I just bought a Garmin Fenix 5X, mainly for the golf feature and the GPS feature. I thought the GPS would be handy if walking in an area you don't know well. Wow, has it got a heap more it can do that I reckon I can use. The menu system was at first a bit confusing but after a few days, I now find I can navigate it okay. The fact it is waterproof to a 100 metres was another big selling point for me. I have had other fitness watches that I have dove into the pool with or jumped into the shower with and that has destroyed them. The battery life is really good unless you are using the high power usage GPS which then drops the operating time down quite a lot. Often before getting the watch, people would ask me how far I went when I did my activities and I never really knew but would give them what I would call a mental estimate. Now I know! And, while doing my activities, I can monitor my elevation changes and pulse in real time. I have to say that I find having the kind of information the watch delivers a very positive motivator for being active and I never would have expected that.Another nice feature is having the GPS map right on my wrist. Often I will hike or mountain bike into areas I am not familiar with. (The GPS map even includes many local trail names that are not on my Oregon 450 GPS with Canada TOPO map.) Having the map allows me to see at a glance where my wanderings have taken me relative to trails and as my route is constantly tracked, I can easily see if there are shortcuts to "get home" when the daylight is beginning to run out or I'm getting hungry! Likewise if I am ocean paddling and the fog comes in, I have my route out right on my wrist and I can follow it backwards to get safely back home.I have not had the watch long enough to make much use of all of the parameters regarding training and physiology that it tracks that get downloaded to Garmin Connect on a smart phone (which I don't own) or computer. I am sure that I will never really scratch the surface in that department, however just the simple day to day information that I get from the Fenix 5X is impressive, and it gives me self satisfaction that I can see it at a glance. Who doesn't want to know that the activity they just did burned off 1057 calories!For me, one of the highlights of the Garmin Connect is that the download shows what you have done. As an example, for a hike, some of the things shown are a map of your route and it gives metrics along the way including elevation, pace, heart rate, and temperature (not sure how accurate this is based on the fact that the watch is often covered during winter), calories burned, distance travelled, Aerobic and Anerobic Training Effects, steps per minute (average and maximum), speed (average and maximum) and of course elapsed time.I don't know how long it will run on a charge and from what I have read, that depends on what you are using it for. Use of the GPS function will use up battery much faster than if it is just being used as a watch for example. I do find that as I am active every day or so, I connect it to my computer through the USB cable supplied with the watch and when that it connected the watch charges up quite quickly.So as an early user, I would say that I am very surprised just how much I really like my Fenix 5X and the information that it provides! Knowing what I know now, I would strongly recommend this watch to anyone who goes in the back country or out on the water as a valuable tool - not just a gimmick! The added benefit is that getting all that information it can provide is kind of fun!

Good battery life ,last whole day for navigation . the map US ver.that comes with is good indeed without needing any look around.The app isn't so easy to navigate .Funny Itself (app) needs an navigation to get in & out something very frustration to be tie with WIFI and shopping of garmin sites!!and u need wifi to change face & update activities .Also resolution & limited color are below now most of the average smart watch standard .However ,since it is always on ,does save good battery life ,that makes up . Had a forerunner 620 and a Fitbit ionic. Wanted one watch which merged the features of both. This fit the bill and more. Fitbit was good for fitness but seemed to lack some real running features like hours of GPS usage and specific training intervals. Forerunner 620 was missing smart watch features preventing daily use. Garmin notifications turned out to be more stable than Fitbit when paired to iPhone. On sale was great deal. Only wish would be if it was thinner but features make up for bulk.
Great watch! I bought this never having a Garmin smart watch. Been west G-Shocks forever. I went with a 5x bc the new ones are crazy money and I wanted to make sure I liked them before I spent a ton. Bought his used and its great! User friendly! All I really want it for is getting notifications for phone calls, texts, emails, and Teams messages. CHECK! And tracking hikes, walks, and bike rides. CHECK. Even connects to my Strava account! Of course it does a thousand other things too. Plus is that its chunky like a gshock so you know you have something on. Looks great too!
Rugged outside with easy to use software inside. Great display and map features, accurate HR wrist sensor, quick fit bands are a real treat. Battery life is solid. Activity monitoring with phone app summary details is well developed and easy to use. Maps work well. With this being a new device, updates are key to tweaking the proformace to meet the stated abilities. Sometimes updates also create new problems. I've found my watch to work well, mostly, with some tiny bugs that will require more updates to work correctly or as intended. So patience with any new platform is part of the game, know that and you won't be disappointed.

Menu aesthetics aside, I couldn’t bridge the gap between the experience I have interacting with smartphones and tablets to the experience using this watch. Simply put, it was very frustrating to use. The screen is very low resolution, the pixels are visible squares and navigating through the menu using 4 different buttons seemed like we’ve come too far to be back at this point. Compared with the Suunto Spartan HR, I also found it quite a bit heavier. Garmin connect offered a lot of great stats but again the app’s graphics and UI seemed clunky and dated. I guess I’m waiting for some hybrid apple watch experience with Garmin exterior design and ruggedness. For athletes who are simply interested in performance data and do not care about interaction with the watch, I’m sure this works. But for folks interested in collecting the every day data and critical of a having a contemporary UI experience, this is not that watch.

I have had this a fair few weeks and it just keeps impressing me. HR monitoring seems fine, the workouts are great, and the comfort is just so much better than the vivoactive. I only take this off to charge it, which with my use is about 5 maybe 6 days, but I do about 30 to 40 minutes of exercise 3 to 4 times a week and 1 bout of an hour a week.I have paired non-garmin headphones successfully (mine are Airpods)works perfectlyDon't pay for the super expensive straps, you can get great replacement straps for a fraction of the price. If you are on the fence, just bite the bullet and get it.
Great watch. For 300 dollars. It does not worth full asking price. My biggest disappointment is that it is useless as a swimming trekker. I know that swimming and gps is a challenge. But my Suunto and amazfit stratos worked. Garmin is just not trekking at all nor detects style of swimming. However everything else is amazing. Battery life , maps, charge time, the quality of the case, hr. I was even able to download and install third party app for diving which is very accurate. Pc /phone software is very informative and flexible. if it wasn't for issues with swimming this would be a perfect sport watch. What is annoying that fenix 3 hr was doing a descent job while in water. So Garmin just made a mistake with 5x and then ignored it.
