Broke it and can’t Fixie

There is a tiny little hex screw that holds the arm to the knob, and it can work itself loose. If you can’t find the tiny part, or strip it because you don’t have a micro tiny hex set, this grinder is done. Prima won’t exchange it and they won’t help you get a replacement screw. It’s a cool grinder but I can’t recommend it, nor Prima.

Excellent and Reliable for remote espresso

I have been using this with a double shot hand espresso machine for the last year. I travel to remote locations and It reliably produces the grind set and helps me make an excellent double shot espresso anywhere I can make hot water. Great, reliable bit of my travel kit.

It's quite Good. I recommend.

Orphan Fixie hand grinder is really good. Well-made. light. suitable for hand. I have satisfactory results. But it's a little dissatisfied with 1) The inlet is narrow and uncomfortable. 2) want spare plug in case of losing it. 3) The separation and dismantling are getting on my nerves.Despite all these minor inconveniences, I really recommend this gear. I really satisfied with results. Because I can get excellent coffee with good aroma, clean-cup.

Love my OE Fixie!
7 September 2020

My primary impetus in ordering a hand grdiner was being without power for 4+ days in early August, due to tropical storm Isaias. Like most coffee geeks, I only purchase whole bean coffee. Until now, my only grinders were electric (Vario & Atom 75). I plan to also use the Fixie while traveling and may even bring it into the office...if I ever return (2021). I found Doug & Barb's (OE owners) YouTube instruction manual helpful. Now that I've had my Fixie for at least a month, I'm pleased to report I've used it for regular drip, Chemex, V60, Aeropress and French Press. Grinding for all these coffee types always resulted in quality in the cup. I was also impressed to fit 50g (at capacity) of beans in the grind chamber (just remember the catch may require a 'dump' before ... MoreMy primary impetus in ordering a hand grdiner was being without power for 4+ days in early August, due to tropical storm Isaias. One thing I love about hand grinding is the wonderful smell! I love the simplicity of this grinder. The famous quote, 'Simplicity is the ultimate form of sophistication' comes to mind. I'm very pleased with this purchase and highly recommend the OE Fixie for anybody considering a lightweight, travel-ready hand grinder. I should add that I'm a cyclist who actually owns a 'fixie', or fixed gear bicycle, and I have an appreciation for carbon fiber and titanium (and Delrin).

New Office Grinder
3 August 2020

The grinder is a pleasure to use and looks great in my work area. I've had a Lido 3 at home for couple of years and finally broke down and got a grinder for the office.

Finally a quality portable hand grinder that can fringe up to 30 grams of beans.

Small but Mighty

Small, light, beautifully balanced in your hand and a perfect grind for our Bellman. We want it for travelling and are so impressed with it. Really glad we spent the money on the Fixie. Highly recommend

The best
16 March 2023

Traveling around US w limited storage capability. Bought the Fixie so that I could enjoy my pour overs w fresh ground locally sourced beans. Did not disappoint. Superb design and quality materials. Lightweight and low volume. Easy to adjust. Simple operation. It just works. Enjoy.

Top tier construction but not without flaws

I purchased mine in 2020 and have had it for 2 years. I have used it for about 50% of my daily morning coffee grinding. Excellent build quality overall and does deliver excellent grind quality and consistency.Love that it fits inside the back of an aeropress. I've taken it on some very remote hikes and it packs down very well in terms of size when inserted into the back of an aeropress and the titanium grinds cup is removed along with the handle. The Ti grinds cup is mind bendingly light for a metal cup. The Burset is durable and has stayed sharp for the 2 years I've owned it.However it's not without its flaws. The Teflon shims wear reasonably quickly and the carbon fibre handle has sharp edges that can cut your knuckles when grinding. My handle grip did come loose once but I put low strength loctite on the screw and it's been perfect ever since. The Bushing system that supports the main shaft develops play over time and I'm not sure whether or not they can be easily replaced by the owner.

quirky in all the right ways

I’m a big fan of Orphan Espresso’s prioritizing function over form, and looked first to OE when I decided to buy a travel grinder. The Fixie breaks down instantly for cleaning, and has effectively zero grinds retention (15.0g beans in = 15.0g grinds out). It’s so small and light that carrying it to work or on trips adds a trivial amount of weight and bulk to my bag. While one won’t mistake its particle distribution for that of a $500 ghost burr grinder, I do find the coffee it produces to be easily on par with that of my Lido 3. The grind adjustment and side-loading of the beans, while initially seeming odd, is a totally effective design choice. It takes me less than five seconds to switch from my usual pour over setting to AeroPress, as fast or faster as making a ... MoreI’m a big fan of Orphan Espresso’s prioritizing function over form, and looked first to OE when I decided to buy a travel grinder. The Fixie breaks down instantly for cleaning, and has effectively zero grinds retention (15.0g beans in = 15.0g grinds out).
