The Varia provides just about everything I could ask from it. I found the device to be untuitive after watching a couple of videos. It shows cars approaching from much further back that I can normally detect. More reliable than just depending on sound. I set up both my phone and my Edge to link with the Varia as suggested in a review video. The Edge shows me the approaching cars, but the phone usually sounds a more audible alert so I know to look at the Edge. I still used my mirror; I find that the Varia complements the mirror. It really shines when I need to focus on the road ahead, since I can check my Edge for cars much quicker than trying to look in the mirror or turning around to look. Very pleased.

There are many things to love about my new Varia RCT715...the precise RADAR detection of cars (or fast moving bikes) coming up on me, the brightness of the light that warns upcoming cars of my location, and the clarity of the videos captured from the camera. In addition, the bracket for the new Varia is hefty and thus holds the RCT715 in its place very well. There is little fear that the unit will fall. Unfortunately, not all is perfect with the RCT715. The bluetooth connection to view the gallery that is needed to a phone drops constantly. The ability to find videos is slow and cumbersome. And, lastly, but having to start from the top every time I switch tabs is annoying to say the least. While these a minor annoyances, they do take away from a perfect user ... Good combination of camera and radar detector. Very solid mount for bike. Extra mounts so you can switch to another bike are expensive (over 39.00) Varia ap on iphone somewhat difficult to use. I remove the card and view the video on my pc. Good pictures, but somewhat bouncy due to lack of image stabilization. i was using the original varia detector without a camera and using a cycliq rear view camera along with it. On some bikes this combo did not fit well. This is a good combination of camera and radar detector.
The Varia radar works great. The audible tone and visual display on my head unit take a lot of stress out of road riding. I don't need to hug the white line all the time - I can keep a comfortable berth from the road edge until I hear the Varia tell me a car is coming up behind me. The Varia has never failed to alert to cars, but I have failed to hear the alert when riding fast and wind noise covers up the alert sound. The alerts give you about 10 seconds before the car gets up alongside you. I haven't tried to download pictures off the SD card yet. The photo/video capability seems superfluous, and I would downgrade to the radar/tail light now.
I have been using the radar in blink light mode with a Wahoo Roam. The radar is great - I have yet to get a false negative (i.e. a car passing without it identifying it). I appreciate the extra reminder to look behind - particularly when the wind is in your ears or it is an electric car (which are so hard to hear!).Improvement area - it seems to drop out occasionally (maybe 2-3 times for longer rides) then reconnect which requires dismissing the error on my Wahoo. This may be a Wahoo issue related issue but I can't lock down the reason for the drop outs (possibly bluetooth as my phone drops out at same time often). Otherwise, an excellent unit and HIGHLY recommended. After all - what other safety prevention devices can you get for cars?

I was looking for something to make road cycling safer and this thing fit the bill. I was a little skeptical about how well it would work but it completely exceeded all my expectations. It warns you of cars approaching from the rear well before I can see them in my mirror. It even picks them up when just part of the car is barely visible on turns in the road. With the audible alert in my Aftershox Aeroplex headphones (another must have when road cycling) I can now completely concentrate on what's in front of me instead of constantly checking my mirror. At this point I feel naked without it! I would go for the 515 instead of the 300 series - the light on the 515 is very bright and the battery life is much longer.
I have rear-mounted panniers and a seat bag on one bike, and a trunk bag on the rack on another. The Varia comes with a variety of mounts for the seat post, and a warning that it needs to be level and unobstructed, so none of those mounts work for me or for anyone else who carries things on the bike. Frustrating. Garmin doesn't even make alternative mounting solutions. I hacked together a solution to hang a quarter-turn mount from my trunk bag, using an old paint stick, some coroplast cut from an old campaign poster, and a quarter-turn Garmin edge mount designed for fitting on a stem or handlebar. Inelegant, but it works.
works great if you can keep it paired with the GPS. usually, I have to turn the GPS on and off a few times to get it to pair. it will show connected but not actually be, and the only way to get it to pair is to turn it on and off. after charging, I often have to unpair then repair the units in order to get it to work, sometimes taking many repeated pairings.
