This Gerber multi-tool is quite a hefty contraption. It has LOTS of functions although I haven't really tested out everything yet, it seems like it will perform well,(within reason). The blades and scissors are very sharp new out of the package, so use caution when getting familiar with this tool. It does seem to be well-built, but I do have one reservation about it. With other multi-tools and folding knives I've had in the past, the opened tool / blade in use was locked open with a cut out that engaged with a mechanism in the handle. You would then have to apply pressure on the tool to close it up. A very simple system, like a familiar folding "jack knife". This Gerber tool has small spring loaded tabs that have to be pushed by the user to unlock the opened tool in ... MoreThis Gerber multi-tool is quite a hefty contraption. If it holds up over time this is fine , although these tabs are quite small..Use with winter gloves on is probably not going to happen. The tool has a lifetime warranty, so we shall see, although I think most people really don't use these tools half as much as they think they will. At least that's been my history with multi-tools. I always try to have full-sized hand tools nearby. Probably real handy around a campsite though.

Pros:+ Black version somewhat harder to get+ Nice quality blade, very shard from the day I got it, no resharpening required+ Non gimmick useful tools+ Spring pliers and scissors are really helpful+ Tools are easy to pull out, no nail breaking involved+ Saw is dual sided tooth, so it's more stable when cuttingCon:- The tool locking mechanism is a bit small. I have small hands and have to fiddle to unlock the tool to put it back in the handle. Not a deal breaker per se, but it takes a second too much.- The wire cutter blade were not super sharp.
I would have given 5 stars is not for the case. The tool itself performs as advertised and appears well made. As is too often with things like this, the case is a cheap after thought. The loops that hold it to the belt broke after 2 days. The only reason I bought this one over others is a liked the dual design belt loops to wear the tool horizontally. Poor stitching and it broke easily. If you can’t attach to your belt, a carabiner connection would have been nice.
I think this is a great tool. I have had cheaper multi-tools in the past and was never impressed by the flimsy quality and lack of durability. This Gerber tool is awesome and of very high quality - I'm sure it will give many years of great service. The suspension pliers seem to be made to exact tolerances as do all the tools. The Philips head screwdriver is excellent and with the locking feature, as with all of the tools, will stay open no matter the effort you apply to it. The awl looks to be a very handy tool and knife blade saver. It is made much like a knife blade but thicker and it is long enough and the perfect blade angle for scraping stuff. You will be able to use the awl instead of the knife blades for things like batteries terminals and other scraping jobs. The wood saw is quite sharp and should do good on small jobs. The tool, when closed, measured a hair over 4 inches. It comes with a sturdy nylon?? carrying case with a loop for attaching to a belt or other holder.Overall it is compact in size but will do BIG work for the tasks at hand.
This is a very nice multi-tool, The construction is nice and stiff, without a lot of bend or flex in the handle or tools. The knife blades are sharp and seem to be of decent metal. The scissors are sharp and cut well. I like that each or all of the tools will lock in the out position. When the pliers are open the handles click into place nice and solid and the pliers are spring loaded to open, which is nice. The pliers also have a wire cutter built in. The tools it comes with are, small Scissors (that also are spring loaded to the open position), Can Opener, Bottle Opener, Small Flat Screwdriver, 1 1/4" Knife, Medium Flat Screwdriver, File, 1 1/2" Ruler, 2" Knife, 2 1/2 Knife (with serrated blade), Large Flat Screwdriver, A sharpened V shaped cutout (I am not sure ... MoreThis is a very nice multi-tool, The construction is nice and stiff, without a lot of bend or flex in the handle or tools. I may have missed or mislabeled some of the tools but that should give you a pretty good idea what it will do. The case is of decent material with belt loops for Horizontal or Vertical mount and a velcro fastening on the cover flap. I would have liked to see the loops have velcro so that you could attach it so something like a roll bar. It measures about 4 1/4" long, 2" wide, 3/4 deep when closed, and about 6" long and 5" wide in the pliers mode. All in all a nice tool that functions well and should last.
