Faber-Castel colored pencilsLike many artists I tried many different mediums. The variety of mediums I have worked with is endless; including clay, stain glass, watercolors, acrylics the list goes on and on.Somehow I always went back to graphite pencils and ink. These two mediums gave me the abilities to get in there and do details, I had a professor tell me I would paint a door knob even before I painted the door! Yup, he was right! Now my problem was, what if I wanted color? Straight out of luck! I went to Dick Blick website and discovered Faber-Castel colored pencils! Don't be cheap, get the largest combination of colors you can afford, believe me you will love the range of colors. Wow, amazing! I can get in there and detail as much as possible. You should know that these pencils can make your art a masterpiece every shade and size they come in is amazing. I really love using the better pencils shade 8B for my sketching. These pencils have made me into a better artist and will always continue to use them. I love that you can buy one pencil or even a variety pack that can last forever. I would highly recommend this brand to anymore. Especially the grip that the pencils come with I love everything that it comes with.

I purchased the Faber Castell 9000 in two variants. First was the 2H. I find this to be a great starter for rough sketching designs. The lead is still surprisingly soft and does not scratch the paper like most other brands.Second was a 4H pencil. This is also a great tool for sketching out ideas. And just like the 2H, the lead provides a pleasant drawing experience.I have used Faber Castell 2H and 4H pencils for over 30 years and I have never been disappointed.

These pencils are soft and velvet like, I can sketch a layout for a watercolor and not cut or indent the paper, so if I have to arrange components or switch perspective for a more effective presentation there is no strange effects when the wet pigment hits the paper. That is why I like these, I draw things I am not always familiar with or that I necessarily know how to draw, so I have to look for a line to keep, and what to change, and what just doesn’t work. That is why I like these, I draw things I am not always familiar with or that I necessarily know how to draw, so I have to look for a line to keep, and what to change, and what just doesn’t work. The soft graphite is good for transfers, also, which is fine as long as you drew the picture you are copying. I have a drafting background, and in drafting you punish the vellum with hard pencils, cutting tracks pushing hard for definition with a sharp point, with these 4b pencils I tickle a picture out of the paper with the side of the pencil with almost no pressure, and I use a kneaded rubber eraser to remove what doesn’t enhance or help my picture. I draw a lot of things just because I will look at something and ask myself how do you draw that? How do you contrast the lights and darks, edit the value map for a more gripping presentation. But that’s how I learned to draw, by drawing. And when you first start, you get a lot of ghost images of things you’ve changed and it can effect the results of your work, and these are the things that make it very hard to market work in the beginning. But in the meantime, draw everything. If you can’t think of anything to draw, draw your left hand if you are right handed. This is a learned skill, for me, some people are born with more talent than I will ever have but people look at my artwork and they know what I was portraying. You compare your drawing to what you are drawing, for instance, the fishing boats I draw look like real fishing boats because I draw real fishing boats, I used to discard a lot of drawings that didn’t work. Now I design better, and I can mess up a picture and still use the paper because of the soft graphite in these pencils. Brands matter, the price of art supplies is frequently related to their quality, and Faber Castell is an old friends name. I have used their pencils since I was a child, they work.
I've used Faber and Castell's products for years now, and no matter what I've used of their products I've always gotten excellent results and excellent quality. These pencils are some of my favorite pencils to use and I got through them like crazy. The writing is always smooth and glides perfectly on the page. It feels like I'm writing with butter rather than a pencil. The lines are wonderfully dark and excellent for getting that extra value that you don't see in other products. All in all I'm a big fan of Faber and Castell's products.
I just might use these instead of Derwent. Have had problems with grit in the Derwents recently that I never had before. These are a bit darker, but a lot smoother, no grit so far. They are about a half of number off from what I am used to, but so far the gradation from one to the next is better and more consistent than the Derwents. I also purchased the numbers not included in the kit separately and would rate them the same.
Faber-Castell pencils rank right up there in quality with the best artist pencils for your hard earned buck. I own almost every artist pencil brand that has ever been made (I'm a pencil collector and user also). I have ran tests on all pencils I own and I did not find grit or impurities in these. This anniversary box of pencils contain large graphite pencils which I love. Those woodless pencils snap into and break when dropped and they are a headache I don't need. The jumbo pencils that come with this set are flawless and are heaven in my hands.I really can't find anything negative about this beautiful box of pencils, which come with a dual sharpener and an eraser. There are great if you are on the go or at home. Very impressive. All these pencils write and shade very smoothly. And I have not had any grit that sometimes gets into other brands leads. There is a definite difference between grades as well. Many other manufacturers have little to no difference between grades and you can't tell the difference from one to the next and they make you wonder if there is any, but not these. I recommend making a tone chart for yourself because the grades of hardness are different from most brands. I was also pleasantly surprised when I discovered that their 8B was darker than some charcoal. I have tried many other brands which all seemed the same. Now, I've found my home with these pencils. I no longer have a need to try other brands.
I use this and harder leads for preliminary sketches behind watercolor paintings. It does what I need it to do. Faber-Castell is a reliable brand for all art products. I will order these again and again.
This is my first pro artist set of pencils. I LOVE THEM! I was debating between the prismacolor graphite and these Faber Castell graphite pencils. The primsa color is cheaper and people seem to like save for the fact that they break easily. Over the years, I have learned to just get the good stuff. I can personally testify that these do not break. I accidently dropped my case from hip height and not one pencil broke. I love how you can feel the difference from the H2 (hardest pencil in this set) to the velvet softness of the B8 (darkest pencil). I don't know if I will use the whole set, so, I may have been just fine with the smaller set of Faber Castell, but, I don't regret buying these. I love them!
