If you need to drop the background a little darker, you can simply add some light to the subject. Adjust for a correct flesh tone exposure and you can drop the background a stop or more. With a variable output like this light has, this becomes easier than past lighting solutions. If the background is utterly boring, use this light to throw some colored light into the background using the RGB settings, pick your color and intensity. As you darken the background, a hair-light becomes more important. This Godox light, with a simple improvised barn-door, is a great hair-light. Last week I was interviewing a subject in front of a gree-screen holding a guitar. The instrument was golden wood. I dialed in a warm, gold, hair-light and the composition jumped to life. Very handy. I'm not entirely sold on the flexible mounting arm. A small ball-head will do the job. Fortunately, it has multiple 1/4 - 20's. Three of these will fit into almost any camera case and solve almost all interview lighting issues. I wish it had even a single, fold-flat-against-the-front, barn-door. That would make it perfect.

Probably one of my favorite pieces of gear in my kit. As we all know, lighting makes all the difference in a shot. This small portable light can fit in so many weird places to add light to your scene. The adjustable handle means it can stand on it's own at different angles. I've even used it for key lighting in more tense or dimly lit scenes. But I mostly use it for backlighting a subject. It's small form factor is a huge advantage. The battery at full blast lasts me a little more than 3 hours continuously. Longer if you turn it off occasionally or you can simply plug it with a USB C charger. Well done Godox. I'll pick another up once I see it on sale.

Good video light for its small size

I like the adjustable color temperature. Great light, one minor downside.
3 December 2021

This light is bright, and built REALLY tough. The quality looks great. My only negative about this light is the way you have change color temperature. The knob or click wheel that you have to use to change the temperature requires you to move it each and every time, and this light really fine adjusts the color, so moving from say 4000k to 5600k takes a full minute of clicking. I wish it were a scroll wheel like the one above it that you use for dialing in the intensity. Maybe they can fix this via a firmware update where if you click and hold it will continue in that direction and speed up.

HAD TO BUY A SECOND ONE
7 February 2023

I asked the tec at B & H about on camera lights and he mentioned that the M1 was a favorite. They had all sold out ad more were expected. I waited for a short period and they came in. This light solves ALL my lighting problems. The features like this light responding to Music is just plain Awesome. And that's only ONE of the number of features. Long story short, I had to get a Second One.

I use these for so many things
13 January 2023

I originally bought two of these for lighting Zoom calls. These are incredibly versatile with continuously variable color temperature to match whatever room light I'm in. Variable brightness levels too. That swinging arm on the side lets you mount and adjust the light in multiple axes and has 1/4 threaded mounts. I rarely use them at more than 50% brightness and they last for several hours. Now I use these for all kinds of things: as a work light in the garage, fixing plumbing under a sink - we even used the special effects modes for Halloween lighting. Who knew these would be so versatile!

These are GREAT little lights.

These are really great. I have two lighter LumeCube Panel GO lights and like them, but wanted to add two RGB lights. These are sturdy, mostly metal-frame construction, and feel substantial. They came almost frozen, and still were able to light up / turn on. So I know they can be used outdoors in midwest winter :). They come with a small USB-A-to-USB-C cable, and a nice tight-fitting protective stretchy sock / bag, which is handy for packing them. The ingenious metal bracket has 8 (!) places that will take a 1/4-20 standard screw, and the unit comes with a hot shoe to 1/2-20 male post adapter for it. The bracket also works as its own little tilt-stand.Setting the white light temp, switching to RGB color range, changing brightness (in 1% increments), and colors (using a clever circular color-reference chart that is built into the circle that surrounds the tiny but bright settings display), and using a dozen or so special effects (that I will likely never use) is simple, intuitive, and fast - I was able to figure out how to change all the settings after a minute or so, no manual needed. And (unlike Lume Cube that blasts ridiculously superbright light at supposed 1%) setting Godox to brightness 1% is appropriately lower level and produces gentle pleasant light. You can dial the color, and quickly change both its saturation (intensity) and its brightness, so that you can get very subtle, slightly colored light effects (or a full intensity, saturated color bright light). Oh yes, and it will pulsate to the rhythm of music, changing colors :).I know these are not as popular on YouTube as a few other heavily infuencer-promoted brands, and admittedly - if you want a phone app to go with it (which might be convenient occasionally), this doesn't have it; and it you want to attach it to your refrigerator (?!?), it does not have a built-in magnet; and you want to charge it wirelessly - no, but you can charge it fast via USB-C.So it has what might be seen as downsides, but I just wanted a pair of sturdy RGB lights, with flexible mounting options and these are perfect for that.

Versatile, good output, solid build.

Versatile, good output, solid build. Would be better if it worked with an app, or had the option to connect sony npf type batteries or something like that, or a/c power connection option. But battery life is very good, as is output. Also the mounting design is really good. Easy control interface too, and glad it displays battery level and settings info. Solid product.

Very good light
4 November 2022

Purchased this light for video scenes. I've shot several scenes involving the appearance of an ambulance and a police car and the results are very realistic. I only wish that the police mode would allow the ability to flash only blue lights instead of blue and red lights. In this city the police flash only blue lights. Mounting is not an issue and it is a vey bright light. Solidly made and should be able to withstand what I throw at it.

a fun do-it-all light for a reasonable price
14 December 2020

Funny enough - in the 2 weeks that I've had this now, I have really only been using it to light my room + working space as an ambient booster. It works wonderfully. I have mounted it a couple times onto the camera to see how well it'd light up a scene/room in low or no light, and the results are spectacular. With the flexible mounting points and all the ways the unit can swivel and turn (an absolute selling point/party trick), you could really fine-tune the angle of direct or indirect lighting for the effect you're envisioning. Not all of the presets are useful for everyone, but they sure can be fun to experiment, or simply to set the mood for a dance party or something. There are other lights out there with as bright of output but probably with a lesser feature set for less cost. I'd have hesitated on getting it at full retail. Nonetheless, this has been a great addition to the kit!
