Nevermind it's a left-hand zip... I'm already used to that from one other Fjallraven jacket I own. The real issue is that the lower zip loves to get caught on the interior plackett when it's ~3" from the bottom, forcing me to use 2 hands to get the jacket off sometimes but not always. I threw some wax on the plackett and melted it in good but it's still got a mind of its own.- The hood. I love Fjallraven's hoods, for the most part, however this one has a Sonic the Hedgehog vibe going on while the hood is deployed and fitted to my head. Also it's as if the neck is too long or the hood is too deep, vertically... it would fit great if I were wearing a helmet or three hats stacked on top of eachother.- This has the same velcro sleeve ends as the Abisko Lite Trekking Jacket (which I also have, and how I learned how much I LOVE/hate Fjallraven Jackets) which are just about worthless after a year of use as the velcro loses almost all of its sticktivity; I make a point of NOT adjusting the sleeve ends on this jacket. Maybe one day years down the road I'll take it in and have someone install snap buttons instead.- The hand pockets are somewhat shallow, and only have fleece lining on the outside.So for all the complaints, I could easily justify each design consideration with two positives. This is a jacket you have to want, it's not your classical minivian of jackets like a Columbia would be. I wanted it and I'm glad I have it. The materials are very nice and the heavier G-1000 on the shoulders and hood sucked up a layer of wax happily. I'm looking forward to wearing this jacket out and putting it through its paces. Hopefully nothing stupid like the big chunky zipper start (that's plastic) doesn't break, as that might be a difficult fix and render the jacket totaled.And I didn't even talk about the buttons yet! The combination of Bottom, Top and Tip-top buttons, combined with the two way zipper, enable the wearer (me) the ability to very finely tune just how "on" I want this jacket to be, which is nice. I'd like if there were other ventilation options like their warm weather jackets have, but at the end of the day this is moreso a casual jacket than a bone-a-fide "trekking jacket", at least IMO.

I have rather long arms 36” sleeve and it’s hard finding a jacket that accommodates my build. I was torn between the Fjallraven and Patagonia. I opted for the Fjallraven due to it being a bit more durable. The reviews saying the jacket was tight in the chest were spot on. I'm really enjoying this jacket. Great for PNW winters and traveling to colder destinations. This jacket comes with a light layer of wax imbedded in the canvas, not noticeable from a texture/color standpoint, but if you get some light rain you'll be dry. As I'm heading out to Jackson WY I've added a bit more of a wax layer by purchasing and applying some Greenland wax. Easy enough to apply with heat gun/hairdryer This did stiffen the fabric slightly but I could carry water in this jacket from point A to B if I were to make a bowl shape. To be clear; I wouldn't do this as you'd likely get the inside of the jacket wet by dipping it into water, but it does become that water resistant. In the above photos I am wearing a cotton T-shirt as well as a Polartec pullover fleece under the jacket and I have plenty of room without it feeling tight or uncomfortable. I could easily have added a merino wool shirt under the Polartec as well with no problems.As far as water repellency goes it was such right out of the package. I wanted basically waterproof so I mixed up some “Greenland wax” myself consisting of 90% gulf paraffin wax and 10% beeswax. Poured into bar using a soap mold from hobby lobby. After it hardened I used it to put a heavy coat of wax on the hood and shoulders and a lighter coat on the rest of the jacket with the exception of the armpits because I wanted them to vent as much as possible. The pic of the jacket where it looks frosted is before melting the wax in. The other pics are after melting it into the fabric.I melted the wax into the cloth with a hairdryer and then tossed the jacket in the dryer on high heat for about 10-15 minutes with some other clothes to ensure it was evenly soaked in everywhere.Overall I’m very happy with this jacket. I got rid of my synthetic rubbery rain jacket because I hated that it didn’t breathe and wasn’t as durable in the woods as this one will be. Hope this review and sizing info helps someone.

