I did not even try 33mm as single travel lens solution which will be good mostly for portraits and very tight for indoor photos (based on past experience with my 35mm). To my surprise the new 23mm is slightly more sharper. The reason I was surprised is, I see in many reviews about 18mm f1.4, distortion is optically corrected better than 23mm. I was hoping 18mm should be sharper than 23mm.* Took pictures from both lens from same distance as well as framed the same picture with same focus point. Both cases, 23mm came out slightly better in sharpness in all my comparisons. Note that you can see the difference only if you blow up the image to 200% in high resolution bigger monitor, do pixel peep and compare side by side.* I like the skin tone that 23mm produce (slightly better) in most portrait pictures.* closeup portraits (head/shoulder level) visibly distorted in 18mm. Do not see this in 23mm. Don't get me wrong, you will be very happy with 18mm if you just do half/full length portraits.* 23mm aperture ring and lens hood are slightly tighter than 18mm. My 16-55mm lens aperture ring is even more tighter than both lenses. I unintentionally changed the aperture ring of 18mm few times.* Only minor issue I see with 23mm is (not sure if this is even an issue), when taking portraits background objects look closer. This could be because of higher magnification in 23mm.* Overall IQ of both lens are pretty close. If you are inclined more towards capturing more of environment/landscape along with/without half/full length portraits go for 18mm. If you are inclined towards more close up portraits along with some environment, go with 23mm.* For slightly extra sharpness and undistorted closeup portraits I decided to keep 23mm WR. If you are not pixel peeper, you will not see any difference in sharpness of both lenses.

The lens is only one piece of the equation because the sensor and its processor must be excellent, too. The good news is Fujifilm makes excellent lenses for its cameras and those of us who shoot Fujifilm cameras know the sensor and processor are first rate. The 33 mm lens will definitely show you just how good the Fujifilm sensor and processor are. The image quality is there to behold when the image is finally processed and with this 33mm lens, if you get your exposure right in the field, there is not a lot you will have to do when processing the image. If any of you out there who are reading this decide to buy this lens, you will not be disappointed.

Great Fast Documentary Lens
4 April 2022

Purchased this lens for daily family pictures and for vacations, and have been very pleased so far. Took it on a week-long family vacation recently to a theme park and it performed great. The field of view is perfect for taking environmental portraits of nearby family members, and also works great for general scenic shots. I used to use the Fuji 23mm f/2 for these sorts of trips, but found the field of view a bit too tight when trying to capture family members close by, and for selfies. The extra field of view this 18mm offers is just what I was looking for. The focus speed and accuracy were excellent on my X-T3, and had no trouble keeping up with my two young kids. Paired with the X-T3, the total package weighed in right around 2lbs, which was really great for carrying around on long days. Sure, it's not as light weight as the 23/2, but the extra field of view it provides, along with being a stop faster and having superior IQ, make it worth it to me. As mentioned in so many other reviews, the sharpness and image quality are excellent. Highly recommend!

Improved in every way over the older XF 35mm 1.4

Pros: Tact-sharp across the frame, greater contrast, normal 50mm-equivelant focal length, silent focus motor, weather sealing, gorgeous metal constructionCons: Longer in dimension compared to older XF 35mm 1.4, ExpensiveCamera body: X-E3Ever since jumping into the X-series system in 2013, my primary lens for almost everything has been the venerable XF 35mm 1.4. I love the normal focal length of a 50mm-equivelant lens for shooting street photography and portraits and so it never seemed to leave my Fujifilm camera body. It was a stellar lens but it had it's faults, namely a noisy autofocus, soft edges at wide-open and slightly less sharpness in the center than I'd prefer. It was also a bit more telephoto than the 50mm-equivelant lens it was designed to emulate. In-spite of these, I adored that lens until I heard Fujifilm was producing this new XF 1.4 at 33mm. As soon as I read the reviews, I was sold! This lens outperforms the XF 35mm 1.4 in pretty much every way. Even at full-open, it is tact-sharp across the frame and the contrast rendering is improved. The focus motor is very quiet however it doesn't seem to be any faster at locking a target than the XF 35mm 1.4. The all-metal construction is beautiful to hold and touch, very rugged design and premium which is what I've come to expect from Fujifilm. It is longer than the XF 35 and a bit more heavy but not terribly so. The drastically improved optical performance offsets this minor gripe. The price is higher but with all the improvements, it was worth the extra money. Overall, I am very happy with this lens.

