FLIR TG165-X MSX Thermal Camera

The Teledyne FLIR TG165-X 8.7 Hz/80 x 60 MSX Spot Thermal Camera, 51° x 66° FOV, -13 to 572°F Range dramatically reduces inspection and diagnostic time by helping you visually pinpoint the source of electrical, mechanical, and HVAC/R system faults. Instead of searching for temperature anomalies with a single-spot IR thermometer, this non-contact temperature measurement and imaging tool displays a thermal picture of your target including any hot spots or cold zones that could indicate a problem. See wires or components clearly and even read labels thanks to Teledyne FLIR patented MSX image enhancement, which adds visual details to full thermal images. The bullseye laser helps ensure you're always targeting the right component for measurement while the drop-tested, portable design with easy-to-use buttons and settings help you complete the job quickly and stress-free. With internal storage for up to 50,000 images and rechargeable Li-ion battery, the Teledyne FLIR TG165-X is ready to go right out of the box.

BEWARE: Manufacturing flaw in attaching face plate

Have ordered these twice because the first three were ALL BROKE in the same place. When originally received each of the face plates fell off when unboxed. Noticed that the face plate was attached with very small screws, and the plastic bracket that attaches the face plate was broke(Noticed small plastic bits inside unit). Thought the case may have been dropped in transport, so re-ordered. Same thing was wrong in next batch. Defiantly a FLAW.

Best value for the money and works great.

Purchased this to monitor some NTE thermistors and locate hot spots on a system we build. Note to users, a little curser alignment helps and is easy to do with the thumb button interface. Side benefit: I walked around my house with furnace full blast and located a few spots where mice came in in the winter. It takes solid pictures as well. Note as you may have read, the IR camera is separate from the thermal sensor but it really makes no difference. I would buy it again.

I bought the Flir TG165 to help maintain my home boiler and the heating systems of my family members. So far I have monitored the zone system valves for proper operation and discovered some areas with weak insulation. The TG165 lets me visualize gaps in duct and wall insulation and the need for extra layers on my water heater. The resolution is perfect for my use and even allows inspection of electrical panels for defective breakers. The Flir has been a great purchase.

Works like intended, has a carrying strap and case. Very durable. Image pretty good. Has a app you can download on your phone but I have not used it yet.

Great thermal camera, great price!
10 April 2022

We purchased this thermal camera since I am the property manager of an apartment building that used to be an old school. We've been chasing leaks trying to diagnose the source, and when we finally purchased this camera it made everything so simple we are kicking ourselves for not purchasing it a year ago. Customer service was excellent, shipping was faster than expected, and we will definitely shop here again. Thank you!

Low resolution
26 December 2018

Whether or not this is a "good" product depends on what you are using it for. I have a very nice Flir camera and this does not compare at all. Of course it costs about 30 times what this one does as well.If low resolution is not an issue this is a very handy compact tool. I found the image to be more clear on B/W when I have had difficulty determining what object is hot.Overall it does perform as it is intended, just don't think this is going to take the place of an expensive camera when resolution is needed. It does reduce using the expensive camera (and the associated damage risk) when low resolution is acceptable.I do wish the range was adjustable, but again I am spoiled by the much more expensive one with a plethora of options!

MUCH better than the Std TG-165
27 September 2020

The tg-165 I have purchased in the past and does the job but harder to record or check objects without thermal edges. The tg-165X with the overlay camera fixes that problem. I can now record temperatures with the overlayed image showing the product and temps. The 165 would just show colour if there was temp changes. I have now "passed down" the 165. The 165x does exactly what I want.

Name brand price. Budget level features - but it does what it is designed to.

It's a FLIR brand thermal camera. Rock solid build, drop resistant.Temperature sensitivity is good enough to trace heat loss when diagnosing automotive A/C or heater issues, finding faulty wires in my furnace or poor solder joints on some circuits I work on.Features are budget level - only reads temperature at the center - no hot/cold spot metering.Thermal imaging cells are expensive - resolution will be low and looking at images later might be confusing (like baby ultrasound images)I waited for mine to go on sale locally and bought it with gift/spoil me money. There is now a MAXIMUM brand camera for less money - I might have bought it instead, but have been satisfied with the FLIR build quality so far.Best use case is finding my black kitten under ... MoreIt's a FLIR brand thermal camera. TG165 - Good entry level imager
23 August 2015

A good imaging thermometer which is adequate for objects bigger than 6mm, preferably 12mm across. The thermal image is not itself calibrated so you cannot determine and the temperature is not stored for any single pixel. Instead, a spot thermal detector reads temperature reasonably accurately (maybe 2 deg C low on my unit using emissivity settings from manual). The image allows you to find hot or cold spots that can be checked with the spot meter or determined by other means if smaller than 6mm (1/4 inch). Finding the hot spot with the thermal meter for a reading can be difficult up close (less than 2 feet, about 65cm or so) because of parallax. If you need to work with small components or up close, you need the E4 at a minimum.

Before buying this make sure you know this isn't 'Thermal Camera', it's an infrared Thermometer with Thermal imaging capabilities. That said, if this suits your intended purpose the TG165 is definitely a worthy purchase. The thermometer casing is rock solid. The accompanying carry case is definitely required as the lens remains exposed at all times, making it susceptible to becoming dirty and scratched if not stored away.In terms of functionality, it works well to help identify hots pots in electronic circuits which aren't densely populated. The trigger which operates the two infrared averaging lasers helps when trying to pinpoint an area, however the feature of taking a photo when the trigger is released can be somewhat disruptive to workflow when the picture remains on the screen for a few seconds.A quick list of pros and cons:Pros:-Very rugged.-Reliable. Excellent quality.-Low price (Relative to $Ks for an actual Thermal Camera)-Sleek, ergonomic design. Feels pretty good to hold.-Battery lasts a while before needing a recharge.Cons:-Picture Resolution may not be high enough for some applications.-The battery is completely sealed within the case and is impossible to remove without damaging the case if it ever dies. So some hacking with a rotary tool will be required if the battery ever needs changing. In short, this is a very handy tool to have around and has served me well.I would also like to add that initially there was a mix up with my order, but Reduction Revolution has been totally top notch in their customer support, hence I highly recommend buying from them and look forward to dealing with them again myself.
