So, I looked into Garmin, was almost set to buy a 1030, when I noticed the 1040 solar was out. A little more looking and a strong reco from a guy I used to ride with in the 90's and reconnected with on RAW, and I was pretty sure the 1040 was the way to go. Upon using it for a few rides now, I feel like the interface is very similar to using any touch screen device. Very contrary to a hiking Garmin I bought back in 2015 - another story in frustration altogether. But the interface on the 1040 was simple and works. Swiping left or right, down, etc. to reveal different screens was easy. We joined a bike club, pinned a few rides on Ride with GPS from their club page and they seamlessly connected with Garmin Connect and appeared on my 1040. Simple. Pick a ride, start a ride, all the sensors reporting in - cadence, heart rate, speed - awesome. I adjusted some of the data screens - also very easy since there are easy to follow Garmin help pages online or youtube videos that walk you thru anything you want to do. So now I have modified the data on screens I want to use, can operate this thing right out of the box without mods FYI, have the radar connected and reporting in "car back" essentially all the time. Super awesome. The screen is VERY readable in all lighting conditions. And to put icing on the cake, it automatically sends ride beacons to my contacts on start and automatically syncs my rides to Strava on completion! Highly Highly recommend. Pricey - but does everything I could ever imagine, and look forward to getting more into training rides and plans. So much functionality yet to discover.

Due to this experience I was a bit skeptical of getting another Garmin, but finally after a lot of research I opted for the Solar. I'm very happy with it so far. Much easier to program the screens, the battery life especially, is outstanding. My favorite thing is seeing a depiction of the route I'm about to ride on the opening screen, I no longer have to scroll through the lists of saved courses to find and select the right ride. The one piece that is missing, and why at one point I considered the Hammerhead very strongly, is the ability to see the profile of a climb when you're not following a preselected route. I would also have like a stronger indication of the next turn, on our night gravel rides it's a bit hard to see what's coming up because the text and the direction arrow is rather small. Generally I'm delighted with the new unit, and it seems like the integration with the Connect app is much better. I often had to restart the 1030 over and over again, turn bluetooth on and off on the phone and endure a lot of frustration trying to get it to synch. The App sees the 1040 almost immediately which is much better. All in all, so far, a great product.

The Garmin Customer Support rep was absolutely awesome; he helped me through the process, and then we tested all the integration across devices and platforms. Once I understood the difference between Glances and Widgets on the Edge, I added a Widget screen for the In-Reach Mini2 so now I can operate the Mini2 through the Edge provided the Mini2 is turned on. This works seamlessly! Although I wish there was a single cycling specific computer with In-Reach capability, the combination of both units works well. The Edge 1040 is very capable, although I don't use all the power and training functions. The screen is sharp, and it's easy to swipe pages from stats to map to profile to etc. All these pages (glances?) are customizable (data fields/screen). I'm quite pleased.Suggestion for Garmin: please include 2 inserts and 2 mounts in the Bundle package so that the unit can be installed on at least 2 bikes. Also, the rubber protector should also come with the bundle, and not require a separate cost and order.Cool stuff, and it's now much safer to ride off grid.

First GPS Bicycle Computer - So far so good!

I have been biking/touring for 10 years, and have used a simple speed/odometer computer and maps to navigate. I finally decided to enter the 21st Century and get a GPS computer. I spent a lot of time researching devices from Wahoo, Hammerhead and Garmin before I made the decision to buy the Edge 1040. The extensive sets of detailed maps, advanced navigation capabilities, multi-band GNSS and best-in-class battery life were the deciding factors.I had read the on-line manual, reviews and forums before the 1040 arrived, so I was familiar with how to set up the data screens to my preferences. The information is large enough to easily read, and I can scroll left or right to get all the information I need. The map, elevation and ClimbPro screens are great, and I have added data windows to make them even better.I added Garmin speed sensors to my two bikes (CAAD10 and Surly LHT), gave them different names, and have had no issues connecting with the sensors. I have manually calibrated the wheel circumferences to mileage markers on a bike trail, and both sensors give accurate distances (within 0.15%). I have to remember to select the correct bike in GC Gear so that the mileage is applied to the bike I used.I liked the out-front mount that came with the 1040, and am using it on the CAAD10. For the LHT, I need to use a stem mount. I did not like the stem mount that uses rubber bands. I have replaced it with a K-Edge Boost stem mount, which works very well on the LHT angled stem.To get the latest software updates, I signed up for the Beta Software Program. I have had no issues with the updates so far (currently at 15.22).I use RideWithGPS to create routes. The setup to synch RWGPS routes to the 1040 was straightforward. I can create or edit a course in RWGPS, pin the new course or unpin/pin the edited course, synch my iPhone GC app with the 1040, and the new/edited courses immediately show up on the 1040.There are so many features on the 1040 that I am not using (heart rate, power, indoor trainer, etc.). I doubt if I ever use them, but the features that I am using have been fantastic. Glad I made the purchase!