Incredible
26 November 2022

When it comes to image quality, I have some fairly high expectations. Prior to dipping my toes into fuji land I had (and still have) the nikon D850, D810 and numerous gold ring nikon glass that was some of the best they ever made for their f mount lineup. Because of this I waa hesitant to jump back to a crop sensor (X-T4) and this lens, but i took the plunge as I wanted a fun every day camera for family and light travel stuff. Needless to say, this lens has blown my expectations out of the water!! It's insanely sharp at all apertures throughout the entire frame and has no CA issues whatsoever. I have never experienced a crop sensor camera and lens combo this disgustingly good. Legendary

This lens is legendary. Sharp and contrasty wide open at f/1.4, improves through f/2-2/8 or so and still great at f/11. This is probably the best my 26mp sensor can look - in good light this lens is stunning and sharp. Great bokeh (very slight, typically unimportant onion ringing, however, when you PEEP).Close focusing - I love lenses that focus close and get good magnification like this one. It is a quasi macro type experience that makes it more flexible. Plus, I don't have to worry I'll put it into a hunting/focusing fit because a subject moved within the MFD.AF is fast and accurate, linear motor is nearly silent. I think I'm getting higher hit rates and good focusing speed relative to other Fuji lenses, even in crappier light. That alone makes this lens a ... MoreThis lens is legendary. That alone makes this lens a go-to compared to others I own.Lens is pretty small and light, but feels solid in hand - no issues bumping rings, stores well, well fitting lens hood. Great quality feel overall. Solid clicks from the aperture ring, manual focus ring is well damped (not too slow, or too fast). Aperture ring seems pointless however - it only locks the camera into auto. The only con is the high price - $900 is a lot to swallow for what this is, ultimately. Used at around $700 this lens is a better value. Overall, however, this lens is practically a must-buy, and certainly the best 23mm in the Fuji system at the moment.

Switched because smaller, lighter, and the locations of controls. Controls that bring me back to my first Olympus OM1 SLR in 1979. Not a gear guy, but love manual controls.Finding that I leave the 33mm f/1.4 on my camera the most. My main lens before was either the 18-55 f/2.8-4 that is a great lens with OIS for low light, and the 23mm f/2 WR also spent a lot of time on the camera because fo the WR and being outside. I prefer prime lenses, but don't like to carry a lot of gear. The 33mm replaced my 23mm because of focal length preference and especially for portraits. Like it more than my 18-55 with the f/1.4 for better depth of field option and WR. Low light capability is great, but the zoom with OIS and higher ISO of XT3 less of a need. Reviewing my photos shot with my zoom in editing, I find that I use the 33mm focal length the most.I'm not a pixel counter, but my pics using primes seem best to me.Given I like to travel light, the weight of this lens was a concern I had compared to the Fuji 35mm f/1.4 option. The 33mm is not a heavy lens and found the size works great for me. The WR is important because I spend a lot of time outdoors in areas like the ADKs to the South West desert.I still need my other focal lengths for composition; I can move my feet to get close when needed. For travel, I'll probably bring along my zoom and the 33mm and a 16mm f/2.8 WR. I love my 90mm f/2 if doing portraits or animals, but too heavy to just carry around. But looks like this 33mm will end on my camera most of the time for me.

Sharp, high quality optic

This lens is very sharp from f1.4 through to f16. It focuses very close allowing for some interesting differential focus effects at f1.4.Reviews about this lens are very very positive....overly effusive I'd say. The lens is excellent, although I'm not sure the perspective (27mm equivalent) is as useful as either a 16mm f1.4 or 23mm f1.4. These latter two are far more useful perspectives for landscapes/architecture and people respectively. Reviewers suggest 27/28mm is more useful for either - I'm not so sure about that. Also, I think the 16mm f1.4 has the same sharpness as the 18mm f1.4 with a far more useful perspective for landscapes. The best way to assess whether this is the right lens for you is to consider that most smart phones have a 27/28mm equivalent ... MoreThis lens is very sharp from f1.4 through to f16. I'm hoping that this will also turn out to be a good astro lens. It's sharp and useable at f1.4, so might turn in some really good milky way images (I hope).Overall a great lens, but make sure the 27/28mm equivalent perspective suits your brand of photography as it isn't a cheap lens.

The king of the Fuji line up!
21 June 2022

I've been shooting with the original XF23mm f/1.4 from the time it first came out, and I've been pretty happy with the image quality I've gotten from it. However, the autofocus has caused me to miss quite a few shots. I've also use the XF23mm f/2, which solves most autofocus issues but is lacking in image quality. I purchased the XF33mm f/1.4 and was absolutely thrilled with both the autofocus and image quality. Because of this experience, I was super eager to pull the trigger on the new XF23mm f/1.4 LM WR. In a nutshell, the new 23mm is hands down my favorite lens out of all the Fuji glass in my bag. From images quality to autofocus to color, this lens is absolutely superb! My other two 23mm's will be finding new homes in the very near future. I have no regrets ... MoreI've been shooting with the original XF23mm f/1.4 from the time it first came out, and I've been pretty happy with the image quality I've gotten from it.
