I love this watch! I’m a huge G-Shock and Casio fan and have been waiting for this to land for a while. I need HR and steps for my hiking hobby and paired with the life log this is perfect. I am still getting to grips with all the functions but so far I’m impressed. Two things that are frustrating but I’m sure will improve with updates are the GPS over exaggerates the mileage by quite a lot! and maps do not always load on the completed activity, which is annoying but not a deal breaker (if I am doing something wrong, my apologies!)Overall though this is an important part of my G-Shock square collection.

G-Shock smart watch with very few negatives
4 July 2023

Overall this is a very good watch!Positives:-Comfort: there are lots of holes on the strap to get the perfect fit, the material is soft and feels good.-Face: MIP display is very visible at any angle, looks very crisp and clear.-Style: class square G-shock, nice colour accents on the face. Doesn’t look like a smart watch for those who don’t like black mirrors.-Heart rate monitor: protrudes from the watch quite a bit however this isn’t noticeable. I had concerns before I bought it but at no point have I noticed it.-Health tracking: uses Polar’s HR and tracking system for gym workouts, runs and walks. Customisable faces depending on the activity, e.g. when running you can have 4 faces each showing 2 pieces of information like split time, pace, HR, speed etc. and ...Ā MoreOverall this is a very good watch!Positives:-Comfort: there are lots of holes on the strap to get the perfect fit, the material is soft and feels good.-Face: MIP display is very visible at any angle, looks very crisp and clear.-Style: class square G-shock, nice colour accents on the face. Customisable faces depending on the activity, e.g. when running you can have 4 faces each showing 2 pieces of information like split time, pace, HR, speed etc. and you cycle through these using the mode button. Polar have a great Nightly Recharge feature that gives you a description of your sleep with nervous system status and a suggestion for how to approach your day.-Battery: with the phone notifications off and HR monitoring on all day I’m getting about 4 days out of the watch before it needs recharging.-Customisability: three watch face options for every day viewing, multiple watch face combinations for during activity, customisable menus (be wary of those saying it takes a while to scroll through the watch menus, you can change the order and remove menu items which greatly speeds this up), you can choose to have HR monitoring on all the time, just at night, or at night and activity timeNegatives:-Connectivity: doesn’t yet sync with third party fitness or health apps. I manually enter my data onto the Apple Health app so it can be compared with my other health monitoring apps.-Battery saving options: I would benefit from an option to enter airplane mode quickly as I only connect to the G-Shock app once a day to sync my life and activity logs. During the day I don’t need my watch connected to my phone.Things to note:-Smart phone notifications can show on the screen of the watch, I don’t find this beneficial as my phone is usually readily available to view, so I haven’t commented on this feature

Good looking watch. Below average function
30 December 2023

Asthetically the watch looks amazing, but if you are looking for a fitness watch, look elsewhere. The only thing going for this watch is the display if you are a fan favorite of the sqaure GW5600 series. The processing power is slow, and the buttons are hard to press since they don't petrude out enough. I wear this based on pure appearance with basic time/date functionality but not for fitness which I rather use my Garmin Fenix watch for that.

Great watch…..best of both….however….
2 June 2023

The watch has been great to use and accurate. However, even with phone notifications switched off, the battery life is still 3 days. This is with only 3 runs a week. The data gathered is meaningful and accurate. However, this does not connect with apple health data so your steps without your iPhone are not counted. This functionality would make a huge difference.I am a keen runner and do various workouts 6 days a week, but this watch only has four activities that can be recorded. The aesthetic of this watch is fantastic, however I shouldn’t have paid a little extra and got the Garmin solar instinct 2s because it is fully solar and a few more activities that can be recorded.

King of the G-Shock Squares
23 October 2019

This should be the only G-Shock Square you should ever need to own. Obviously watch collectors would disagree as there are other stylish G-Shock Squares like the GW-S5600 even down to the average joe GW-M5610. However, this is the king and it is designed to be worn, all the time! Casio have given it a more comfortable, softer strap (it is not genuine rubber as some would have you believe but merely a softer synthetic than the normal ones) which may or may not affect its durability; I guess we'll have to see. It's also important to note that the module itself is housed in a steel case with a DLC steel screw- down case-back basically making it bomb proof. It's also important to note that the module itself is housed in a steel case with a DLC steel screw- down case-back basically making it bomb proof. The case is then embedded in the normal resin/plastic watch body. The normal ones use a plastic casing into which a a screw plate is attached using four screws. This is also then embedded into the normal watch body as above. This makes the watch heavier and slightly thicker than the others however it's more of a nod to how G-Shocks used to be made. Personally I would have no problem with a entirely plastic case (even the case back) if it meant making it lighter and thinner. However, this still feels great on the wrist and worth its weight for sure! I also want to point out that the buttons are NOT nearly as stiff and difficultto push as other reviews have made out. This may be a revision Casio have made to the button springs in the later models of these GW-5000s or maybe I was just expecting them to be a lot stiffer than they were. Lastly, the neutral colour (or lack thereof) of this model is absolutely stunning. I can't quite explain it but the understated, symmetrical look is just pure class. There is nothing trying to jump out at you (some can't stand that red line of the GW-M5610 for example even if it is a nod to the original) but rather it wants to be stealthy, even if it is a tad thicker and heavier. In fact, the only colour you may see is a shimmer of purple when the solar cells catch the light at an angle. I think it's beautiful. Whether or not you're willing to pay a premium for all this is up to you but hey, that's the price it goes for and that's that. There are much cheaper Casio models out there and I even made the mistake of buying one of those trying to convince myself I didn't want or rather, need, this one. Well, let's just say the other one is in a desk somewhere...poor thing.

Near perfect fitness/gshock hybrid but not a smart watch

Fitness functions require some getting used to relative to other smart watch designs.Solar is basically for clock function only, all other functions create significant power drain if used requiring frequent charging.Charging cable clip looks like something from the early 90s, basically no innovation on charging convenience. Conclusion:Near perfect fitness/gshock hybrid but this is not a smart watch and lacks almost all the conveniences of such. If you want a square gshock with a beautiful MIP display this is the current best option. All other functions are average at best.Improvements:Make this exact watch without sensor module and add tough solar. Would ideally love a square with MIP and tough solar with a temperature sensor as this is really the only information I require.

A bit thick due to heart rate and blood oxygen sensors. The user interface is pretty different to normal casio g-shocks and to be honest it was pretty annoying to say the least. Also for some reason, maybe it was just my lighting but the mip display seemed not as bright as the mip display on the g-lide gbx 100 maybe that was just the lighting condition i was in or maybe the battery needed a full charge first to get set up, however the battery did show it was full. Who knows, maybe I’m misrepresenting that aspect of the watch and the brightness level of the mip on it is perfectly fine, just thought i’d point it out as it was not what i expected and for these other reasons above including what I thought was an unjustified price tag, I did return the watch for a full ...Ā MoreA bit thick due to heart rate and blood oxygen sensors. To give a holistic review, I will say that, I did like how the watch looked and its display design also. I also thought the strap was great and comfortable too. Plus I actually like the fact that g-shock decided to make it a rechargeable watch, i honestly loved that feature and if the watch didn’t disappoint me in other areas I would have been so happy having the recharging capability. Might I add that the fact they had a recharging capability and not setting to adjust the screen brightness, is a bit odd as the two features would have gone hand in hand and added value to the watch which it deserves. Hope this helps you.
