It can punch through 15 sheets of standard paper at a time with two separate size settings. If you're shopping for a binding machine that can deliver the demands of high throughput with a quality product, then the Star 150 should do the job with ease. The construction of the machine feels very solid and durable, It has a flexible punch capacity, it's safe to use, and the style and design is something that you're not going to be ashamed of leaving out for others to see. Oh, it also comes with a 2 year manufacturer guarantee! My only gripe (with myself) is that I contemplated so long to buy one ... I just wish I would have done so much sooner...I could have save so much money.

This machine was the answer to keeping everything together, neat and available for quick use. Now that some of her classmates have seen how she has arranged her materials they are asking her to bind theirs for them! This machine is a quality product, and I intend to use it in my home business to organize year end sales and purchases materials for tax time.I have found that 8-10 pages at a time punch very well, so despite the claim that it will do 12 I find that a smaller amount actually makes the work go quicker. I also wish that it could handle wire bindings as my daughters workload will be increasing soon and she will have even more diagrams and handouts to bind. The diagrams are on heavier paper and it would be nice to have them all in one place. But we will arrange them by category and it will still work well.I also have a very large collection of recipes from many places-labels, internet, newspaper clippings. I am looking forward to arranging these and binding them into my own personal cookbook. One thing I did find distracting was the lever/ handle that does get in the way of punching and then later when you bind. But that is a small irritation when you consider what a great job it does. Also keep in mind that normally, when you purchase this machine it does not come with combs, or binders. They must be purchased separately. One big plus it that the teeth are metal, not plastic and won't snap off.FYI-There is a website that carries the instruction manual and more detailed info if you need it and there are videos on YouTube that show you how to use the machine step by step. I consulted them before I started just because I learn better by watching and because I felt the manual included was a little vague on certain points such as the loading positions. All things considered, this is a great machine, perfect for a home office, a student or for homeschoolers. I highly recommend it!

I purchased this binder for my wife, who is a preschool teacher and plans to run a home day care. We immediately put it to use and I found a few idiosyncrasies that make this binder just short of perfect. First, the socket that holds the paper for the punch is very shallow, so it's hard to be sure the paper is all the way seated in the punch before pulling the lever. That's item #2 - the dual lever with crossbar was a selling point for this unit, thinking it would help with punch effort and distribution of punch force. It does, but it also makes the loading/unloading of paper into that shallow slot more difficult. In retrospect, a single L-shaped lever for the punch mechanism would be my recommendation. Opening the lever all the way makes it very difficult to load even the 20 sheets for the 0.25" comb; so practical use is to rotate the lever to the closed position as the paper is loaded into the comb. With these modifications to work practice to accommodate for the machine, it works well and quickly.

Good machine - Bad instructions

Granted, every desktop doesn't require one of these machines - your typical stapler or three-hole punch will suffice. However, there are times when you need to truck on down to the Copy Center to use something with a little more horsepower or finesse. (When you require the electric stapler, the industrial strength three-hole punch - or this little beauty.)This machine will allow you to create a custom-made handout or brochure that isn't merely stapled, or bull-clipped, or shoved into a glommy three-ring binder. (Punching, by the way, is extremely easy and produces precise, clean holes.)I've only found two "Con's" (neither has anything to do with the actual machine): the instructions, and the plastic combs. The instructions are pretty bad and really don't do justice to the machine. It's not intuitive how it operates - and the instructions don't help at all. You'll need to play with it for a while before achieving success (unless someone has demonstrated it to you in the past). The plastic combs work quite nicely - providing you stretch them out only briefly (like when you bind a document). If you stretch them out and leave them that way while you punch the paper - they tend to lose their elasticity and fail to close completely when released - allowing the pages to fall out.The bottom line...(1) You may, or may not, need this machine for your desk, office, etc. It depends on what kind of paperwork you produce.(2) You may have to play with it a bit to figure out how it works (or ask for assistance from someone who's used it before).(3) Do NOT keep the plastic combs stretched out for any length of time - they simply don't snap back into shape when you do.

Great Comb Binding Machine
10 September 2020

My original comb binder finally wore out and I upgraded to top of the line. It cost more than the original but is well worth it if you do frequent comb binding of documents you create or print from the internet. Loading the comb is very easy and once you master the insertion of pages to be added it does a magnificent job. Before you start binding it is a good idea to practice insertion of additional sheets it is a good idea to test the punching process with some scrap paper. When the punched line runs off the edge of the sheets it is a pain to have to reprint those damaged pages. I always print page numbers as it makes assembly of the document much easier especially if they get out of order. It’s hole punching was totally inadequate
9 May 2023

I liked the price & reviews seemed reasonable but my experience was that the hole puncher repeatedly was off-alignment, and clipped off EACH hole on the left edge of the sheet. I tried it with different paper with different thickness. Same result. It’s been a busy 2 weeks. But I intend to take it back, show your staff the problem and ask for a full return on my $. — I have never written a bad review for Office Depot. I like your products, prices and staff, but not this particular product.

Lightweight Easy To Use Comb Binding Machine!

The Fellowes Star+ 150 Manual Comb Binding Machine is wonderful! It’s great for personal use or a small office. Office uses include things such as sales brochures or internal manuals. Personal uses include things like school reports for your kids, recipe books, homemade photo booklets, etc. I have an old comb binding machine, made by a competitor of this manufacturer, and I much prefer this one. This machine is so lightweight that it is easy to carry with you to do your binding in the most convenient location for you. The main thing is to use it on a flat surface. The removable drawer, accessible from the right side of the base, catches the punched pieces for easy disposal. There is also another drawer in the base that can be used to hold a few the plastic combs. The plastic combs are available in several colors (e.g., red, black, white) and several sizes from 0.25” diameter (for 2-20 pages) up to 1.0625” (for 121-150 pages). The binding covers come in colors and clear plastic so you can use a color for the back of your booklet and a clear cover displaying your title page for the front cover. As a cost saver you can even use cardstock for the covers. You can punch up to 12 pages at a time and the black punch handle seems very sturdy. The unit is attractive and when the top and punch handle are in the closed position, the unit has a fairly small footprint. This is a great product and I did some price research and it’s very fairly priced for such a useful product and I highly recommend it for your comb binding needs. Note that all plastic combs and binding covers are sold separately from the actual binding machine.

