I’m very happy with this metal detector. It’s definitely surplus, but is perfectly serviceable. It was a little dusty, had some tape residue on it, and the handle grip was a bit gummy. I cleaned it up, wrapped the handle is sports tape, and its now a valuable addition to my shop!! I bought this to check reclaimed wood for metal before running it through any woodworking machines. It works great, it will even pick up my ring through a board.

While this was stated to be military surplus, it arrived dirty, broken and held together with tape. No battery, no charger, no instructions. An item in this condition should NEVER have been shipped, it should have been scrapped or destroyed.
Both items were used, both arrived dirty and I had to clean them. One worked as it was supposed to the other had a melted rubber grip that stuck to your hands like fly paper leaving behind a dirty black sticky residue. This came at the worse time because they were needed to search for weapons at a school job.
at first did not work, then it started working after a bit. used alkaline batteries over 9v so plenty of power. when it did work I compared it with a chinese clone which harbor freight sells on detecting a nail in a wooden stool. the chinese copy detected nail no prob and this surplus unit did not; even a small mini hand unit outperformed the Garret unit. That nail wood have played havoc with a jointer/planer. The Garret unit works ok on bigger metal pieces but woodworkers should stay away. Am in process of returning unit.