I purchased this and I'm disappointed.
21 July 2022

I purchased the Edge 1040 Solar and it's got loads of problems. The Navigation looks better post track, but it's off on the road. It's not even close to pre-populated routes, misses turn queues all the time, etc. So you've got to stare at the map the whole time or you're gonna miss turns. There's also a serious problem around % Grade. The Edge 1040 averages the grade over at least 1000-2000 feet of distance. So you'll be halfway up a hill before it reflects a change in grade. Or you'll be 1000-2000 feet up a long shallow grade before it registers on the Edge 1040. Likewise you'll be on the top of a hill and the Edge 1040 will say that you're still on an 8% grade. I contacted support about this and the feedback I got says that this isn't a priority and may not be fixed 'until a future version of Edge'. So if you've used previous generations like the Edge 1000, don't upgrade. Using the 1040 for training won't help you. It'll actually hurt your performance on hills and climbs if you ever relied on knowing the grade to trim your power output to the terrain. I'll add that the Climb screen is interesting but without an accurate real time grade being displayed it is literally a useless graphic that tells you what the grade WAS 2000 feet ago as you struggle up a 14% climb. If support has you replace it, beware that all the rides you've done, all the custom screens, all the routes, everything you've done on your Edge 1040, will be lost. There's no transfer of any of that. If you don't need the battery life from this thing, skip it. None of the reviewers or youtube influencers who reviewed this device cover these issues. Also they don't publish the MAC address of the device anywhere in the setup section so you can't secure your WiFi network without an air sniffer to sus that out on your own. This product is a fail.

More Information Equals a Safer Ride

As a cyclist in East Montgomery, AL, I’m always looking for ways to make my rides safer. That’s why I was so excited to get my Edge 1040. It provides me with an abundance of information that helps me make my rides safer and more enjoyable. The map feature gives me an updated view of the roads I ride on. This is especially helpful when I’m unfamiliar with an area or if I’m riding in unfamiliar terrain (I moved to Alabama to work on an Air Force Base there). Knowing where I’m going and being able to plan my route ahead of time can make a huge difference in my safety.I’ve also programmed alerts for hydration and fuel. Having this information always at my fingertips helps me stay on top of my hydration and fuel needs so I can stay safe and comfortable on my ride. Finally, I’ve attached a versa taillight to my bike computer. This allows me to be warned well in advance of a car approaching from the rear. This is especially helpful on long rides, and I’ve found that it gives me added peace of mind as I’m out on the road. Overall, my Edge has been a great asset in making my rides safer and more enjoyable. Having more information helps me plan my rides better, take the necessary precautions to stay hydrated and fueled, and to be warned of approaching vehicles. If you’re looking for ways to make your rides safer, get the 1040.

Nice improvement over 830
6 March 2023

I switched from an Edge 830 to this unit. Mainly I wanted the bigger screen for navigation and just larger numbers (helps my eyesight). I'm really liking it. The nav is bigger and allows me to add data field(s) to it if I want (which reduces the map space, but is something I had wanted, where if I'm using a heavy navigation route, I can stay on that screen, but still know a couple other key data points). The solar feature is cool, and definitely is allowing less charging. I would say I plug it in to charge maybe once a week, and honestly, I've yet to see the unit go below about the low 70% range! I can also just leave it near a window when not in use and it seems to get a bit of charge too (the manual says it *will* charge when turned off). This is also great confidence when going out for a really long day (i.e. those big days when you're out there say 8 hours or so), and just knowing you won't have any issue at all. I did have some concern the unit would be really big, but that hasn't turned out to be a problem at all. It is obviously bigger than an 830, but the size is still very reasonable and of no concern. Hopefully the solar addition will just become a standard feature and not add so much cost in the future. That's really my only issue at this time.