This is my review of the Gerber 'Truss' multi-tool, which I received for free in exchange for my unbiased review. As the others have said, this seems to be a solidly built tool, with sharp blades. Some of the tools have nice 'large' open slots on the sides for easier opening/grabbing with your fingernail, which after using a Swiss Army knife, is very helpful. Other tools inside those have a sorta 'notch/lift hook' thing on their top edge to grab with your fingernail. These are a bit tougher to open, but may be easier after some use. It's pretty firm to open up the two halves too, for now. The tools lock into place fine, and then you have to slide both little spring slides on each side to unlock the tool to fold it back in, but you only have to get it just past the ... MoreThis is my review of the Gerber 'Truss' multi-tool, which I received for free in exchange for my unbiased review. Other tools inside those have a sorta 'notch/lift hook' thing on their top edge to grab with your fingernail. These are a bit tougher to open, but may be easier after some use. It's pretty firm to open up the two halves too, for now. The tools lock into place fine, and then you have to slide both little spring slides on each side to unlock the tool to fold it back in, but you only have to get it just past the lock part, then it will fold in without having to hold the spring slides. So not a one hand operation really, although you can pull the slides and push tool against something to close it a bit. It comes with no instructions or diagrams to show you how to operate it, at least mine didn't. It's pretty easy to figure out, but it should have some kind of pics and names for the tools so you're sure of what's what, if you've never owned one of these before. I haven't USED it yet to any degree, so not sure of longevity, but seems well built. The saw blade is a wicked little thing, fairly heavily toothed, so not for sawing delicate things or making fine thin cuts. The scissors cut ok after you get them started a bit, but they tended to pinch the paper at first, but the more pages or thicker the paper, the easier it starts cutting. The 'pliers' cutout part behind the needlenose is good for nuts or items up to about 3/4" in the middle, and down to about 3/16" in the middle, and smaller towards either end. Tips of the needlenose open are 1 1/8" apart. What they call an awl is not an awl to me (a round pointy rod), but guess that's the name of the shortest/thickest blade, as another reviewer said it was good for scraping, to save the wear on the other regular blades. If my pic shows, you can see that you can use the non-plier tools with the thing closed, or opened halfway for a longer reach. But you can't put much downward/cutting pressure on it in the long/halfway open position, as it will want to unfold more, but for the screwdriver tools, you can twist them fine. The pouch can fit on your belt both vertically and horizontally with its loops, so that's nifty. This tool will live in my car and probably get very little use, but good to have when you need it. Could be used to break a car door window too. This model was one of the lower-priced ones, but had plenty of tools, and I saw no need for the more expensive ones for me, so if you're on a budget, this is an ok deal for this type of tool of this quality. Great gift too.
at no fault of sg I found the gerber multi tool to be cheap crap vs my leatherman tools. i bought 2 of these to keep in seperate locations and i found them to be very cheap i wish i had bought leatherman. of course a similar leatherman is twice the price but i found the wire cutters on the gerbers to be too blunt to work and the blades to be dull and several of the tools to be so cheaply shaped that theyre basically unusable. the spring loaded plier function does seem to be nice on these but as for the multi function tools they are crap.
I really like this multi tool. I have an old multi tool, which i've used a lot, but am in generally, not that up to date with the latest products, so i'm sure there have been many innovations and improvements in the category in the past decade. This Gerber was impressive in its build quality. When you open it, the main tool is pliers, which are spring loaded and feel great to use. I especially appreciate the spring that makes the pliers really easy to use.In addition, there are four blades- a saw tooth blade, a half serrated blade, straight edge blade, and what appears to be a smaller straight edge blade (most likely to be used as an awl, and NOT a blade). There are also philips and various sized flat head screw heads, scissors, beer/can opener, and a ... MoreI really like this multi tool. The other side of this measurer is a file. When you extend any of the tools (not pliers), there is a lock/unlock mechanism on both sides of each handle that you have to engage in order to flip the tool back into the handle itself. Be sure to be careful when you're handling the knives, and make sure to unlock the mechanism. The swing action is smooth and reliable, and you should not have to push particularly hard or endanger yourself in doing so. This is a well designed and well built tool, and I am satisfied with it for my needs. It has a premium feel to it- the metal looks and feels great in my hands, I'm pleased I got this.I'm still familiarizing myself with it, so there could be other features that I'm missing. This also comes with a carrying case/sheath that you can put on your belt. I dont really needs multitools that often to warrant carrying them around with me all the time, but it's a nice addition. Definitely a good way to store it.Unless you have very specific needs and super high demands, I think this product will meet almost everyone's needs. Its a great product.
