Best streaming device

The device itself has a USB power adapter included, which you need to use instead of plugging into a USB port on the TV. Apparently the USB port doesn't supply enough power. The only aspect I don't like is the remote control. It has dedicated Youtube and Netflix buttons - I wish there were a few more service shortcut buttons, and that all of them were able to be customized to launch the services you'd prefer. Also, the volume buttons on the side of the remote feel a little awkward to use.

If you are just going to use the common default apps for tv/movie streaming services on your smart tv - you may find that you do not need this device. Your latest smart tv will pretty much have similar services and apps. The home interface between the smart tv default vs Google TV is very similar - so no issues there. However, I find that Google understands voice commands better - it was easier to tell it what to do and it does it correctly; the other ones just frustrate me.There is an issue with my smart TV that is resolved when using the Google TV Chromecast. The issue with the sleep functionality - the default is set to turn off the TV after 15-20 minutes - and turning off the sleep functionality is not available on settings and even if you follow known solutions, it may still not work on the device - the steps can be so cumbersome - tinkering with the TVs developer options. It was a great relief to find that this is not a problem with the Chromecast device. It was really frustrating when I pause what I am watching, and find that I have do something, I come back and the TV is turned off and I lose where and what I am watching; and when using my tv to play digital music files (MP3, etc) available in my local network - after 4-5 songs - it turns off - it cannot play indefinitely. Sometimes I just want my TV on - even on the home screen - especially for longer than 20 minutes - while I decide what to do next. Also, what I like about the Chromecast device is that it can travel with me - my work laptop is secured and I avoid using it for 'personal' data. I also find that it is easier to cast my computer/PC while the Google Chromecast device. I have been using my new smart tv without the Chromecast device for 5 months, and when I connected and used the Google Chromecast - I find it overall better. And even more great is I can use the Chromecast device to upgrade my older TVs and it will not cost me a brand new TV.I am still getting used to the remote that came with the device, the volume control is on the side and not on the face of the remote; also it does not have buttons for 'shortcuts' to my most used apps - not a showstopper.

Then I could navigate my subscriptions, search history, and videos suggested based on my activity, all from my standard television remote without having to put on my glasses to see my phone and cast each video individually. But in June of 2022, all of that functionality went away.Google now prevents you from signing in. You must either browse as a guest, or cast each video separately. In both cases, turning Autoplay off doesn't seem to work. And as a guest, you are forced into watching additional paid advertisements, even if you are paying extra for a YouTube Premium account. This is true for all family members on a Family Account as well, if they rely on a Google Chromecast prior to the Chromecast with Google TV. And it will happen without warning. You could buy a $50 Chromecast with Google TV (CwGTV) to restore this functionality. But this change suddenly comes before a newer, cheaper model of CwGTV clears FCC approval. And there are a lot of people who don't trust a remote control with a microphone built into it... which comes standard, so even if you don't plan on using it, you're paying for it.Do not buy a Google Chromecast. Their full functionality is broken: It still prompts you to sign in, then tells you that you can't sign in (as of writing this review 24 June 2022). This particular model was released on October 10, 2018. If being forced into buying a new device every three years for no real good reason is okay with you, then continue to purchase Made By Google and Nest products. But if you don't want to run out and buy a new device just because someone flipped a switch, I would advise you to consider Roku, Firestick, or using some other device (possibly OLDER) that still works properly. At the time of this writing, my Sony Bravia with YouTube built-in is older than this, and the YouTube app still works. So does the PS4. The Chromecast devices are the only ones affected, deliberately by Google.

I was able to pair our soundbar/surround sound setup with the remote and control everything off one remote. The Chromecast remote acts like a universal remote for all three devices, the TV, our soundbar, and the Chromecast. The remote is just the right size, in my opinion as it’s easy hold and use with one hand and overall, the voice assistant works well too!Streaming has never been easier and Chromecast seems to do it very well. It’s priced well and offers immense value; I like that you can choose between HD or 4K Chromecast depending on your needs. No need to shell out more cash if the TV you own is HD.

Flawless Plug and Play Device for Entertainment

This is a review of the Google Chromecast with Google TV HD version. To be honest I thought the chromecast was just a device to cast from your phone/computer to your TV. Although it does do that, it also has all the available streaming apps. If you have a newer 4k tv then I would definitely recommend getting the 4k version as I read it does all the same things as this version with all the features but has 4k and Dolby vision. If you have an older tv that is only HD then this version will work great. Even if your TV is already a smart tv – I would still purchase this as this device has so many additional features than most smart tv’s and would save wear and tear on the TV. Overall Google has done a great job in creating this device as the features easily outperform my other streaming devices.

Love my chromecast
12 December 2022

I am a huge fan of Google Chromecast. I have tried so many different "Smart TV" softwares and Google makes the best one. I love that the remote is SIMPLE. I always found remotes with a lot of buttons and features to be more annoying than helpful. This one is dead simple to use. I love the Chromecast has so many of the different streaming services built in. I have used other software that was missing some of the major streamers, which seems crazy. The best part about the Chromecast compared to others is that they aggregate the content across my different streaming services. I use five different services and this allows me to see all of my free content in one place rather than jumping around the each of them as I am looking to find my next show/movie to watch.

From an old TV, or monitor or projector with hdmi input, you can make a smart device. The device works quickly, there is a voice search on the remote control. You can install applications from the play market, but not all. If you buy a type c dongle, you will be able to install almost any apk application. Before that, you need to unlock the developer mode (there is a video on YouTube, you just need to click on one menu item 5 times) and format the flash drive in the fat32 system. Why I put 4 stars, due to the fact that the device understands only the fat32 file system, and Accordingly, a file larger than 4 GB cannot be uploaded to a USB flash drive. And I would like to be able to watch movies or my archives without the Internet. And device is not able to play 4k ... MoreFrom an old TV, or monitor or projector with hdmi input, you can make a smart device. And device is not able to play 4k video from a flash drive - it slows down. Also - my old Sony receiver - the buttons from the remote control could not be configured for it.My verdict: only for online streaming services, but for 30$ - to make YouTube viewing from any monitor - super!
