I bought a cheap one and had nothing but trouble finding the actual location of a stud. Got fed up with the cheap junk, and bought a Franklin, and what a joy to work with this tool!!! It shows just where the stud is, and there isn't any second guessing. Spot on every time. Wish I had this years ago. You get what you pay form and the Franklin is worth every penny!!!

It does everything they say it does. I have used it several times since I got it and it takes all the guess work out of Accurately finding the studs and funding center. Great product I highly recommend it

The sensors probe deeply behind the wall at all times, about 1.5 inches. Because the Franklin stud senor is seven inches wide and has about thirteen sensors, it sometimes detects more than just a single item behind the wall at the same time, perhaps two studs or a single stud and a piece of conduit because the Franklin sensor is able to sense metal. I wish the stud sensor had a method for identifying weather the item detected is a stud or conduit. This stud sensor easily finds items hidden the wall. It is an improvement over the stud sensors I used in past if for nothing else its accuracy

Put to work immediately on an ongoing project. Does a good job finding studs on 1/2 sheet rock. Struggles a little on strike down texture but still gets the job done. Couple of not so good items. Cannot use 1.2v rechargeable batteries. Simple doesn't work so had to go to lithium AA so not worry about leaving alkaline batteries in and having acid leak. Second item is the switch placement is a bad idea. When you pinch this switch down, your knuckles hide the center LED's. Overall a good detector but has a few annoyances.
Excellent value. Great a locating studs. Way faster than knocking on the wall or using a magnet
I Gave 3 Yes' because I didn't want to say no to any of the questions...but my yes' aren't a RESOUNDING YES. At times it couldn't properly identify a stud, sometimes it had problems FOLLOWING the stud. It's better than those stud finders that use magnets but I'm not sure it's worthy of it's asking price...(hum). It's light (Made of plastic) so be patient and do not abuse this tool and it should (in theory) keep you from drilling many holes in your wall trying to find a stud.
On standard sheetrock, I've yet to find something better other than a magnet, however a magnet assumes the guy that put up the sheetrock hit the studs on center. If you really need to know exactly where the studs are centered, this is the tool for you. Saves time over the other tools because you're not going over the area looking for repeatability. It's right the first time. I would recommend sliding the tool across the sheetrock. Several LED's will light with the presence of a stud. As you slide it across the wall, the LED's will shift (one will go out and one on the other side will light). Stop at that moment and mark the center of your stud. Very accurate! I lent it to a friend to test on plaster and lath construction. Not terribly good results there.
I had big hopes for this. I wanted to run a wire inside a wall and needed to know what I was dealing with. I got crazy results that left me with no idea what is going on, The finder would signal in places I knew there were studs, but would also light up in places where I would not have expected - between studs. Suddenly all the lights would come on or flash. I don't know what it was finding in the wall. I know there is an oven on the other side of the wall. I don't know whether that confused the finder or not. I just feel like I wasted my money and I am afraid to cut into that wall.
After using the cheaper stud finders and getting very frustrated, I read about the Franklin product and gave it a shot. Yes it's much more expensive but IMO worth every penny. So much easier and more accurate than the others I have used.
The red dots are not precise at all, I end up making like 4-5 hashes and taking the average of when the red light first comes on. If you trust the red squares you can end up drilling into the side of the stud. Unfortunately, my old stud finder that turns on when it detects a stud is more useful/quicker in determining the edges of the stud... Not sure why there are raving reviews about this.