The Skogso jacket blurs the line enough to make me think that maybe one type of jacket really can do it all. I was skeptical of the G-1000 fabric, but so far it seems great. It's not ultralight, but probably light enough, and seems to hold up to heavy winds and pretty steady precipitation.The sizing is interesting. I would say that it runs fairly large, based on the measurements cited in the sizing chart. I'm 6' even, around 175 pounds, with roughly a 41-42 inch chest, and the size medium fits me with more than plenty of room to spare, for layering. If I'd have ordered a large, which I was initially going to do, I'd be swimming in that size.

Tested in -15C Canadian WinterFit:- Many of the reviews I have read about Fjallraven jackets say to size down. I am glad that I sized down from Small to Extra Small (for reference I'm 5'6", weight 140 lbs). I was initially afraid sizing down to XS size would not let me layer sweaters, however the XS let's me layer up to three layers under the jacket no problem. If you have an average weight to height ratio I strongly recommend you size down for Fjallraven jackets. If you have above average weight, bust, or belly I would recommend you choose your normal size in Fjallraven jackets. I am glad that I sized down from Small to Extra Small (for reference I'm 5'6", weight 140 lbs). I was initially afraid sizing down to XS size would not let me layer sweaters, however the XS let's me layer up to three layers under the jacket no problem. If you have an average weight to height ratio I strongly recommend you size down for Fjallraven jackets. If you have above average weight, bust, or belly I would recommend you choose your normal size in Fjallraven jackets. My impression is Fjallraven is not a "modern style" or "city commuter refined style" like Canada Goose incase that is what you are looking for.Warmth:- Tested on a 15 min walk in mid-January Canadian winter sunny day at -15C (5F) with no wind outside (note - I also wore thermal top + bottom long base layer underwear + thick material long sleave mid layer top + denim pants + thick gloves, thick socks and fur lined insulated winter hat). - It kept me warm and comfortable during my 15 min walk. I have no doubt the Skogso jacket will be warm and comfortable with just a shirt up to -5C (23F) anything below that or during cold windy days you will have to layer up appropriately.Jacket sleeve:- As mentioned by other reviewers yes the sleeve is long. However I sized down and the sleeve isn't much of an issue. The slightly longer sleeve does help when you stretch your arm and the material isn't riding up. There is a Velcro to tighten it at your wrist.Zipper:- As mentioned by other reviewers the zipper is on the other side (European?) and it also requires me to keep it perfectly straight with the bottom zipper tab when zipping up. It is a bit weird but I don't think it's a big issue and something I will get used to. The jacket comes with a twin bottom zipper which I find useful to undo when I am seated in the car. There are plenty of pockets on this jacket...the outer pockets all have zippers.Hood:- lightly insulated hood is a great feature that kept me warm in the very coldest temperature.Bottomline: if you are looking for a winter jacket with warmth as your primary objective there are plenty of other brands like North Face that offer better warmth for a much better price than Fjallraven. If you are looking for a "modern style" or "city commuter refined style" AND you are willing to pay double the price material quality and name I would recommend Canada Goose. If you are looking for a "rustic style" or "Nordic timelessly simple but defined quality style" AND you are willing to pay more for the quality I would recommend Fjallraven.I was looking for a different style than Canada Goose and I was willing to pay more for the style and quality of material - I went with the Fjallraven Skogso Padded Jacket and I would recommend this jacket for sub-zero Canadian winter weather with layering when appropriate.
Saw this jacket when I was looking for something to wear during the in between weather here in Vermont while hiking and backpacking. Came across this and just knew it would be perfect. It’s light enough so you don’t feel weighed down, but not too light that you feel you’ll destroy it quickly. Fjällraven is known for high quality gear, and this definitely lives up to that stigma. I love the pockets strategically placed for easy access to stowed items. The material feels like a heavy wrung cotton shirt, so breathes easily when trekking through the woods. Water rolls off this jacket like a ducks feather, and if you need to re-waterproof it, you just use the Greenland wax and a blow dryer.
