Garmin Tread XL Baja Race Edition

Team tracking with built-in inReach technology lets you see the live positions of your race vehicle and chase truck in real time — and you can message each other with global satellite coverage (requires active inReach Flex Team subscription). The ultrabright 10′′ glove-friendly touchscreen is designed for high visibility, while the included Tread XL Dock allows easy push-button interaction. Import the GPX data ahead of time to view the course start/end, racetrack line, all virtual checkpoints and race mile markers. Prerunning tools let you create custom pace notes — such as “sharp turn,” “stepdown” or “danger” — to help you anticipate obstacles and navigate the most efficient route through all virtual checkpoints. Track recorder helps drivers record their performances and improve their race times by saving splits/laps. Get enhanced performance with the included external GPS antenna and external inReach antenna. Both are in low-profile, water-resistant housings and have many installation options. Tread XL works with the Garmin PowerSwitch digital switch box (sold separately) to control your vehicle's 12-volt accessories, such as rock lights, fans and air pumps. Panel mount the device directly to the dashboard, or use the included bail mount to secure. Purpose-built for all-terrain use, this Tread device stands up to desert temperatures and challenging terrain. It’s also IP67-rated for dust and water-resistance. Enjoy team tracking with unlimited SOS, text messages and more ( requires active). Downloadable high-resolution BirdsEye Direct Satellite Imagery shows vivid overhead views of your surroundings. Satellite imagery for the North Baja Peninsula comes preloaded on the device. With a paid Outdoor Maps+ subscription, you’ll get ongoing access to a wide variety of additional premium map content.

I have a new co-driver this year and he was able to play for about an hour and have it dialed. The interface is very intuitive. Light years better than Lowrance. First race is in a couple of weeks. We will see how it holds up. My pit is super excited to be able to track the car real time.

Great Features, clear screen in bright daylight.

I got this to do a Baja trip with Expeditions Offroad. It was an amazing piece of equipment. With the Bird's Eye I could predict washes in real time while navigating and we could push our speed faster and feel confident doing it. I need to brush up on more of the functions, but once we had a pre loaded map in there it was awesome.

Great Off-Grid Tracking

My goal was to find a device that could track vehicles in remote places away from cell service and WiFi. The Tread XL is just that. Whether it be for testing for Dirt Wheels Magazine or within my @cainsappetite4adventure SXS tours in the Mojave Desert, we are now safer and more productive for using it. We have constant contact with the support crew at all times.

Horrible refresh and tracking like always.

As always garmin behind the performance curve again. Sad when a iPad runs 10x faster and is more accurate. Boxed up after 2 hours, returned the next day. Had hopes for a new, good looking fast product. It’s not this. Slow to register and track. Very annoying. iPad still blows it away.

I have two of the tread Baja Race editions, I would to connect with the developers to offer insight as to where I feel they could make great improvements. The units themselves are amazing, I was told by many before buying for our race team that it was new technology and they wouldn't trust it. Bottom line is Garmin is an amazing company that produces top of the lime GPS products and has for decades. The In-Reach side of things for tracking is not new either, it has been in use for many years by search and rescue, and many other outdoor industries. This product merely combined the two to make an amazing new product. The tablet feature, chase mounts, external antennas, the race mount, and web connected services are all top notch. The satellite imaging is great for being able to look at your surroundings and see where you are in relation to landmarks, or a better trail just a few hundred yards away. The ability to track the teams in real time is a game changer. I was able to track my vehicles location and know exactly where the chase vehicles were as well. There are a couple issues the I feel are holding the majority teams from switching to this product. First the notes from a lowrance need to map over with similar icons so that prerunning and shared maps can be used when teams have both brands of devices. I ran into an issue where the prerunning was done by a vehicle with a lowrance and a codriver who knew lowrance. The card mapped over fine but the icons just came over as generic pin drops. This is a huge issue for getting teams to switch over to this unit. I am currently running both units in our vehicles to get our drivers and co drivers familiar with the systems. Secondly it needs a few more specific ICONS for pin drops.

nstallation was a breeze, a really well thought out design. Had to ditch some of the hardware. Wood screws don't belong on a race car. I have a new co-driver this year and he was able to play for about an hour and have it dialed. The interface is very intuitive. Light years better than Lowrance. First race is in a couple of weeks. We will see how it holds up.

Havent used it off-road yet, but I can see its going to be cool. I wish it had a sat. imagery feature that you could just hit "along route" and it would download the imagery for that route as opposed to areas. Also, if running a preloaded route can it be recording the route as well since there are always variations on the trail.
