GEARWRENCH has taken the ratcheting wrench design and applied it to the tap and die application. The ratcheting handles and adapters allow for easy back and forth movement required while cutting threads on either taps or dies. The 5° ratcheting arc with reversing lever eliminates hand over hand turning. The hex die adapters work on either round or hex shaped dies.

Gearwrench always has solid equipment and the best value and warranty/Ease of warranty there is. This is a great set. Has octagon shaped dies so you don’t have to really crank on the set screw. The ratcheting die runner is great. Some gauges are included so you can quickly determine threads. I need a bigger set now. Gearwrench has yet to disapoint. Nice blow case.

Good quality. Nice case. Lose one star for not including a 12x 1.25 tap. 1 million Toyota 22r engines use this size for head bolt threads. Swap the 12x 1.75 for the 1.25 and the kit is perfect!

I have used this a moderate amount to thread steel (silver steel - W1 drill rod), brass, and plastic. It is a quality product and so far it is cutting well. No complaints on the sharpness, hardness of the tool, etc. The case works well apart from the latches which have a tendency to snap off, but can be easily snapped back on.My only compliant is that it is too fancy in some cases. The ratchet head works well, but in many cases you want to go forward and backwards when forming threads to cut off the metal which is being cut by the instrument. If you don't, the tool will jam when doing larger threads. On smaller objects, in some cases you simply twist the rod off (or tap if you are threading a hole). So, a quality product, but perhaps more tech then required. I will keep it, would probably have bought it again, but don't love it due to this one design choice.

I needed a metric set for a job and, because I only need metric infrequently, didn't want to pay top dollar to McMaster Carr. I was completely blown away by the quality of this tap and die set in relation to the price paid. The taps and dies cut well and the handles and tap wrenches are beautiful. Even the plastic case is well designed to hold the contents securely in place with clear thread size locations marked. I deducted a star because the large tap wrench had a defective ball retainer. (yes the tap wrenches have spring loaded retainers to prevent the chrome plated handle from flopping about!) Not a big enough deal to go thru the hassle of returning the set, but enough to ding them a star.
I purchased this set of taps and dies as my first set. I'm happy with the other Gearwrench products I have and this is not exception. I bought this and some other tools to arm myself with what I might need to get a broken bolt out of a blind hole. I was not able to get one of the broken bolts out and that's where this came in. Drilled out the bolt to the required size (as indicated on the chart included) and successfully tapped new threads. Mission accomplished. The ratcheting T handle didn't bother me. I got the hang of flipping the little lever when I needed to back the tap out to clear the cuttings. Worked like a charm.
I've never been sure Gearwrench products are worth the price, but this set appears to be of the highest quality. The ratcheting handle is brilliant and comfortable. Some of the dies are a very tight fit in it and need to be tapped in place, but they come out with similar force from the back side. Much better than too loose. Only used one die so far, but worked fine. The case is also better quality than most molded plastic cases and is textured for a better grip. The clasps are plastic, but seem firm and likely to last.
Love the ratcheting T-handle for the taps and dies. That alone makes this kit pretty much worth it. Looking at individual prices you can get the ratcheting t-handle kit for about $40, then gearwrench taps and dies are around $10-$12/ea on home essentials direct currently. I purchased this kit at about $80 and it has already paid for itself by allowing me to save a few holes on my motor project. It's an aluminum block thats been worked over a few times now so i'm sure i'll be digging into this set again in the future. Taps and dies seem sharp, cant comment on how long they last but no cutting tool is going to last forever. Would recommend if you need a "professional" quality kit without having to finance your house to a guy on a tool truck.
Quick summary: these are great, I absolutely recommend, but if you get them make sure to to check all the cutting edges for burrs before you use them. A couple of the taps had small burrs in them that were actually easy to pick out with the included thread gauge, so it's not a dealbreaker, but you should make sure to be careful so that you don't ruin whatever piece you're working on.I've had this set for about 2 months now, and it's my first set of taps in my home toolbox, so it's safe to assume I may not be the most experienced machinist and may not have the best input. That being said, after looking at ratings and seeing how many horror stories I saw of other tap/die sets snapping during use, I went with this set because it was the only one I could find that ... MoreQuick summary: these are great, I absolutely recommend, but if you get them make sure to to check all the cutting edges for burrs before you use them. Only horror stories I saw were people saying the taps hadn't been properly de-burred before use, leading to ruined tappings, so on receipt I made sure to look through each of the taps and carefully de-burr them myself. I want to be clear -- that is absolutely a real problem that I saw with these, they do come with burrs, hence why the review is 4 stars instead of 5.Other than that, and the fact that this set is a touch more expensive than other offerings, I have no complaints. These have been a phenomenal help in my restoration project. I'm working on getting a badly beat-up Ford Fusion 2010 back into running condition, and honestly I don't think I'd have been able to do it without these. The ratchet handle is excellent, and the taps can handle an amount of force that I'm pretty sure would have snapped most bolts. I just finished rebuilding a brake caliper for which I had to grind the heads off the bolts since they were so badly seized, and drill the bolts out. The taps worked /excellently/, and the caliper now reassembles without any fight, as though it were brand new.Long story short, these are well worth the extra cost. Just make sure to check for burrs before you use, and don't forget some good machining oil!
This set is amazing! Well worth the money, in fact it is probably worth more. Great quality taps and dies! The ratcheting tap/die handle is fantastic and very smooth! Highly recommend this set if you’re in need of a metric tap and die set!!
With that headline being said and looking at other customer reviews, I can understand why this set may have gotten some negative press. Upon arrival I did check for burrs and yes, a few and only a few taps had minor burrs which I took care of. The only real issue I have which is the reason for the 4 star rating is the ratchet handle. I really don't like it. It's too large and clumsy. Instead, I use a 3/8 drive pass-thru ratchet instead. I feel like I have more control and a better "feel" whether I am tapping, thread cutting or chasing threads.
