Edith Nesbit was a mischievous child who grew up into an unconventional adult. With her husband, Hubert Bland, she was one of the founder members of the socialist Fabian Society; their household became a centre of the socialist and literary circles of the times. Nesbit turned late to children's writing. Her first children's book, The Treasure Seekers, was published in 1899 to great acclaim. Other books featuring the Bastable children followed, and a series of magical fantasy books, including Five Children and It also became very popular. The Railway Children was first published monthly in the London Magazine in 1905, and published as a book in 1906, which has been in print ever since. I am currently reading this book to my eight year daughter. While I am enjoying it, she seems to find it a little slow. The premise - the children finding an ancient sand fairy which can grant one wish a day - is wonderful and full of promise but each chapter is rather long and ponderous. However the moral "be happy with what you've got" weaves its ways through the plot and the characters are like real children, not storybook characters, so the dialogue is a lot of fun to read aloud.

It is summer holidays in 1900 and five children, Robert, Anthea, Jane, Cyril and their baby brother find a sand fairy, a psammead (sammyadd) in a gravel pit. This is the beginning of many fantastic adventures in this and in the following two books. Wonderful stories, with jokes for parents too.Tell me," said Anthea,'why don't our wishes turn into stone now?""Autres temps, autres moeurs" said the creature. Is that the Ninevite language?' asked Anthea, who had learned no foreign language at school except French.Highly recommended .

Doesn't need anymore explanation Lord RJHOLLINS
I got this to read to my five year old sons. They absolutely adored hearing all about the sand fairy and the children's adventures. It's so well written and entertaining for both the adults and children.
This hard cover book is in perfect condition. I'm glad I purchased it because it will make a good gift.
it was great
