A wonderful re-imagining of a JRPG classic

There are some unnecessary extras to pad out the game but I think it was a ton of fun regardless. The new plot elements with the ghosts are strange and I don't really like their inclusion. FF7R manages to make a masterful hybrid between action-based and turn-based combat with the command menu mechanic. It feels very rewarding to learn the combat as you gradually get better at it and eventually master the game's ATB and party member switching systems. The re-imagined bosses are insanely epic. The new music arrangements for FF7's iconic tunes are mind blowing. The gripping Materia system is back alongside summons. A new feature in the remake is weapon upgrading which makes each weapon viable for the whole game depending on the abilities you choose.Highly recommend this game to FF7 veterans and newcomers alike!

An Amazing Retelling of a Legendary Game

Every boss has it own track, or a variation of a track. Every area has a unique track. No matter where you go or what you fight in the game the music stands out and really pulls you in to the experience, be it happy, intense, mysterious, or sad.The story is already known to be one of the greatest in gaming, since 1997. And this is the same here, the story is amazing and ranges from exciting to heart breaking. This game takes it and heavily expands on it making you feel closer to the characters than ever before. In my opinion, it does a far better job than the original in the way you connect with the characters. Yes, there are changes to the original story. But this is a Remake and a sort of retelling, so im ok with it not being 100% the same. The new additions to the original story are for the most part interesting and creates a sense of mystery for even fans of the original.Combat for me was a perfect balance of action and menu based combat. The game is full action combat but with a tactical pause when you open the menu to cast spells or heal. The hybrid system works well IMO. The combat requires you to switch between your party members in battle to handle different enemy types or make use of a characters charged up ATB (used for their unique attacks or spells). It makes combat fun, varied, and keeps all the characters involved preventing it from getting boring. The materia system is used to augment gems onto your weapons and armor to setup a character anyway you want. Give them spells, or healing, status buffs,, or unique combat abilities. Each character can do anything, but is definitely best at things closer to their base unique abilities, I.E Tifa is a close range brawler so I didnt focus on putting too much magic on her and instead increased survivability, speed, and attack. It all works well and there are a bunch of different combinations, all viable. This game is part 1 of a multipart saga that expands greatly on the original. Therefore, this is not the entire ff7 story, this only covers roughly 10-20% of the original game, but greatly expanded that section into a full game thats about 40-50 hours long if you take your time and do everything (probably about 25-30 hours if you just do main story). I can't wait for part 2, as they ended this game off in a very satisfying and interesting way that leaves the future open to many possibilities. Here's hoping they do as great a job on the next part as this one. Even though im open to some retelling, i can't help but hope they still honor the original as much as they did in part 1 and not change TOO MUCH. The original is considered to be one of the best RPGS of all time for a reason.

Knowing for years that this was only going to be the Midgar section of the game, I was therefore not surprised when that was, indeed, the truth. So, my review will not refer to this aspect as it was heavily promoted and well known and anyone taken by surprise by this is either lying or didn't read two words about the game.As a the first part of a remake, the game succeeds. Tremendous care and quality have been shown into rendering the full experience of Midgar--an experience that was lasted only four to six hours in the original, depending on your playthrough. Given the importance of the city and the amazing view of it players were given in the original game, it was a joy to finally move through each part of it.While the game is shorter than most stand-alone FF games at around 50-60 hours, I believe this will vary with each successive segment, especially when the world really opens up. Whiel it wasn't presented as such, I still treated this game as a prologue of sorts to the games that are to come. I don't mean that the story is all prologue, but that the game itself is a prologue to the forthcoming games. I may be completely wrong, but I expect the others, with the possible exception of the last one, to be much longer than this--somwhere around the 100 - 120 hour mark. It's not absolutely perfect, but it is an excellent expansion of a location and story that seemed far too short in the original. Perhaps this is why Midgar is basically given its own game. It may have always meant to have been more but time, technical, and data constraints made it impossible when releasing the original. So, for those of you who enjoyed the original game and were entranced by Midgar but felt short shrifted by the short amount of time spent there, this will be a revelation. For those players who were expecting a full scale epic on par with other FF games, well, you were warned again and again and again.