I’ve been using a Hammerhead Karoo 2 since it came out primarily for its impressive navigation function and very fast response with solutions to any issue I have had. I often do gravel rides I would be unable to do without following routes of other riders. Its major flaw however is relatively short battery life. When the 1040 solar came out the biggest selling point to me anyway is amazing battery life and that has proven to be impressive. The touch screen is easy to use even with gloves and wet. A big down side of the unit however has been its poor navigation. On the first few gravel rides I went on routes I have ridden before. Multiple times it told me to make a u-turn. I knew that to be inaccurate and kept going with it eventually agreeing and finding the route. ... MoreI’ve been using a Hammerhead Karoo 2 since it came out primarily for its impressive navigation function and very fast response with solutions to any issue I have had. A big down side of the unit however has been its poor navigation. On the first few gravel rides I went on routes I have ridden before. Multiple times it told me to make a u-turn. I knew that to be inaccurate and kept going with it eventually agreeing and finding the route. Another problem that occurred multiple times was the unit map lagging behind where I actually was causing me to miss turns and briefly being lost. It did ask if I wanted to reroute, when I push on the reroute nothing happened. I called customer support talking to two different people then changing to email correspondence. My unit is now being replaced which I’m grateful for, but I’m still not certain if my unit is bad, if I had something set up incorrectly or the 1040 as a whole has some flaws with it navigation ability. Other relatively minor issues, when I zoom in the navigation map to how I prefer it, it after a while zooms back out. I also find the glare on the screen to be off putting.

I'm not the target rider for this unit. I bought for solar feature and with UK touring in mind that's prob'ly the only technological marginal gain I could appreciate, and It replaces my Edge 810 which needs retiring after a decade of service. If that could have held on 'til a 840, or 540 was released I may have chosen one of those instead.Any road, I'll admit it needs a bit of a leap in mindset. And investment in peripherals. I don't have a power metre, or fitness watch/whoop, so most of the health stuff in Garmin Connect is useless: Resting Heart Rate, HRV, stress Score, Fitness Age - all unusable. Annoyingly if you manually set a RHR, or even if you bother to put on your HRM and do the stress score daily, that RHR does not feed into the other scores, so it ... MoreI'm not the target rider for this unit. Annoyingly if you manually set a RHR, or even if you bother to put on your HRM and do the stress score daily, that RHR does not feed into the other scores, so it defaults to take the lowest HR from my workouts which can be almost double. Also you need to keep checking you zones Power and HR as updates can wipe them. I realise this is mostly GC's UI so you can't judge the head unit for that, but it.means you have to go through and disable a lot of the stamina, climbing and workout features, to the point where I have more turned off than on. Again, it's not a slight on the hardware as much as a incompatibility with the user. If I keep this for 10 years also I may end up with a fitness watch and then toggle on a few more options, but for now it's almost justified as a investment in futureproofing.

User friendly, enhanced legible screen.

Before purchasing the Edge 1040 I was afforded the opportunity of trying out a friends Edge 1030. First ride I noticed how much easier it was to navigate with the 1030. After doing some additional research I made the decision to purchase the Edge 1040. I've been using the 1040 for about a month for indoor roller rides, outdoor road rides and gravel. The user interface provides for a more intuitive customization process. Connecting to your phone and your sensors and Garmin express seemed much earlier.I have owned the Edge 530 and 830, and while the units were good for monitoring and recording ride specific details, the Edge 1040 clearly offers a significant number of improvements, enhancements. Setting up activity profiles is a snap. The larger touch sensitive screen enables me to set up Data Screens that are specific to the kind of ride I'm doing, more data with improved legibility. Customization is a very simple process. Navigation, mapping, turn by turn directions capabilities, makes this unit a must for the avid cyclist looking for larger more legible directions. The Edge 1040 is so feature rich, that I doubt I will utilize all the features. As an example, training, and biometrics capabilities. Nice to know that the Edge 1040 has these capabilities and that if the need to monitor arises, I have the ability to use them.Bottom line, well worth the investment.
