Thank you to Celadon Books for an Advanced Reading Copy of Finding Freedom by Erin French. Erin's relationship with food started early in life, while she grew up in rural Maine on a farm, picking fruits and vegetables and working in her father's diner. She now owns The Lost Kitchen, a famous and acclaimed world dining destination in Freedom, Maine; however, her road to success was a long and difficult one. She struggled as a jobless single mother and survived a toxic marriage which led to the rock bottom of drug and alcohol addiction that almost destroyed her. She triumphed by determinedly focusing on her beloved son and her love of food as a means to bring joy to others. Her writing is beautiful, evocative, honest and sensuous. Finding Freedom made me appreciate the sheer hard work and sacrifice that goes into starting and running a restaurant. I just devoured this book and was so interested in The Lost Kitchen, I visited the website to look at the beautiful photographs. WOW. Wow wow wow!A solidly built and executed memoir is one of my new, favorite, preferred genres. Erin French brings readers one that you just fall in love with before flipping to the second page. From first page to the last, French brings readers into the folds of her life - a necessary for any good memoir - and takes them on a journey of loss and discovery. The ups and downs as French rebuilds her life time and time again give every reader a lesson in what really matters and how you can truly build the life you dream. There is also an aspect of this memoir that is built around the strength of women. Good read. Interesting life story.

There were a few more details I would have loved - like how she resolved all those original restaurant debts, medical debts, plus enough for a new start up. A few details on the therapy she received AFTER the extremely brief rehab would be great too, but its a good & compelling read as-is. Her strength & resilience is very inspiring.

This book tells Erin's story of failure and success in the most beautiful way. I found it to be a touching revelation of her integrity and strength.

Heartfelt memoir
20 April 2021

Finding Freedom is a heartfelt, immersive memoir by Erin French, the owner and chef of an in-demand restaurant (the New York Times credits her with having made "a tiny Maine town a dining destination").I don't typically reach for chef memoirs, but I gave this one a chance and could not put it down. French does not flinch at sharing intimate details with the reader, but it didn't feel like her struggles were romanticized or shared to evoke sympathy - they just *were.* They're a part of her story as much as the high points. And in that sense, this singular memoir was actually pretty relatable. The food descriptions are lush; I'd absolutely recommend this book to anyone with a particular interest in cooking and/or eating. But it's also a memoir about living through ... MoreFinding Freedom is a heartfelt, immersive memoir by Erin French, the owner and chef of an in-demand restaurant (the New York Times credits her with having made "a tiny Maine town a dining destination").I don't typically reach for chef memoirs, but I gave this one a chance and could not put it down. I can't think of a single time I've cried while reading the acknowledgments of a book. No doubt it happened because of the emotional attachment I developed while reading Erin French's Finding Freedom, which as a reader makes this book-and Erin-incredibly special. I haven't been able to stop telling everyone about the book, which may or may not be a sign of my obsession with her story.Erin's story stands out, not because it's unusual, but because it's familiar: The emotionally abusive men in her life who withheld their love from her; an unexpected pregnancy that led to giving up her dream of becoming a doctor; a mother that stood silently strong by her side, encouraging her when needed and always loving her. It's this connection with the reader, told with a voice that could easily be their own, that made it difficult for me to put Finding Freedom down. With her engaging, sometimes brutally honest voice, Erin takes readers on a journey from her father's small diner in Freedom, Maine to her unprecedented international success with her restaurant, The Lost Kitchen. In between she never stopped dreaming of having her own place, even as she prepared meals in pop-up settings on local farms, sharing her locally sourced meals with friends and strangers alike. She holds nothing back as she shares the horrors of her first marriage which, combined with her prescription drug addiction, struggles with anxiety and depression, and the loss of custody of her son, brought her to her knees, some place she didn't stay for long.As a woman, I found Erin's story inspiring and, as I finished reading Finding Freedom, I felt as though I'd made a new friend. Her ability to own her mistakes made her someone I could relate to, drawing me further into the book; her ability to get back up every time life knocked her down gave me hope; and her unrelenting drive to make her dreams a reality was unequivocally inspirational.

Inspiring and Hopeful Memoir

Do not read or listen to this book while hungry; you will regret it! Although, while reading and listening, I was hungry 90% of the time. The food descriptions are incredible! This new memoir by the famous chef, Erin French, is a must read for foodies!Erin herself did the narration, and her emotions came through so clearly. The restaurant soon was selling out for the entire year on the Spring day when they first opened their reservations for the year. They were quickly overwhelmed with reservation requests and came up with a new system: send a postcard to Freedom, Maine and a random selection will be done for the upcoming season. I thought this was such a cute idea, and it was done to drum up the postal office in the small town of Maine.I'm off to write my postcard and dream about delicious foods from this book!

I received a free ARC from Celadon Books.Erin French's story about growing up in her parents' diner and falling in love with cooking before leaving for college, getting derailed and restarting her dreams has a "don't give up" aspect to it. Her writing is entertaining and inviting despite the grittiness of some of the content. It takes pressure to make diamonds and she certainly has made an overwhelming success of The Lost Kitchen. I was interested in learning more about it from her website, but the Pandemic has shut things down so I had to amuse myself by re-reading the food descriptions in the book which make my mouth water. The freshness and local aspect of her ingredients make them sound much more appetizing than anything that has traveled to reach the grocery ... MoreI received a free ARC from Celadon Books.Erin French's story about growing up in her parents' diner and falling in love with cooking before leaving for college, getting derailed and restarting her dreams has a "don't give up" aspect to it. Erin French tells a very raw, honest, and deeply thoughtful story in "Finding Freedom." The reader is taken through her journeys, struggles, and absolute rock bottom experiences in life, as Erin paints a richly detailed and emotionally vivid canvas of her story through the pages of her memoir.I greatly admire her strength to go through the toxic relationships, battle addiction and mental health concerns, and emerge on the other side, still motivated to keep going and eventually go on to start the famous and exclusive "Lost Kitchen" restaurant. Erin then went on to revisit her experiences in vivid detail when writing this memoir, which was probably not an easy or comfortable thing to do. Perhaps it is her writing style, but it was a bit unusual for a memoir-style book.Thank you to Bookish First for an ARC!