Final Fantasy 7 is great but....

Back on the PS1 this was one of my favorite games of all time, the fact Square Enix actually remade a masterpiece timeless classic game for modern consoles and gamers without sacrificing what made the original so beloved is a true accomplishment. I was very concerned if they could actually do it. After the horrible hollow empty lifeless game that is Final Fantasy 15 I didn't think they could do modern FF game justice not to mention the short comings KH3 left me feeling. DLC you can't play if you don't have a PS5, yup that's right if you payed your hard earned $60 (or more depending if you got the deluxe or collector's) well your tough out of luck! There excuse is the DLC was made with PS5 tec but I call BS on that because it looks pretty much like 7 and you know they reused old assets they already had to make it.Also if your a collector and want the physical on ps5 to get the dlc on disc (as its included in the package) well sorry to tell ya this but the dlc is not on the disc it's a voucher code! It seems like Square Enix takes one step forward 2 steps back. Honestly it's left a sour taste in my mouth and I think I will wait tell all parts of the game (no telling how many there will be) and wait for them all to be bundled together in some super collector's or a All in 1 pack like with KH collection.

Gorgeous, dramatic, and exciting

This game defies all expectations when it comes to how gorgeous a game can be. The introductory levels convey an incredible sense of drama and life, while the later levels convey a sense of scale that this story definitely deserves. The character models are both visually impressive, and beautifully expressive, which allows minor characters to really shine in a way that they never could in the original version. Some minor graphical hiccups occur (unloaded or poor textures on some places, people popping in randomly), but these are infrequent and not distracting enough to inhibit the artistic direction of the game in any meaningful way.The combat has a great weight and flow, despite being somewhat tricky at first. The game could definitely have done a better job with its tutorials; this is not Dark Souls! But overall I found that I was able to manage the vast majority of the game myself on Normal. Only a couple annoying fights near the end gave me significant trouble, one of which is due to a developer mistake in a regular encounter. The materia system allows for a ton of flexibility and creativity on the part of the player, which is always refreshing! The only major issue I had with the game is the "Nomura needs an editor" problem that occasionally crops up in titles such as Kingdom Hearts. Without spoiling anything, the second to last chapter is an incredibly long and somewhat dull slog with almost nothing directly pertinent to the story, while the last chapter is a mad rush of both insanely intricate (and wildly impressive) boss fights and an unbelievable amount of plot exposition. The issue is that the last chapter really doesn't have enough explanation for the complexity of what is going on, and the final fights can feel a touch undeserved because of this confusion. But lurking just under the surface of this obscurity is a truly phenomenal plot and some incredible creative action. This pretty much comes down to a pacing and cryptic language issue in the last chapter. Trust me, a second play through will be infinitely more rewarding with the understanding of events you will get in the last chapter.I would highly recommend this game to anyone, though only with the caveat that you should not be afraid to use the internet when you get the "I'm not totally sure I follow" feeling; you will get a lot more out of it if you manage to understand the small details.

