Then when you remove the receiver, more grounds invariably fall out of the grinder itself and get everywhere. Perhaps most frustrating, when you go to wipe everything down, the button is on the front of the device so you end up tapping it 50% of the time and yep, you guessed it, more grinds everywhere. The Fellow Ode Gen 2 is a great filter grinder. Quiet, consistent, great features like the anti static deioniser to keep the usual mess in check. I bought this because I wanted low fuss, fresh ground coffee in the morning. It sits solid on the bench in a nice matte black finish. It’s so quiet, you can’t even tell it’s running until you put the beans in. Most importantly my wife approves. Magnetic alignment of the cup is cool. The lid for the cup was noted to be a bit of a loose fit on the James Hoffman review, but I haven’t found that at all - it’s a nice fit.

I’ve been using the Fellow Ode for the past moth and have grown quite the fondness for this machine. For those with a conical grinder, you will be amazed how fast this grinds a 15g dose! Less than 5 seconds. Highly recommend a RDT spray to reduce static mess down to almost none. Bonus, if you own a Fellow Opus grinder, you can use the Opus plastic cup. It’s also magnetic and the exact same size without those internal fins. Some reviews mention frustrations with the metal version. 10/10 grinder for filter.

Fellow ODE Brew Grinder White
11 December 2023

I upgraded from a Wilfa Svart and the difference to me is huge. I’m still working out where to dial beans in for use with my Moccamaster but the grinds are really consistent and i’ve not had a bad cup even if I can tell I haven’t cracked the code yet. Filter bed is always flat and no bouldering as with the Wilfa. It looks cool, is quiet and grinds the coffee really well. There is some retention and it can be a little bit messy but i’d rather it was spilling fines and chaff easily from the machine rather than retaining it all inside. I’m really happy with this, i may upgrade the burrs eventually but out of the box the coffee tastes great. Excellent service from Coffee Hit as usual.

Unbelievably disappointing purchase from Crate & Barrel! The grinder is listed as a for sale item during Black Friday sale, and I ordered it for my husband as a Christmas gift. However, when we received it this morning, the product box is severely damaged and the bottom of the grind is also chipped. We immediately called the customer service for exchange, but shockingly, we were told no refund or excusable for final sale. This is also the last unit in the warehouse. So, Carte & Barrel listed a damaged product on the website and marked it as final sale. This is very disappointing and will never purchase any products from Crate and Barrel again! Be ware of any for sale item on Caret & Barrel, because they are damaged product to deceive customers in the holiday seasons!

Small form factor, great grind.

Picked-up the white version of the ode with the SSP burrs. As far as the quality of the grind, it's fantastic. Gives me everything I need. The stepped grinder is incredibly easy to use with enough micro-adjustments for my needs; I use Aeropress, drip coffee, and Chemex. The form factor and aesthetics are incredible. Much more compact than expected which for me was a good thing. There are a few things I've noticed that definitely aren't a deal breaker, just more of an annoyance. The static from the grounds is insane on this grinder. To counteract that I'll put a single drop of water in the beans and grind it and it eliminates the static. Downside to this is that the hopper retains a couple of beans about half the time I grind my beans so I'll physically have to push some of the beans into the chute for them to be ground. I think the little bit of water prevents the few beans from sliding into the chute. Not a big deal. Then the retention for the grounds is a lot more than expected, even when using the metal knocker on the side. Other than those small impediments to my workflow, it's an incredible grinder that I would highly recommend to anyone.

Some context, this is my second Ode. The first one died after about a year of use normal use. After quite a bit of wrangling with Fellow on chat, in frustration I called up their store in SF and worked through them (amazing). They thankfully sent out a new unit. That is indeed cool. The problem is that the unit, in general, is still not great-great. The build quality IS excellent; the fit and feel are really good. The issue is with some of the functionality. For one, the bean hopper's angle pitch is off, which creates a situation where your beans have to be manually, by hand, nudged in for grinding. The other issue is the unit - both of them - inexplicably just turn off. Its a small nuance but you want a $250 grinder to really just grind, not be persuaded to grind. Like, you want it to feel as if the machine wants to grind, like its waiting to grind in the morning. This unit continually makes excuses, not truly relishing in the joys of its single function - grinding.

My second Ode. Replaces my original KS-model that had the finger guard fall into my grounds. KS CS graciously sent me another Ode (THANKS!!!!!).I replaced the burrs with my old Gen 2 burrs. Took a bit to dial them in (about a pound) and it's going about as good as can be, although as the burrs and machine continue to break-in, there's a few refinements that always happen.New Ode still has the annoying "whirring/whistling/whining" noise that the KS model had. I tend to tune it out, but it's noticeable (although less than the KS model, but that had been running 70-80g of coffee daily, sometimes more). I'm hoping that it will break-in a bit better and go away, but not gonna hold my breath. New unit is definitely quieter than the KS model, but again, I used the heck ... MoreMy second Ode. I'm hoping that it will break-in a bit better and go away, but not gonna hold my breath. New unit is definitely quieter than the KS model, but again, I used the heck out of the KS model, so can't complain. My biggest gripe is how there's waaaaaay more grounds that collect at the chute and also spray out from between the chute and the cup lid. I do the wet-spoon-stir that's recommended in the YouTube video and now 'pop' the cup lid up so that it touches the bottom of the chute. It helps with the spray-out of grounds, but still has a bunch of grounds collecting there. Hopefully that's just the static and sharp edges of the burrs that will break-in after a ton of use (I've got about 8 pounds through the burrs and 4 through the new Ode).Overall, this is an improvement from the OG KS model and I'm still a fan of Fellow since their Duo (2014). Lol...they're gonna hate me for bringing that up.

The fellowship of the bean

The moment I pulled the grinder out of the box, I was in love. The weight, build quality, texture, color, and finish was way better than I had imagined. After going through my first bag of coffee, I could see that the grinder had a little issue with static but nothing too significant unless you’re grinding back to back, by the 4th cup you’re netting about .01+\- from the previous grind. The trick is to let it sit for a few seconds before you use the knocker and then brush everything off for good measure. The auto shut off feature is quite surprising as it shuts off almost immediately after the last bean. Not to mention how quick and quiet this grinder is. Takes about 5-7 seconds to grind through my usual 20g. The only let down is that in order to get as close as possible to a true grind, you must upgrade the burrs. Stock burrs are good but they’re limited to pour overs, French press, and cold brew. With the upgrade, and not the over the top burrs but the $80 burrs, you have a wider range of options and flavor profiles and can make a decent espresso. Overall if they included the new burrs with the grinder and bumped the price by $50 bucks for the Ode, you’d get a hell of a bargain and a five star grinder that can hold its own against the $500+ grinders. Probably one of the best purchases I’ve made all year.

They stick in the hopper, causing frequent clogs and turning the grinder into a disaster zone when trying to clear it. And if you accidentally hit the grind button while unclogging? Coffee chaos.Death Shakes: Occasionally, the grinder has a seizure, wobbling around and throwing grinds everywhere. It’s like it’s possessed. So much for the "super quiet" peaceful grinding experience I was excited for.I ignored the reviews about the mess, thinking, “How bad can it be?” Rookie mistake. After 8 months of trying to make it work, I’m reaching out to support for a refund or replacement. Don’t waste your money on this grinder. This is form without function at its finest.
