An easy-to-use handheld GPS receiver for runabouts, sailboats or other small watercraft without a chartplotter. GPS 73 is also a great emergency navigation backup for all vessels. It has an intuitive user interface with dedicated backlit buttons for easy operation, with a high-contrast display that's easy to read in all lighting conditions. It features SailAssist, including useful sailing functions like virtual starting line, heading line, countdown timers and tack assist. GPS 73 is NMEA 0183 compatible. To transfer data to your device, it easily connects to your computer via USB cable or sends speed and position data to devices such as a chartplotter, computer, autopilot or radar, using the Power/Data Cable (sold separately). GPS 73's high-sensitivity GPS receiver quickly locks onto GPS signals and tracks your location even in challenging locations, such as deep canyons or under heavy tree cover. Mark important waypoints like a hot fishing spot or a lobster pot. You can mark and store your favorite locations (1,000 waypoints and 100 tracks) and easily navigate back to them. SailAssist helps you sail more effectively with heading line and tack assist. Tack assist lets you know when to tack based on whether your boat is getting headed or lifted compared to the boat's optimal tacking angle. For those who like to race, there's virtual starting line and countdown timer to make sure you cross the starting line at the right time. Use on land or water - it floats!

Large Display capability for Bearing and Distance for setting racing marks. Main reason for purchasing."Setting the Starting Line" is helpful when some distance from the line to let you know the time to get to the line at your present heading, but because of the lag in update and if you are going fast, you better rely on visual sites when close to the line. The "Tack Assist" works very well if you got an extra person to watch it.

After having used the 72 and 72H I thought this would be a simple unit to set up. Instead it took me a couple of phone calls to friends who were a help with it. Still wish I could set up custom screens like I was able to do with the 70H. Possibly more time with it will prove helpful.

I had this GPS naviator brought to me while overseas after my old GPS 72 stopped working. The 73 has a better display than the previous 72 model and is easier to use for entering waypoints and routes.I like the configurable displays. There is one thing that seems to be missing; there is no way to display UTC time. You can configure time zones to adjust your time to mimmick UTC but you do it by setting the time zone to Western Europe. That is a step backward from previous Garmin GPS navigators. If you are using this GPS navigator as a backup system and you need to perform position reports, e.g. to ATC or oceanic weather reports to NWS or NOAA then you will miss not having UTC.On the Satellite page of the GPS 73 you can find your GPS position, elevation and ... MoreI had this GPS naviator brought to me while overseas after my old GPS 72 stopped working. Excellent value product; my only complaint is accessing Garmin Express to register the device! So far unable to register!
Good basic piece of navigation equipment. Works well for coastal sailing (operating instructions are a little opaque but with a bit of trial and error you can work out most of the functions)
Generally easy to use and the screen is large enough to read from a distance. Mainly using it to determine the ground speed of my yacht.
I got my GPS 73 today. Took it outside and set a waypoint. Went right back to it. It works on land, water, highway. Easy to set up and use. I recommend you go on internet and download user manual. comes with quick start manual it is just the basic, Don't help to much. Also has a lot more features.
This is an accurate GPS which is relatively easy to use and is waterproof. I use it on my boat.
Very versatile with lots of features. Those I will not use can be removed from the screen. Very quick to get a position fix and easy to load waypoints.