Mixed feelings, but overall enjoyable

I am a big fan of the original and this has been an overall enjoyable experience for me. I love seeing the fully realized environments I remember so well from 20 years ago, and the new arrangements of the music I know every note of by heart. While no longer turn-based, the combat is still really fun; feeling like a more polished idea of what Final Fantasy XV tried to do. The materia system was brought over from the original and for good reason; it's a great class system, as is the weapon upgrade system which allows you even more freedom over the build of the characters. The English voice cast did a really good job, no complaints there. The story doesn't stray too far from the original, but there are things added that definitely don't respect the original events. ... MoreI am a big fan of the original and this has been an overall enjoyable experience for me. I would much rather they stuck strictly to the events of the original, as it was branded one of the greatest games of all time for a reason. Much like George Lucas and the original Star Wars trilogy, you're opening up disaster by changing anything that made the original great. I'll have to see where they take it from here. The game is unfortunately plagued with a ton of parts that severely interrupt the momentum of the gameplay and make no sense narratively. The developers are apparently obsessed with having Cloud move through narrow spaces at 2 inches an hour (some claim this is to replace loading screens, but there are SO MANY parts in the game where it is so brief and unnecessary, that using this to render the environment doesn't make any sense), or awkwardly climb over a tiny gap using monkey bars hanging overhead. This is a guy that can jump like 50 feet in the air, why are we forced to use extremely slow methods to getting through some areas? There are many other small segments throughout the game that could have seriously been pruned and nothing of value would be lost.I am not sure how this game stands on its own without the nostalgia factor of having played the original. The original FFVII released in an age with game mechanics that we have grown out of and find incredibly clunky and awkward today. This was one of the main reasons why they opted away from the turn-based combat and give you something more real time. However, there are stlil many questionable design choices that contradict this greatly. For someone who hasn't played the original, the combat and story might be enjoyable, but the general hyper-linear gameplay forcing you to go down narrow pathways the entire game with not much opportunity for exploration might be a turn off.

Not as good as the original

The Final Fantasy VII Remake is a good game for fans of the series but it felt like an overall frustrating experience. One of my major problems with the game is the amount of filler as you are moving through the story. Story scenarios which were more concise in the original game are now padded and slow down the gameplay. Another frustrating element is the large amount of bridges and tight spaces you need to crawl through, ladders you need to climb. This events introduce animations which quickly become repetitive and time wasting. The gameplay is not bad but not fun, the bosses feel like HP sponges and take too long. Play the original game first if you have not.

The same but different

After trying 2 sellers on eBay that both turned out to be fake, ordered from WalMart without any issue and it was delivered ahead of schedule. The game itself is excellent, it makes some definite changes from the original and is more of a reimagining but it is a lot of fun all on its own. Visuals and music are top notch, voice acting is mostly well done, battle system is action style much like the other recent FF games. I would have preferred turn-based but it still works. You can save anywhere outside battle in the game which is nice. It still has weapons, armor, and materia plus accessories to play around with. The story varies from loosely following the original to doing its own thing but it is still well done. The story varies from loosely following the original to doing its own thing but it is still well done. Of course this is only Part 1 of the remake, they really shouldn't be marketing or naming it as FF7 remake, it is not the whole story by any stretch - just the Midgar portion with some extra stuff added to make it into a full playtime. The new content added is fun but I would have preferred them to just make more progress on the original content and flesh it out. Another thing to note is that the game is mostly on rails, pretty similar to FF13 in that there is definitely no open world and may be a couple sidepaths to take but you will run into invisible walls and characters telling you 'not that way!' all the time. Even with all that taken into consideration, I still find it worthy of a 5 star rating just because how well done everything else is and how it is excellent to get to play as Cloud and friends in a more modern take. The original FF7 isn't going anywhere and is still great itself, but this remake part 1 does well in making something in the same setting that is worth playing.

The modern graphics and gameplay enhance that goal, as the game moves seamlessly between character dialogue, cinematic cut scenes, and gameplay. The real time combat system works well at updating the core essence of the turn-based system, although there is a learning curve for those who haven’t played a FF game in a while. One of the major improvements is that Midgar feels much more alive and immersive than the original. Instead of interacting with each NPC, non essential dialogue is eavesdropped automatically. This makes it feel like things are going on outside of the main characters’ experience. However, all main dialogue and character interactions occur mostly during cut scenes. These scenes include more dialogue and plot than the original (a plus) but at the same time veterans of the original who liked mashing square during the plot dialogue may become impatient waiting for the scenes to play out.
