My wife's Garmin was a number of years old and I wanted to replace it with another one that did voice commands and turn by turn instructions. We have Echo devices in our home and love them. Have the Amazon Extended Music subscription and there is no song we have not found available yet. So this looked like a real solution to the problem with a bonus. Amazon music setup was terrific and recognition was great. However, was unable to get the Garmin to take voice commands or get turn by turn directions. Bummer, right? Wife loved the music so much she decided to keep it. Well, I did some research and learned that you control the Garmin by voice through the Alexa command. I liked it so much went out and bought one for my car as well. Highly recommended.

The product is good for the size, touch screen feature and ability to update without connecting to a computer. However, there is not much option to choose when routed. While google map allow you to choose another route for cheaper toll option, Garmin will force you back to the original planned route and make it hard to pick another route option. One major flaw is while on our 6 hours drive from boston back to philadelphia, Garmin died and would not turn on after 1 hour of driving. It is a hot day about 90 degree or so. The gps was over heated and would not turn back on while i am on highnway with speed limit of 65 mph. I have to swith to my google map. Garmin gps turn back on again after an hour later when it cooled down. Very inconvenient. Defeated the purpose of having a gps system under the windshield.

Bought this unit and used it to navigate a nearly 2,000 mile round trip, so I definitely got to give it a good test. The features are great, it's easy to use and the "Up Ahead" feature is very useful. We were pulling a camper so we had it set to show truck stops, rest stations, and historic locations. The down side and the reason I gave it a three is that the routing is not too good once you're off of the highway. Many POI addresses are incorrect. The unit tried many times to turn me down dirt roads, driveways and just plain wrong roads. Once or twice can be a fluke, but at least once every time I've used it, there was a routing issue. If you followed this thing blind, it would get you in a lot of trouble. I will keep it because of its usefulness on a long highway ... MoreBought this unit and used it to navigate a nearly 2,000 mile round trip, so I definitely got to give it a good test. I also own a GPSMAP 64 with City Navigator which routes better than this unit which I find odd.

