I've had the gpsmap 66i for two months. Ordering and delivery were very efficient. Initial setup of the unit is all done before you receive the unit. I have used it extensively both walking and mountain biking. My thoughts:Pro's: Very well built device, buttons work even with gloves on. Battery life is extremely good even in cold weather and screen on all the time. Navigation is very clear, on and off route alarms work very well. Screen is very clear in all conditions. Easy to plan routes on the gps training website and download gpx files to the device. I bought the backpack mount and the bike mount as well, both of which are well designed and very functional.Cons: it's expensive. It is quite complicated to use. I was determined to learn by trial and error and I have. Conclusion: A very well made bombproof navigation tool that will get you home safely regardless of the conditions. It is a huge reassurance knowing you have the in reach technology if things go badly wrong but you do need the subscription. Dealing with GPS training is a pleasure and you have the reassurance of the support package if you need it.

This is our second unit like this so we can buy the bigger plan and use it to text while in the neck of the woods. For that part, it's a great choice.Where things get sour is for the charging temperature. There's a sensor within the GPS which will detect temps below 0°C. (freezing point) Garmin was contacted and there is no way without modifying the unit and voiding the waranty to have it charge under 0°C. You need to keep it inside your vest to circumvent that. A snowmobile or quad mount won't work as soon as the low temp is detected. The GPS keeps on working until -20°C, but it won't charge, even when plugged in.Other than that, it sports up to 36 hours uptime in regular mode and 200 hours uptime in expedition mode. You can pair it with your phone via ... MoreThis is our second unit like this so we can buy the bigger plan and use it to text while in the neck of the woods. If you need a safety device, this one works fine. Then again, smaller models do as well.

Really pleased with GPSMAP 66i device, and with the pre and post-sales support from GPS Training.First the device. I'd been using an InReach Explorer+ for communication and an eTrex 30/30x for navigation for a couple of years. The GPSMAP 66i provides both features in a single unit without compromising either function. Unlike the Explorer+, which uses Garmin's Earthmate application for pairing with your mobile, the 66i uses Garmin's Explore application, which feels more mature/user friendly.Secondly the support from GPS Training. The product review was crucial to my purchase. I'd thought trading up from the Explorer+ and eTrex 30/30x combination was a luxury, but there are plenty of features, which made the decision simple. I bought the mini 2 originally but I wanted the 66i however I read the reviews and decided on mini 2. It works ok I wanted the maps. So on my way to Yosemite I stopped at the REI in salt lake and bought the 66i on sale (yea) anyway I had it up and running by the time we made it to our destination. It worked flawlessly it was not as difficult to setup as everyone said and it kept track of the whole trail. I sent preset msgs out with no problem. It was great because there is no cell service that I could find. And as one person said you don’t want to drop your $1000 phone in the river. So for me this product is great and I would recommend it to anyone. I would liked to test out the sos feature but that’s for another adventure. Oh I didn’t get lost once I may not have ... MoreI bought the mini 2 originally but I wanted the 66i however I read the reviews and decided on mini 2. It works ok I wanted the maps. Good unit, EXCEPT that if it's displaying the Trip Computer or Map pages and stored in pocket it can STOP recording if the Enter button is double pressed by accident. This is my third Garmin (prior etrex 30, GPSMAP 64st). One of the things I really liked about Garmin was that once recording started, it could not be stopped accidentally. Much to my surprise, on two occasions I got the end of day hikes and found the 66i had paused recording! Fortunately, they were local hikes to get acquainted with the unit. This is a big design flaw for Garmin - not fatal since one could still navigate with it, but if you did NOT download the trail track beforehand, it could be difficult to retrace your steps. The graphics are good and easy to read and the Lithium batteries last a ... MoreGood unit, EXCEPT that if it's displaying the Trip Computer or Map pages and stored in pocket it can STOP recording if the Enter button is double pressed by accident. The preloaded maps are good. I got the 66i because I was used to the relatively poor Garmin software on the 64st and know how to tailor the units to my use. The units have been well constructed and hold up well to constant use with infrequent drops and getting wet. Just make sure to do a number of test hikes before you have to rely on it.Would recommend. Rancho Palos Verdes. Age 69. Use for day hikes.
I purchased this for a 10 day trip despite the poor reviews about the interface. If you are a Gen Xer and had a flip phone the interface will make sense. It is not a smart phone, but that is for a reason. Battery life. I left it on expedition mode and only charged it once over 10 days, and that may not have been necessary. I knew my phone which I use GIA Gps would not last the 10 days. All the information is there. I suggest not just buying it and expecting to know everything. Sit down and spend a couple of hours playing with it and everything will make sense. This was invaluable on my trip. I am glad Garmin finally figured out we do not want to pay for maps. I replaced a Spot X with this. It is much better. The only thing I would change is to the quit button has ... MoreI purchased this for a 10 day trip despite the poor reviews about the interface. Like, we live in 21th century right? And Garmin also branded itself as a tech company right? Than I don't get it why they can't have software and user interface that's up to the 2022 standard. Like seriously, nowadays most of the electronic device should be able to operate without reading any kind of manual for instruction. Apple's iphone set this trend like 10 years ago. However, from mini inreach 1 to Fenix 6 and to this GPS I am still having a hard to figuring out how to use most of the function.Especially with all the different apps that garmin has. Why can't you just have 1 or 2 apps that can do everything? For the price and monthly subscription fee, hire better UX and UI designers Garmin. I would not recommend Garmin products to non tech savy people until ... MoreLike, we live in 21th century right? And Garmin also branded itself as a tech company right? I'm almost 70. The interface on this is about six months older than that. It's cumbersome and beyond unintuitive. I had the in-reach mini and loved it. I'm going back. Just trying to get rid of widgets is multiple steps. If you send locations to more than three people it will tell you there are too many characters and you have to delete some. (Not a problem on the mini). I love the larger screen to look at weather reports but frankly, looking at maps on this is a migraine in the making. Using the cursor to navigate around the map is clumsy and seems to be possessed! Being able to text with this much better than with the mini (which requires insect-sized digits). But some of them think sending you a link is a better answer than an answer. God forbid if we actually talk to the customer. Battery life is ok, but nowhere near as efficient as mini. Also, if you're spending night somewhere cold, make sure you put this in your sleeping bag or you'll lose half your battery life over night.
The satellite tracking and messaging are great. I hit the SOS button once to report a small forest fire in a part of Angeles National Forest where I was miles from a cell tower. I received a quick response from the dispatch team that handles emergencies. Now a lot of people complain that the interface is dated, etc. This is true, but there are some upsides to this, which I list below. Part of the reason I go hiking is to disconnect, so not relying on my cell phone is part of the reason I picked this unit over the inReach mini. You can send the Garmin mapshare link from the device.* Battery seems to last forever.
