to go past 3:00. At 1:00 VH1 is RIGHT THERE!! Records easily. Using a Lynchback. Awesome and ferocious sound. Happily, the whole amp plays well with single coils now. Before it would get too pushed and scrunchy sounding but I'm wondering if they did something to V2 because the amp stays pretty quiet and sounds great with single coils even on CH3 with the gain up a bit. IMO the clean channel is too clean now.I would like just a smidge more gain available in that channel similar the level of Ch2 at the lowest level as there isn't a good overlap of gain there. The clean is really clean though and records well also. Great clarity. The pros way exceed the cons of this head as I said it is dynamic and ferocious as it gets. If EVH copied the ENGL 656 clean channell the head would be worth twice as much!

Great value

I have been looking for something like this for years. Excellent clean, excellent crunch, and excellent drive in one amp. I tried 3 channel amps before, but one channel was always lacking. This delivers. I have a few boutique amps that are great in their own way, but all are 2 channel amps, and to get an over the top drive channel always required a front end boost. There's no need on this. I doubt I'll ever run the gain in any channel over 11 o'clock. When I first plugged it in, I thought it sounded good, but maybe a tad thin through my 112, but then I adjusted the resonance knob on the back, and it came alive. The EQ options on the amp are very flexible, and everything sounds articulate, and tight, with the resonance adding just the right amount of bottom end. The EQ options on the amp are very flexible, and everything sounds articulate, and tight, with the resonance adding just the right amount of bottom end. The effects loop is footswitchable, and it's transparent. The amp came with a 4 button switch, power cord, a long 1/4" speaker cable to connect the footswitch, and also a speaker cable. I can get great sounds at any volume, so it'll work in a mic'ed cabinet situation, but with enough under the hood to stand on its own. I paid a few hundred dollars under retail for this, because it was listed as used, but I can't find any signs it was used before. All in all, this is the amp I've been looking for my entire life. Any sound from Fenderish clean to Marshall crunch to fire breathing drive sounds, and anywhere in between, at any volume. Thanks EVH, you made an amp for one of the greats, that's great for anyone!

Had to replace the preamp tubes after 20 minutes of play at my own expense.
17 January 2022

Great amp, but it arrived with very generic preamp tubes. Two of the preamp tubes failed within the first 20 minutes of play. Once I got this into the amp tech and paid almost $100 for the preamp tubes to be replaced out of pocket it sounded great. Nervous about the future reliability of this amp knowing that the preamp tubes failed so quickly. If you are an amp tweaker, this is prob a great amp for you, but if you are spending nearly $1,500 and expect a quality product out of the box this is NOT the amp for you. Now that the tubes have been replaced it is awesome. However, I should not have had to pay for new tubes for an amp that was only played for 20 minutes.

This head has by far became my favorite piece of equipment. If you're looking for a head that can truly do it all at a price point that's unheard of for new equipment, this is it. I was between the 5150 iii 50w (both 6L6 and EL34), and 120w 6505+. Ultimately I landed on the 50w 6L6, and I have not been able to stop playing it for weeks. The EL34 version is a tad crisper on the high end, but can get tinny fast. The 6L6 doesn't have as much high end standalone, but will give you that fat, thick sound on everything from a clean to full-blast red channel chug. The 6505 is always a great pick, but that thing really only goes either sparkly clean or full on metal with little in between. Overall, to compare, this is a bit warmer and darker than the 6505 across the board. ... MoreThis head has by far became my favorite piece of equipment. The 6505 will give you crisper and clearer high-gain leads though, vs what you can get from the plain red or blue channel. As gain goes up, things tend to get a little muddy in comparison. A boost pedal is an easy remedy for that though, and get you closer to the 6505 sound. I've had really good results with a Fortin 33. That and a noise gate is a must have to get the most out of this amp, IMO.I run it through a 1960AV cab, and primarily play a Mexi-Strat with a Dave Murray setup. Volume is NO ISSUE at any point playing with an incredibly loud full band. Most of the time at 4-5 is more than enough. With the right cab, this head will work at just about any venue. Then again, at 1, even through my 4x12, it's goes quiet enough to practice at night and not be heard through the house.Only downsides would be the lack of a few knobs. The green/blue share an EQ, resonance and presence is shared across everything, and resonance is in the back. It'd be nice to have totally separate controls for all 3 channels, like the 100w version...but I understand space is limited. Thankfully EVH added separate gain and volume for green/blue though.Overall, EVH/Fender really struck an excellent balance. Buy it!

Overall:I blew up my peavey because I'm an idiot. So my wife graciously allowed me to purchase this amp. I have played through all of the standard high gain amps as well as the botique ones, but this thing puts em all to shame for the money! I play a lot of styles of music. Bluesy stuff, some shredding, funky cleans, rock, metal, ect. This amp can do it all. There is no limit on my creative capacity with this thing. The clean channel is what I feel like a fender amp should be (take it with a grain of salt, i have never played through a fender tube amp), channel 2 is great for all varieties of distortion and can get into metal territory, channel 3 has your blistering leads and crushing tones all packed in tight. This is three amps in one with no compromises. Do ... MoreOverall:I blew up my peavey because I'm an idiot. So my wife graciously allowed me to purchase this amp. Overall:Sooooooooo cool! The brief review is this; if you are looking for getting close to the sound on Metallica's record ...And Justice for All, then this should deliver for you. If you are too young to know what I'm talking about, then the low end sounds like a heavy weight punch in the gut and the rest is like Avenged Sevenfold.• The clean channel has a punch that reacts to your attack but still has very Strat like chime.• The blue (crunch) channel shares the EQ with the clean channel, but it is remarkable how I was able to voice the two with distinction and balance.° The red (lead?) channel is absolutely brilliant! It's perfect for dialing in the EQ to cut through the mix live. The added benefit of the separate EQ, gain and volume for this stage of the ... MoreOverall:Sooooooooo cool! The added benefit of the separate EQ, gain and volume for this stage of the signal is invaluable to my overall tone. There are some things that I personally didn't dig on. I want to emphasize that these are just my opinions.• The design for the separate volume and gain controls for ch 1 & 2 being on the same spot makes it very difficult to adjust one without accidentally moving the other. The little black ring is hard to reach with my fingers and live, this is frustrating. BUT I would take the addition of the separate gain and volume control over ch 1 & 2 ANY day over the previous version.• The final negative opinion is that the mids seem scooped regardless of adding more mid-range to it. The way I have compensated for this is by using my OCD overdrive pedal while on the clean ch.

THE metal amp

Words cannot describe the feeling of getting this and cranking it up. Aesthetically, it's basically the most BA amp you've seen with amazing build quality. The blue channel is now redone and AMAZING for those hardcore kids and pop punkers alike. The clean channel takes pedals amazingly. I love love love this. Who needs 120 watts? In this day and age, every venue mikes the cab anyway. Bless yourself. Buy it if they restock. THANKS JOE PERRONE