I was pleased with the Garmin DriveSmart 65. I haven't experienced the problems described in some other reviews. True, it did take a long time to initially update the software and data, over night even through a wired network connection, but this is not an ongoing issue. In use, the unit performs well. It boots up and acquires signal quickly, the directions are accurate and quickly recalculate upon diverging from the planned route, the screen is easy to read, the audio is clear, and it was easy to attach to the windshield with the included mounting pieces. So far, the suction cup has not come loose (and can be a little difficult to remove), but the weather has not been hot, so potential problems with the unit falling off cannot be entirely ruled out; fortunately, ... MoreI was pleased with the Garmin DriveSmart 65. It boots up and acquires signal quickly, the directions are accurate and quickly recalculate upon diverging from the planned route, the screen is easy to read, the audio is clear, and it was easy to attach to the windshield with the included mounting pieces. So far, the suction cup has not come loose (and can be a little difficult to remove), but the weather has not been hot, so potential problems with the unit falling off cannot be entirely ruled out; fortunately, aftermarket alternatives are easily available. It is easy to enter new addresses, but the procedure took a little while to figure out at first. A downside of the address list is that it cannot be sorted alphabetically, except perhaps by deleting and re-entering everything in alpha order, because it remains in the order the addresses were entered. When entering addresses with the unit not plugged into power, the charge lasted about an hour. The USB cable is a little disappointing, with an outdated USB 2 type B mini connection at the unit end, and the socket placement on the rear of the unit pretty much requires that the cable be plugged in before being mounted on the windshield attachment. The operating cable is about 68" long, including the cigarette lighter plug end. A shorter cable, with a USB type A plug at the other end for attaching to a PC or phone charger, is about 14" long. The outdated technology here may contribute to the long update times. One thing that surprised me was how light the unit is for its size, lighter than my rather small phone. Others have complained about the plastic construction, but this contributes to the light weight, and the light weight puts less strain on the windshield attachments. It's not at all flimsy. Finally, the unit is a little awkward to store or transport because the mounting components do not fold flat.Given updated USB technology, a clearer user interface for entering addresses, a sortable address list, and more compact attachment pieces, the unit would support a 5-star rating. For the same price, of course.
First of all this GPS is not intuitive at all. Navigating through it's menus can be confusing. Garmin still uses a Mini-B usb interface which is outdated, a usb-c would have been a better choice. My daughter lives in a two year old shore community in S. Carolina and her street of residence is not in their map software. Yes Garmin, I updated to the latest version of software. Her address is easily found when I use Waze and Google maps. Shame on you Garmin, you're probably the best GPS manufacturer in the world but your software is not up to par. I can't find a way to disconnect the phone from the Garmin device without turning off Bluetooth on my phone. I don't want to disconnect Bluetooth because Bluetooth is required for traffic updates. I was forced to buy a new Garmin GPS when my older Garmin nüvi no longer works because it is no longer supported. I hate that. A product should be serviced in perpetuity in my opinion. This particular model when I got it worked worst in my much less expensive Nuvi. The biggest problem I had was it didn't keep track of the proper position of the car. I would be sitting at the front of the intersection and the Garmin will tell me I still have anywhere from 200 to 500 feet to go. Even when I turned on the street before it changed the view on the carmen I would still be as much as 60 feet away according to this unit. This made it very confusing and hard to travel around as I would have to guess whether the turn i'm being asked to make is the correct one. when called ... MoreI was forced to buy a new Garmin GPS when my older Garmin nüvi no longer works because it is no longer supported. I finally settle down and have them exchange my Garman for another one. I am hoping this one works better.
This is a large GPS with a clearer screen than older units. There is a place to add a micro SD to add storage which Garmin suggests not exceed 32 GB. There is not much storage so it is worth adding. The inability to save addresses in advance unless using Trip Planner is odd. It can be a bit challenging to pair the device. Map updates are included but Garmin no longer mentions that. The battery life is a poor at 1 hour so it’s probably best only to use it when plugged in. On sale or price matched it is good value. I probably would not have paid full price. Garmin still does GPS best. Wish it included a sleeve for the unit itself. The accessories add up. Just ordered an old Garmin bag to see if it will fit the unit, friction mount and charger. This is my first Garmin navigational device. It took a few tries to figure out how it wanted the addresses inputted and I’m not sure what satellites Garmin uses.In the beginning, I inputted places I really didn’t need a GPS for and it didn’t really take me on the most direct or convenient route. So, I’m still not sure it’s reasoning since the voice output or display doesn’t explain. Maybe I’m not filtering the device correctly or something.Overall, I’m not super impressed with this Garmin Drive Smart 65, the software seems a bit antiquated, but having the device is safer than having to look at my phone for directions. The USB charging cable is ridiculously short, so I had to invest in a longer mini USB cord.I’m still not sure if the car plug-in cord actually ... MoreThis is my first Garmin navigational device. It took a few tries to figure out how it wanted the addresses inputted and I’m not sure what satellites Garmin uses.In the beginning, I inputted places I really didn’t need a GPS for and it didn’t really take me on the most direct or convenient route. My last Garmin was getting old and having some problems, so it was time for an update. This Garmin 65 is bigger (2 inches diagonally) than my older Garmin, which makes the details and print just a little bigger, and that really makes it easy to quickly see where I need to go. Love the voice input! Garmin recognizes my words exceptionally well. I just say, "OK Garmin," and she asks me what I want to do. I say, "Saved Places," or I say, "Go home." If it's saved places, then I say the name of the place. Then she says, "Do you want to Navigate to...(the place)" and I say, "Yes." This makes changing your destination so much safer! I know I've clicked on the promise to refrain from using Garmin while driving, but honestly I've done it many times. If you download the app, and turn on Bluetooth on your phone, you will get highly accurate traffic updates, which I love. My only concern is that the unit tends to get very warm when being used while plugged in. I highly recommend this, it's the best Garmin yet.
I haven’t tested all the features, but it is way better than my 8-ish year old Nuvi GPS I had with a smaller screen. Tried it out for a complicated route criss crossing Michigan the other day and was blown away by how much easier to use this unit is. Better touch screen, bigger screen, brighter screen, better voice control, better navigation aids, voice control, stand alone updates without a computer, etc. I like that the user guide is built into the unit along with Trip Advisor ratings. Did everything I needed and then some. And in case any commercial drivers are wondering, it does NOT have the special features needed for commercial truck drivers. You need one of Garmin’s dēzl products for that. My quick speaker phone test didn’t go so well, had volume control ... MoreI haven’t tested all the features, but it is way better than my 8-ish year old Nuvi GPS I had with a smaller screen.
