This watch has features that benefit all those activities and much more. You can trigger training events on the watch. The app oddly knows what muscle groups you excersized and what motions you completed be it bench press or rows. It needs a little help with some exercises but for the most part it already knows. There are diagrams that show muscle groups you worked. It's pretty sweet and helps you identify what zones you will target the next day. It also track treadmill runs with impressive accuracy. Plus many more features. Quite an impressive watch. Only downside is, I can't see the benefit for the solar option ... I was disappointed firts emotionally, then technically. The new high-Res display does not add utility, it looked dimmer to me in low light condition. I've been a long time other smartwatch brand user and have been waiting on my last one to die and chose a Garmin Instinct 2S. I like the small size of the 2S, however the downfall is battery life. I have the pulse ox off and get 7 days battery life then it goes into battery saver mode. That's a day or two longer than my last watch and was hoping to get at least 10-14 days. With only 7 days of battery life, that is much less than half of the advertised 21 day battery life. I assume the watch needs to be in full battery saver mode to last that long.Other than the short battery life I have no issues with the watch. The features are great and I enjoy the app interface. The. I just am coming from a smaller smartwatch and wanted to try the smaller instinct 2 hoping it ... Example, will the lithium batteries last forever/be replaceable on these "smart" devices? No telling. What I can say though is that for a digital watch, especially if you are a hiker or new to running, this is FUN to use!Two things:1) This watch "smartly" allows us to add equipment to a handful of activities. Let's say I have two pairs of running shoes that I alternate. The only thing we can't easily do is "clone" an activity or add a specific additional activity so that when we run the shoes will be tied to the variant of the activity. It is just a note I wanted to mention somewhere in case someone is reading these and able to offer product suggestions up the design line.2) I enjoy my watch so much that we got another for my partner and both watches register different distances even though we track our neighborhood walk (to walk the pup) using the watch's GPS. Today my walk was something like 1 mile and my partner's Instinct 2 Solar S (the smaller one) registered something like .89 miles. Using GPS on both watches, how can they vary so much?3) I am so excited to see the data on my mobile device and also on the computer screen! How cool to hike a local state park and then see the terrain I crossed over and through, my corresponding pace, heart rate during elevation gains and on and on! I am so happy to have gotten into running recently during this time in history where a "basic digital watch" (by appearance and usability) can help me record and decipher so much information! I look forward to trekking out into the desert in Big Bend (Texas : ) and knowing confidently how much time 'till sunset, how to get back, etc. I tend to enjoy off trail hikes in the middle of nowhere more than anyone else I know and every so often I have guestimated my route back only to find that I had to retrace my steps a few times so I could pick the correct safe way back.Thanks Garmin! I upgraded to Garmin after using every single other fitness wearable -- I've had 3 fitbit, an apple watch, I even had the nike band many years ago. I LOVE my Garmin. I originally got the Forerunner 245 with Music and I was very happy with it, but I'm not a triathlete. I loved the Running Training features, but I do so many other activities -- Trail Running, Rock Climbing, Tennis, Alpine touring and of course hiking whenever I can -- that the Forerunner put me into a little running corner. I feel like the Forerunner is SO powerful for runners and triathletes! I just don't exclusively do those sports so I felt boxed in. After 30 days I returned the Forerunner and replaced it with the Instinct, which I am SO happy with! I love this watch, it is SO powerful. I love the ... When I owned my Apple Watch and it broke, I realized I was so tethered to my phone. Transitioning to Garmin assisted me into a better balance of life choosing to not have notifications sent to my wrist. I still have calls go through (because they are far and few between and usually used when an emergency is happening)Anyway, the battery life on this puppy is FANTASTIC! After a full charge it will go for 27 days without any extra features going on (GPS, activities, etc.) However, with the solar addition, when I am out and about I get a little pick me up which I love. I had ordered the Garmin Instinct 2 Solar from Best Buy as I had been experiencing some rapid battery rundown on my Garmin Instinct Solar first generation.By the time I got the new watch, I had done some settlings tweaks, including eliminating the pulse ox monitoring at night.I was hoping I could set up the new device as primarily and the first generation one as a backup or for use when doing dirty tasks such as yard work. I found it was more difficult than I thought it would be.I liked the appearance of the new light gray (almost white) but thought it might get dirtier and messed up compared to my old first generation.Bottom line, I ended up returning for refund as I didn’t think the $450 plus tax was worth it when my first generation Instinct Solar is ... I loved the weight (or lack of)! HR monitor seemed accurate while hiking but was off by 50bmp (compared to my Polar HRM with chest strap) while on my spin bike. The band is very comfortable but really small (my wrists are 7.5"). The length of the band is mentioned in the specs, had no idea that was a spec I needed to look for. (Garmin, you let people customize their watches, let us customize the length of the band as well!) My main complaint about this watch are the data fields. The ones at the very bottom are miniscule. The other "windows" are more legible, but could be bigger. Maybe make the main window smaller?? I also loved the 40mm size, not too big and can still fit under most sleeves. This Surf edition isn't solar powered like other models of the Instinct 2S are, which is disappointing but the battery (with full connectivity and all settings turned on), will get you through 10 days, with daily workouts. It's also called 'rugged' but having gone for the Waikiki lime green & aqua colour I've noticed I've already scuffed the bezel from using weights but that's all.
