I rate this GPS a 3.5. It is a good basic GPS and will get you there and back, I don't like the very small dashes that the track shows".........." way to small. Grabs satellites fast and hills and tree cover will not affect it. My complaint is NO owners manual included just a fast start guide and I contacted them and they don't sell/have a bound manual for me???? BUT you can spend $15.99 and shipping costs for a product DVD, do they think a buyer can figure out all features????? What happens with really complex GPS units-----get lost?

I use this for tracking and setting waypoints while fishing and duck hunting. My main reason for buying this was to be a able to back track through the swamps when it is pitch black here in Florida (I think it is the trail feature that does this). It has worked great, I also take coordinates from wrecks offshore and good hunt locations on internet maps and put them into the GPS. It is not a fancy GPS that shows terrain...but it does everything it claims. You do have the ability to rename your waypoints. I highly suggest you take a couple hours and just play with the GPS to learn all the features. Also, get the high grade batteries, they work great and last a while. I like to set the screen on low brightness to help conserve battery life.

The unit is semi-sealed against moisture with a rubber o-ring for the battery compartment. That is okay. However, this is my second one. The first one bought it when the batteries exploded inside of the seal and ate the innards. My recommendation is to keep the batteries separate except when the unit is being deployed. This is a standard variant of the recommendation to keep a sidearm unholstered except during field deployment. I am now experienced in the consequences of not heeding these recommendations on both counts.

This GPS doesn't have all the bells and whistles that higher priced units have. It doesn't have topo maps but if you are looking for a basic GPS to locate waypoints, and get you to and from them again at a low price, you will be very happy with this unit. It does the job it is intended to do very well. Very easy to use and get familiar with after a few minutes of playing around with it before you head out into the woods or water. I used this unit to save waypoints while fishing on the Great Lakes and never had a negative thing to say about it. It saves waypoints as numbers (eg. 001# but you can easily change the number to whatever name you want #eg. Ramp, Blind, Truck etc) Picks up satellites quick and stays on them. I wanted something easy to use, that I could record hunting and fishing spots of interest tome, something that could take me into the woods in the dark, and bring me back out tomy car. And it does that well.
I'm not sure how many years we've had ours, but over ten. We've used it canoeing, kayaking, but mostly hiking. My wife walks 5 to 10 miles nightly on the beach in AL during the winter months. She records her distance walking. It's been reliable and accurate.
I am 55 years old and love to hunt and fish. I spend a lot of time scouting woods that I don't know and without a reliable GPS and compass, would be lost. Say nothing about finding the game cameras that I set out. My 19 year old Garmin broke and I hate learning new. This new GPS Etrex 10 will do a dance around the old one. It is fast to get signal and easy to use. Thanks
Ii bought my etrex last year. Got familiar with operation. Got turned around this week 2 miles back in woods. Brought me out back to the trail i went in on. Handy to have in back pack. If I can run one these things anyone can.
Bought this specifically for the Bright Angel Trail at the Grand Canyon and was very disappointed to see it added about 50% to all distances.1.5 Mile resthouse was showing as 2.6 miles on the Garmin, 2.5 Mile resthouse was at 4.5 and Indian Garden which is 4.5 miles on every trail guide showed as 7.6 on this Garmin despite a total reset and 5-6 satellites showing most of the time. When I asked Garmin they said to turn on the Glonas and WAAS option to improve accuracy, but off by 50%, come on! I guess I will keep it for other hikes.
I only need this for waypoints and routes on the ocean or in the mountains. It does all that in spades. The learning curve leaves something to be desired though. Long ago I learned my Garmin 12 in days. The eTrex 10 is going to take much more time to learn. Its format is not an easy one. I suggest googling "eTrex 10 tutorials" online in order to shorten the learning curve. Then you'll have a basic, mapless GPS that's one of the best on the market.
