I use this primarily for geocaching and I am very happy with it. The only thing that needs improvement is the responsiveness of the compass. It ceases to move with regularity, coming back to life after having to wait for 20-30 seconds. This usually occurs when first selecting the compass for use while navigating. Otherwise, this is a very good unit for my needs and one of the best parts is that it comes loaded with excellent maps.

I've owned/used Garmin Nuvi, Etrex (20) and GPSMAP (62) GPS devices for 12 years now. I recently bought a GPSMAP 64CSX unit to replace my failing GPSMAP 62 through Walmart.com. The order went fast and delivery was very fast (3 days). Up to now, I've been fairly satisfied with Garmin products. When the unit arrived, I noticed the product's box was not taped closed and the opening tab was partially out, but all parts were there. Then, the not so fun part began: Right off the bat, the USB connection was intermittent. The GPS saw the computer connection but the computer did not see GPS. Secondly the cursor toggle button would not toggle up/down. Lastly the power on/off button bogged down/stuck the few times I used it to update the maps. Custom maps issue

When importing custom maps, there is no functionality allowing them to be disabled. This means that when a custom map is put on the device, no other maps are visible. The only way to see the other maps is to remove the custom map. I contacted garmin support and the workflow they suggested was for me to put the custom map on an SD card and then remove the card when I want to turn it off. That is a laughable work flow. This is major letdown as custom maps were a big part of my reason for purchasing the 65s.This is basic functionality that exists on previous models. It seems this is a bug that was overlooked by garmin on this new model.Just wanted to spread the word so others are aware of this limitation/issue.

Easy to use
11 September 2021

Great product for our 10 day pack in hunt. Was very easy to use and easy to set up. Downloaded the Colorado hunt imagery from the Garmin website and everything was working perfectly. Regular batteries don’t last long in this but could have been due to the cold soak they received at night. Used a few cheaper Garmin’s in the past and this one beats them all. The 66st I really wanted isn’t sold at Best Buy and the 66 sold out the day I was going to make the leap. Settled on this model but am happy with

Extremely difficult to use

So will this potentially help you get back on trail? Yes.Can it save you in a bind ? yes. Outside of that, all the other features are so out of date that they are useless. The interface is so dated that an old flip from phone the early 2000s would be an upgrade. Trying to learn the software to plan a trip is very cumbersome. There are ways to make a custom route, but I have to call in to customer service to even plan a two day trip to walk me through how to use this. Extremely steep learning curve on the software. You would be better off buying a GPS device that's only feature shows you a map of your location and trails close by. Do not buy this device for the features. Garmin needs to get with the times. Instead the Garmin program just skips all the points im trying to go on and shoots right to the final point. Total waste of money

Good to have.

This GPS takes a minute to get used to. it has some useful features like, leaving breadcrumbs where you have been and telling you are far to your next way point is plus telling you stats like KM/H, time stopped. The only less than good point about this unit is the maps it comes with. they are missing lots of the details that i needed for what i want to use it for (hunting the back county) you can get some good NZ made ones that have tracks, huts, and the DOC boundaries on them. The battery life seems to be good as i have left it on all day and it didn't loss one bar.

Great GPS receiver in a durable package.
2 August 2021

I've owned previous units in this line, and wasn't really planning to upgrade, but my gpsmap 64s, while still working, was starting to act a little wonky (wouldn't automatically turn on when plugged in to external power, would go blank when I'd try to mark a geocache as "found" while I was on anything but the compass screen). So far, this is the best GPS receiver I've owned. The black rubber/plastic so far seems much more durable than the 62 or the 64. And like others, I use mine primarily for geocaching, but unlike others, a simple google search told me how to display the geocaches on the map screen, which I'm reposting here to save others the trouble -1)Press Menu twice to access the Main menu2)Select Setup3)Select Map4)Select Advanced Map Setup5)Select ... MoreI've owned previous units in this line, and wasn't really planning to upgrade, but my gpsmap 64s, while still working, was starting to act a little wonky (wouldn't automatically turn on when plugged in to external power, would go blank when I'd try to mark a geocache as "found" while I was on anything but the compass screen). How did I survive before my Garmin
9 May 2023

My Gosh, went Geocaching with the assistance of my new Garmin, how fantastic. It alerts me to nearest caches, I can create lists, use it to log, navigate, previously bumbled along with just my phone, completely opened up a new way to cache. Easy to use as I'm not really a tech head, but was soon able to navigate the easy screens. Glad I bought this one not a touch screen as I feel I have more control. Would definitely recommend this device, best thing I've bought for some time!!

Inferior maps and poor interface
19 April 2023

First model I purchased, refused to boot after a short break-in. Tried to reboot to no avail. Second purchase was very hard to navigate to a destination with the push buttons. Took forever. Maps are inferior to Caltopo and Gaia with small, hard to read major road, so that you can't figure out where you are without zooming way in. Route planning is not easy. I can find any location in USA with Gaia or Caltopo in seconds and plan a route quickly--with Garmin it could take half an hour and that's being generous. Maps are not accurate either with some showing routes that are not aligned accurately and several hikes near me that aren't even shown. With Gaia or Caltopo for a small fee, you can download nice accurate maps and still have your location shown even if no cell ... MoreFirst model I purchased, refused to boot after a short break-in. Reliable and accurate workhorse

I use a GPS for bushwalking, often in dense scrub and forest, and for auditing track infrastructure, sometimes in steep terrain or under dense canopy. So signal accuracy and reliability are important. I've used a GPSmap 62sc for many years and been very satisfied with it. The 65S is identical in many respects. The main improvement is a dramatic increase in the location accuracy, particularly under canopy. While the 62 struggled to get accuracies of 10 metres under dense canopy, the 65 locks on to a nominal 1.8m and delivers accuracies of 2-3m. This is a huge advantage for inventory work where the data is used to calculate the lengths of track boardwalk for example. I also appreciate that the batteries can be replaced a big advantage on extended expeditions. ... MoreI use a GPS for bushwalking, often in dense scrub and forest, and for auditing track infrastructure, sometimes in steep terrain or under dense canopy. Possible room for improvement: it would be useful to have an easy way to replace the screen, if and when it gets scratched up in the course of heavy work in the bush.
