A Fantastic GPS!

I previously owned a Garmin Nuvi 50LM. It was a wonderful GPS that served me for over 12 years with no problems. Recently, I upgraded to a Garmin Smart Drive 76. The new features and operation of this 76 are better than I could imagine. Alexa, the Garmin Drive app, the voice commands, the bigger screen, the route planning feature, the pairing with my smartphone, etc., etc. make driving a wonderful experience. I highly recommend this GPS to anyone looking to travel to any new and unfamiliar destination with confidence.

I like the new features that it comes with. It does not always take the shortest route to your destination. Once it took me right past my destination. It would be nice if there were more map theme selections. The maps from the NUVI 255W or NUVI 50LM have much better colours and secondary roads are highlighted.

Compared to my previous GPS it is much improved. It is easier to set up. I like the option that the updates can be done through the WiFi connection rather than my computer. The sound, directives and warnings are much more easier and clear to understand. The maps and. Illustrations are clear and can be view even in bright sunlight.Time, distance and estimated time of arrival are reasonably accurate.Over all I am not hesitant to recommend this model.

Why would a STANDALONE MAPPER ... REQUIRE A PHONE?
14 December 2022

I bought the DriveSmart 76 because I wanted a standalone mapper ... because I don't want a smart phone with me wherever I go ..duh. The DriveSmart series CANNOT pair and connect with your vehicle and REQUIRES a smart phone and Garmin app else you CANNOT use the vehicle's speakers. Brainy idea for those of us that are hard of hearing. To top it off, on my first trial trip, it didn't know about a required left turn at 4 miles from the house and had you going straight, e.g. getting lost, never mentioned the stop sign either. At the next stop sign, Garmin called it a traffic signal (?). It got lost in Bonners Ferry, Idaho? What would happen in a real city? And with the fully-charged Garmin, it reported Low Battery at 5 miles into the trip ... it HAS to be plugged in to ... MoreI bought the DriveSmart 76 because I wanted a standalone mapper ... because I don't want a smart phone with me wherever I go ..duh. Sorry, but this product is loaded with poor judgement ... strongly do NOT recommend it. Garmin needs a lot more competition out there.

[Rewarded Review] Absolutely Love the Bigger Screen!
24 May 2024

I believe Garmin is the best choice I could make. I have an older smaller Garmin that I have had for years and decided to get a bigger viewing screen and this does not disappoint. I love all the features that this Garmin DriveSmart 76 has. It took no time to set this up and the newer features are a pleasant and thrilling surprise. I very highly recommend not just the Garmin name, but especially this particular model that I have had for about a month now. It is so easy to navigate with all the bells and whistles! I did add a screen protector especially made for this particular device that eliminates any glare that I might encounter on my travels.

[Rewarded Review] DriveSmart 76 great/Best Buy description incorrect
3 January 2022

Correction to Best Buy's description; the Garmin DriveSmart 76 screen is 7", not 6" as stated. Best Buy's login verification option "text to phone; we just need to know it's you" turned out to be a password reset process?Rating is marked down from 5 to a 4 for cumbersome access and adding entries to Saved Places. Other than that, Garmin's menu is intuitive and ease to navigate through with the majority of screens needed able to be accessed via the OK Google command. Thankfully, Garmin devices still allow menu access by passengers while the vehicle is in motion.(Navigation Shortcut: Once clicked through several screens, it is usually faster to return to the Home screen or Map by longpressing the back button than it is pressing Back multiple times.)The display is ... MoreCorrection to Best Buy's description; the Garmin DriveSmart 76 screen is 7", not 6" as stated. Thankfully, Garmin devices still allow menu access by passengers while the vehicle is in motion.(Navigation Shortcut: Once clicked through several screens, it is usually faster to return to the Home screen or Map by longpressing the back button than it is pressing Back multiple times.)The display is crisp, clear and brightness is adjustable. Accessing the Sound Mixer gives access to separate control and adjust volume of phone, media and navigation sound. While driving, and handsfree, you have the choice of saying "OK Garmin" for immediate navigation or "Alexa" to waken that feature. There are plenty of other online references indicating all you can do with Alexa, but having it as part of your navigation device is something I think many will find benefit in. Any requests for locations also allows for navigating to them; so in many cases you can simply use Alexa for most instead going through Garmin. Connection to home WiFi is a welcome feature that makes software and map updates an easy process. Bring the device inside and plug into a wall or connect to Garmin Express. Back up your device using Garmin Express often in the event you upgrade devices or you have issues.__________________________Having an issue with your GPS? Don't struggle or get frustrated. Map issues can generally be cleared up by connecting to Garmin Express and downloading a new map. For all other issues with the GPS itself; go to Settings > Device > Reset. After the GPS has restarted, connect to Garmin Express and select a recent backup to restore everything.__________________________Accessing your Saved Places to add a new location does not offer a "New" place or location button. First, click on "Where Do You Want To Go?", type your location in search then click on it to access the "Information" button, or click into Recently Found and select an entry to access it's Information button from where you can then save it to your Saved Places list.I sold a DriveSmart 65 to buy another "65" model having Alexa, but discovered Garmin had released this model so purchased it instead. Preferring not to connect to the phone for anything but navigation, information and media; I disable access to contacts, calls and messages. No issues to report thus far.

Great new Garmin. Replacing an ancient unit. Prefer a dedicated GPS rather than CarPlay. When there’s no cell signal, you’re stuck. Satellite signals are better. Would have gotten the 86, but if I read the info correctly, the mounting ball is now a new size. Why would Garmin have changed a very old, perfectly fine standard that works with a zillion accessories?

You need to be outside to connect to satellite in order to update and set up the unit. Instructions do not tell you this. You have to set up your home address in order to orientate the unit to where you live. This is bad as someone using your device will know where you live. It has difficulty in locating addresses you input. Both operating system and maps need to be updated. It does a good job routing you, once you get it set up. There is virtually no battery storage to operate it when not connected to a power source.

[Rewarded Review] Gave Worthless Directions
12 January 2024

Started out by not being able to locate the address of my destination. Then is said that the major highway that runs north to south on the east coast was "closed". It was not. Then it tried to send me 2 hours out of my way as a detour. Eventually, it took me off major roads and dumped me in a bad part of New York City where I was lost for hours after dark. A nightmare for an old wo man traveling alone. If you can't trust it's directions, what good is it?

[Rewarded Review] Good, but not great.
26 July 2024

When functioning properly, it's a great asset to have. Furnishes a wealth of travel information and guidance. The only glitch is it oftentimes takes an overly-long time to "acquire satellites." Ten minutes or more. Very disappointing. Suppose I had very high expectations.