Not just for the office

Out of the box, I really liked the looks of this binding machine. Low profile with nice neutral colors, smooth surfaces and curved corners prevent it from being an eyesore in the home office like some pieces of equipment. I was also impressed with the weight of it. It just feels like a quality item that will last. The cover stands up to act as a document support, but folds down when not in use. It also can be stood up on its side for storing vertically so it takes up even less room on a shelf. The machine comes with clear instructions. It also can be stood up on its side for storing vertically so it takes up even less room on a shelf. The machine comes with clear instructions. I only glanced at them since I had used a binding machine in my job previously and already had a good idea of how they work. I discovered my favorite feature right away—a little pull out tray on the right side that holds the plastic “combs” that you use to hold together your document. There’s a sizer in the tray that allows you to slide in the stack of paper you need to bind so you have an idea of which comb to use as well as a sizer for the comb so you’re sure to pick the right one. Brilliant! I don’t know if other binders have this feature, but they should! Next to it is a plastic door that you remove to empty out the tiny pieces of paper that were punched out. You can tell if the “gutter” is getting full by a convenient little window built into the machine that lets you see whether it’s full or not. I noticed the plastic door fits securely so there’s little chance of “confetti” escaping and getting everywhere. The box states the machine can punch 12 sheets of paper at a time. I was finding it a little tough to get through 12 sheets until I realized the paper I was using is 24 lb. which is around 4 lbs. heavier than regular copy paper which usually runs around 20 lb.. I pulled out a few sheets and we were back in business. Even with the full 12 sheets in there, it did punch the paper, however it was a little harder to pull the handle and the paper tended to want to shift so your holes may not line up or they could be too close to the edge. It took no time to put together a twenty-six page document. It’s nice to have the flip up support at the back that you can lean the document against so it’s not flopping over and it helps to make sure the pages are situated straight. Also there’s a dial adjustable paper guide along with an illustration of where the punches are going to be so you always know the layout. The adjustment is useful if you were adding binding covers which are a little bigger than regular paper. You insert the plastic comb behind the metal teeth and slowly draw down the small handle on the left of the machine. You’ll see the smaller teeth move to the right and capture the rings of the comb opening them up more the further you draw on the handle. You want to open them just enough so that you can feed your document pages onto the comb. I was able to load my document on the comb all at once with no hassle at all. Push the small lever away from you to close the comb, carefully remove your document and you’re done.I designed calendar pages on the computer and printed them on high gloss 10.5 mill. photo paper. I wasn’t sure how punching holes in the pages would go since they are thick and very slippery. I punched just one sheet at a time and it went through it like butter. I probably could have done more sheets at once, but since I really didn’t want to have to reprint a page and use a lot of ink, I took it slow and it did perfect. I used the 5/16” inch comb to take into consideration the thickness of the paper, the pages went on the comb in minutes and I had the calendar on my wall two minutes after that. I was very impressed with how easily and precisely it punched the photo paper especially. Im looking forward to creating other projects with it such as scrapbooks and recipe books. I believe this binding machine has lots of uses beyond just the office.

Perfect for us Lab Techs
28 April 2015

I am so excited to receive the Fellowes Star Manual Comb Binding Machine. I am a final year Medical Laboratory Technician student and I constantly have lab reports to do every week, sometimes days apart. Finally I no longer need to stand in line at the stationery store.First impressions were that it's slightly big and clunky – but no worries, I will find space for it aka bookshelf, or on top the computer desk. The instructions were pretty clear on everything, you can't put many pages in at a time to punch (I limited it to 5), but by being careful and taking my time, I was very satisfied with the outcome except how to put the combs in properly, but it was easy enough to figure out with about two minutes of trial and error.I love the fact that it's completely ... MoreI am so excited to receive the Fellowes Star Manual Comb Binding Machine. Another nice aspect is the paper guide to determine the size of comb you need for your project. One thing I would have changed is the comb tray - if you try to store anything more than a single, flat layer of combs, you risk your combs being bent as there just isn't enough room. Aside from that minor stipulation, everything else has functioned beautifully. It works well and is easy to use. Lightweight and functional. You do have to make sure the paper is pushed in deep enough to make clean cuts. I suggest practicing a few times to get the hang of it.If you're looking for mass output, spend the money on a more expensive machine. For occasional use, this will more than fulfil your needs. For home use with small or even some bigger projects, I can definitely recommend the Fellowes Star Manual Comb Binding Machine.

Very useful machine; great overall
5 June 2019

I was hesitant to purchase a binding machine at first, but then I kept coming up with all kinds of uses for it. It is easy to use; however, I did have to reprint several pages because they weren't pushed into the machine fully and the holes punched crooked (even though I only inserted 5 pages at a time). I had to take extra care to make sure all the pages were fully inserted into the machine before punching. The only other (minor) drawback is the quantity of binding coils you have to buy. They're sold - at a minimum - in packs of 25, some sizes only come in packs of 100. I bought this for household use, so in order to have several sizes to choose from, I have to buy many more coils than I will ever need. Overall, though, it works well and I see myself using it ... MoreI was hesitant to purchase a binding machine at first, but then I kept coming up with all kinds of uses for it. I especially like the ability to add and remove pages.
