Bare Bones Hiking GPS

Seems to work good. This is a bare bones GPS which is good for me since I am not computer savvy. I pretty much use it only to get my coordinates to reference a paper 1:24,000 USGS map. It also draws a line on the screen to show you the route you walked and tracks the distance that you walked. With the line drawn that you walked you can always get back to your starting point. These are the only functions that I really want and the cheaper ETREX 10 is good enough for me. I am a bit worried about the durability. I also have a ETREX 20 which has greater capabilities as far as loading in USGS 1:24,000 maps. But that GPS unit has a broken selector button with regard to the zoom function. I sent that one back and they charge $90 to fix or replace. The ETREX 10 cost $90. Although the GARMIN units are supposed to be user friendly and intuitive to down load software maps, I have a difficult time doing so on the ETREX 20. Also, I purchased the DVD of 4 states form Garmin for $100. Once you load a map on a GPS unit, you can not load it on another unit with a different serial number. You need to buy another $100 DVD. I guess this is how Garmin makes money. As far as durability I will have to make a report in a couple of years orso.

Unit arrived very quickly. Great service. Product navigation is similar to my old etrex H however the the toggle selection on the front is new and convenient. Takes some practice to get its operation correct but worth it. User manual both supplied and online very average in clarity. Took some time to perfect the track back option (old etrex terminology) and there is no reference to being able to use the compass heading to make this feature work better. Many features that you can get on your phone (providing there is coverage) that l probably never use in the bush. Cannot see a need to navigate to a street address when in the bush. Overall a good unit that hopefully will perform for years like my still functioning etrex h

The unit is semi-sealed against moisture with a rubber o-ring for the battery compartment. That is okay. However, this is my second one. The first one bought it when the batteries exploded inside of the seal and ate the innards. My recommendation is to keep the batteries separate except when the unit is being deployed. This is a standard variant of the recommendation to keep a sidearm unholstered except during field deployment. I am now experienced in the consequences of not heeding these recommendations on both counts.

Good little gps unit
17 April 2017

I bought this to geotag photos that i take on my dlsr. It comes with a worldwide base map (very basic) that will give me the coordinates where my photos were taken anywhere in the world. It comes with more memory then other models and expandable memory too for more maps, which i haven't tried yet. The gps seems to find satellites pretty quick, which is handy when you have it turned off and need to quickly turn on and take a photo. The gps track log is easy enough to import to my pc and run through with the photos in adobe light room. So it does exactly what i bought it for and im very happy with it I was surprised with the size of the gps. The unit is quite small, like the size of an old nokia mobile telephone. Which means the screens small which some people might find hard to see. But on the plus side it fits in your pants pocket or small spaces in bags and such Its quite heavy on the batteries though, especially if you leave it on the map view instead of the menu for some reason. So make sure you carry plenty of spares and consider turning off while stationary eg sleep, reading a book etc The toggle stick takes a bit of getting used to as i found that i would push down to the next option while trying to select using the centre click. There's also no form of screen lock as far as i can see, so i often find it doing stuff while in my pocket. To fix this issue you apparently have to buy a case for the unit that sits higher then the joystick, which is meant to stop accidental bumps

Great Product. Can do 99% of the things 95% of users would require.

Great product, lightweight, long battery life, compact size, solid construction. If you are a user who wants a fragile touch screen and hardly used features, this unit is not for you. If you want a good quality handheld GPS that does exactly that and basic mapping as well. This device fills that role very well. And 20+ hours of battery life.

Great product once you get the hang of it.

I upgraded from an eTrex 10 a week ago after having used the base model for 5 years. What I needed was the map facility. However, I think I may have been expecting too much from the eTrex 22x initially. Planning a route on BaseCamp and uploading it to the GPS was what I wanted to do, but this has turned out to be a nightmare. Firstly, BaseCamp is junk; it simply is not fit for purpose. It's clunky, takes around 15 minutes to load and connect to the GPS, and constantly goes into unresponsive mode. I uninstalled and reinstalled the software more than three times with the same result. You really are on your own with this; I resorted to countless youtube videos but without much success. You really are on your own with this; I resorted to countless youtube videos but without much success. I have now given up on using BaseCamp entirely and plan my routes and tracks exclusively on the hand held GPS. This may be slow but it works fantastically. I am now more enthusiastic about this device and consider it a worthy upgrade from the base model. In fact, just about the only difference between the two are the maps that come with the 22x. And the colour screen, of course. So now that I have tempered my expectations somewhat, I am enjoying the eTrex 22x. I just don't know why in this day and age Garmin have neglected to modernise and upgrade BaseCamp. This is a pity because the idea of paring the GPS with a software package on the computer is a terrific one. That's the theory, but not the reality.

Great value, handy GPS unit
10 February 2023

Good improvement over the eTrex 10, much improved memory size, colour display and good battery life in a compact and very reasonably priced unit. Essentially the same user interface as the eTrex 10, a bit harder to read as the text is smaller. Doesn't have MGA2020 but that's not a big drawback. A very handy little unit when you don't want to be lugging around anything bulky.

No, seriously, Garmin Etrex 10 is an remarkable GPS device! Just look: a new high-sensitivity receiver with GLONASS support, low-power but high-performance processor, efficient sealing rubber - and all this features at a price comparable to noname car devixes! But an epic fail of Garmin Etrex 10 is a few storage capacity. It seems unclear: today, when a flash memory costs even a dime, why the manufacturer have installed only 8MB of internal memory or simply have not provided a slot for SD card? It is no wonder that the manufacturer, widely advertising useless basemap, insolently states that custom maps could not be downloaded in Garmin Etrex 10! Nevertheless, loading topo map in a vector IMG format to Garmin Etrex 10 is not easy, but very easy! Simply connect your GPS device to your computer in "Mass Storage" USB Mode and just replace the file of the base map gmapbmap.img by a topo map file with the same name. Only what we shall download? Detailed topo maps of a whole state have a size of tens of megabytes! However, for most users - fishermen, backpackers and geocachers the whole area is not immediately needed. On my site http://etrex10.ru/en/ you will find a set of topo maps and graphical interface for downloading into your device. Maps are good detailed and their elements are optimized for the monochrome display of Garmin Etrex 10. And all this maps are free. Pros: Good value, lightweight, 25-hour battery life, reliable push buttons, bright display. Cons: Small screen, no color, no electronic compass, buttons are harder to push than 62 series, less accurate than Oregon and 62 series

YO THIS THING IS AMAZING! We ended up getting stranded on the other side of a raging river in the wilderness to where our car was, and this little dude was SO DETAILED and accurate that we were able to find an adequately shallow part of the river to cross WITH JUST THIS GPS!!! It's insane, and genuinely saved our bums on this trip. 10/10 big recommend
