This will not read concrete (even though it has a masonry setting - I confirmed this with the manufacturer)nor will it read accurately the moisture content of drywall - it only give a relative reading - meaning if you know one wall is dry you get a reading there and then compare it to a reading on a suspected damp wall then you can say it's wetter on the one wall than the other - I confirmed this with the manufacturer too.It does read wood well though...

No directions or guidelines relating to moisture levels. Easy to use; would be nice to know more about what is bad. I assume the beep is bad. LOL

I work with hardwoods and recently started buying rough cut hardwood that has to be dried to a low percentage before I can use it. I tested this meter on several pieces of kiln dried wood and it seems to be very accurate. It does not pierce the wood as some meters do. It “reads” down into the wood about 3/4”, so you get a solid reading. Excellent tool.

I like this moisture meter. It is very easy to use. The numbers on the display are also very easy to see and the backlit panel make it readable in dark places like attics and crawlspaces. The only drawback for me is that the drywall and masonry settings give relative moisture readings. So, it more or less only tells you if the wall is considered wet or not wet. The two wood settings give accurate moisture readings. This meter works by using the dielectric constant of the material and passing a radio frequency through the material. It is similar to ground penetrating radar. It only has a pentration of 3/4-inch. The unit has a transmitter and receiver built in. To get an accurate reading you must have it set to the currect material setting. I like this unit.
I am a woodworker who mills my own lumber. This moisture meter is GREAT. I check my material often because I live in central Virginia and the weather is bonkers. The digital scanner means that I don't have to constantly spike my material, which helps my finished look. The multiple settings are nice to have if there is ever a moisture problem in the house, I just haven't had to use it for that yet. Overall this is a great tool, especially for the price.
First learned about these types of meters 15 yrs ago when I saw a contractor trace a flat roof leak. Wanting one at the time, I found that they were too expensive for the few times I would use it. It seems that the market now has added many low-cost meters to the market, and my daughter had a hard-to-trace leak in a bathroom wall, so I checked on the spec's and user ratings on this model (MMD7NP). I bought it yesterday and used it to diagnose how far the water damage had spread, found the source of the water, and used it through different materials. It worked the same way that the contractor's $600.00 (15 years ago) meter did, and was accurate, quick, and easy to use. This rating was based on just this one job, but barring any future problems, this meter was a good ... MoreFirst learned about these types of meters 15 yrs ago when I saw a contractor trace a flat roof leak. This is legit! This is the tool water mitigation teams use when they evaluate walls for moisture. I was hesitent at first because their is a similar product that pones holes into the drywall. I did not want to hassle with that nonsense! So I made the purchase and it did the job. The insurance adjuster had no wiggle room to say that a fresh bucket of paint would resolve the issue of moisture in the walls.
Bought this to check a house we are going to purchase. It beeps at almost every corner. When we get home, we tried on our dry wall- interesting thing is, it beeps at every corner as well- Now i really doubt whether this one really works.
I had a leak that resulted in a large area of ceiling getting wet. To determine the actual extent of the damage, I bought this. It has settings for Wall, Masonry, Softwood, and Hardwood that give numbers from 0 to 100%. It has a backlit display and a Hold button to help in difficult locations. Also a LED bar graph and a beep to indicate moisture. The wet area was much larger than I hoped (about 11x11 ft ceiling, plus some wall), but clearly indicated, and confirmed by wetness as I demolished the damage. The sensing area is about 1.5" square, so it does not give a precise location, but I had an IR camera attachment for my phone that gave better spatial resolution (colder = wetter).
This product saved me a lot of $$ After the leak we had had, ServPro suggested to tear apart the walls, the floor tiles etc. So I decided to use a dehumidifier myself and track the progress. I knew exactly which wall was soaked using this product , and I could track the progress for drying the walls and floor. No mold, no water and no unnecessary repair. Thanks
