My Edge 1030 which I've had for some years, was beginning to fail, needing constant restarts, failing to work in cold weather, sometimes the battery wouldn't last the ride, so all in all the unit was generally no longer to be relied upon. Generally I'm delighted with the new unit, and it seems like the integration with the Connect app is much better. I often had to restart the 1030 over and over again, turn bluetooth on and off on the phone and endure a lot of frustration trying to get it to synch. The App sees the 1040 almost immediately which is much better. All in all, so far, a great product.

It brought me from LA to Boston, Astoria OR to Rapid City, SD and San Francisco to Pueblo CO and hundreds of other rides in between. Many friends recommended Wahoo or Kamoot and after looking at them determined that for my riding and priorities, I preferred the Garmin ecosystem. This device lets me enjoy my ride by giving me confidence I'll always know where I am and that the battery will easily last even my longest ride without needing to recharge even after multiple day rides. I haven't yet drained the battery but I don't I expect I will.I don't like the fact that the frame needs a separately purchased rubber gasket to protect the edges. That's a design omission. I suppose it's like getting a case for your phone... But still. This is a bike computer that will be outside in the elements not sitting in a climate controlled environment. Garmin should've known better.On face value it is expensive. With advances in chip technology it still baffles me that bike computers are still nearly the price of a high end tablet. I'm still mad I couldn't resist purchasing it on principle. But I did need a replacement and I wanted something that will take me on my next decade of riding. Bottom line is I do love the unit. Just wish someone had given it to me for my birthday.

The information is large enough to easily read, and I can scroll left or right to get all the information I need. The map, elevation and ClimbPro screens are great, and I have added data windows to make them even better.I added Garmin speed sensors to my two bikes (CAAD10 and Surly LHT), gave them different names, and have had no issues connecting with the sensors. I have manually calibrated the wheel circumferences to mileage markers on a bike trail, and both sensors give accurate distances (within 0.15%). I have to remember to select the correct bike in GC Gear so that the mileage is applied to the bike I used.I liked the out-front mount that came with the 1040, and am using it on the CAAD10. For the LHT, I need to use a stem mount. I did not like the stem mount that uses rubber bands. I have replaced it with a K-Edge Boost stem mount, which works very well on the LHT angled stem.To get the latest software updates, I signed up for the Beta Software Program. I have had no issues with the updates so far (currently at 15.22).I use RideWithGPS to create routes. The setup to synch RWGPS routes to the 1040 was straightforward. I can create or edit a course in RWGPS, pin the new course or unpin/pin the edited course, synch my iPhone GC app with the 1040, and the new/edited courses immediately show up on the 1040.There are so many features on the 1040 that I am not using (heart rate, power, indoor trainer, etc.). I doubt if I ever use them, but the features that I am using have been fantastic. Glad I made the purchase!

I switched from an Edge 830 to this unit. Mainly I wanted the bigger screen for navigation and just larger numbers (helps my eyesight). I'm really liking it. The nav is bigger and allows me to add data field(s) to it if I want (which reduces the map space, but is something I had wanted, where if I'm using a heavy navigation route, I can stay on that screen, but still know a couple other key data points). The solar feature is cool, and definitely is allowing less charging. I would say I plug it in to charge maybe once a week, and honestly, I've yet to see the unit go below about the low 70% range! I can also just leave it near a window when not in use and it seems to get a bit of charge too (the manual says it *will* charge when turned off). I have had nothing but issues, and for first time when I called your technical support, the female assistant was clueless! she had no idea even how to run through the device. My device will say overheating and show a fire screen with 250 every 15 to 20 minutes when it’s not even 70 outside. I’m not sure the solar is going to actually give me any benefit. I bought for solar feature and with UK touring in mind that's prob'ly the only technological marginal gain I could appreciate, and It replaces my Edge 810 which needs retiring after a decade of service. If that could have held on 'til a 840, or 540 was released I may have chosen one of those instead.Any road, I'll admit it needs a bit of a leap in mindset. And investment in peripherals. I don't have a power metre, or fitness watch/whoop, so most of the health stuff in Garmin Connect is useless: Resting Heart Rate, HRV, stress Score, Fitness Age - all unusable. If I keep this for 10 years also I may end up with a fitness watch and then toggle on a few more options, but for now it's almost justified as a investment in futureproofing.
Before purchasing the Edge 1040 I was afforded the opportunity of trying out a friends Edge 1030. First ride I noticed how much easier it was to navigate with the 1030. After doing some additional research I made the decision to purchase the Edge 1040. I've been using the 1040 for about a month for indoor roller rides, outdoor road rides and gravel. Setting up activity profiles is a snap. The larger touch sensitive screen enables me to set up Data Screens that are specific to the kind of ride I'm doing, more data with improved legibility. Customization is a very simple process. Navigation, mapping, turn by turn directions capabilities, makes this unit a must for the avid cyclist looking for larger more legible directions.The Edge 1040 is so feature rich, that I doubt I will utilize all the features. As an example, training, and biometrics capabilities. Nice to know that the Edge 1040 has these capabilities and that if the need to monitor arises, I have the ability to use them.Bottom line, well worth the investment.
