Because even after I cleared the footage from the day time durning my setup of device and lounging around fiddling with it the camera only functioned as live stream with no more notifications before I subscribed to their trial. (researched confirmed in google community support forum post that this is intended) Cannot simply detect any motion by change of "pixles" and only detect by preset categories of person, animal, or vehicle etc. Does not record intial detection and records too long after detection. examples: Notification when child sat up in the middle of the night but only recorded as they were laying back down. Notification when child woke up and ran out of the room in the morning but only recorded an empty room not even a blur of child. We are required to set max length to limit individual recordings (10s, 15s, etc). Therefore unfortunately if an event is longer than the max recording limit, it just stops recording the event. You wont be given a series of notifications and clips for the duration of the event.

My live video does go black screen for a second and then picks back up about every minute or so. Night vision is not bad up close, but depth is not the greatest. One of the Cons on this totally wireless camera is that there are only the last three hours of recorded events available whereas if you use an actual power cord, it will evidently continue to record and store if you choose. The other Nest indoor cameras were a good model aside from the yearly subscription fees. This product to me just seems like more of a glorified trail cam that requires WiFi and constant recharging. Going to purchase an aftermarket power cord for it to see if I like the performance any better. Three stars is the best I can give it at this point.

Great upgrade from my Xfinity cameras. I considered these because I am a Google user that has other Google Nest products on my home. The problem is that I had cameras from three different systems which means I had to go to three different apps to check any type of surveillance. My goal overall was to try to go to a single pane of glass meaning a single app for all of my surveillance inside and outside of my home. They had a benefit of going with the Google solution means that not only do I have a single pane of glass to surveil my entire property but it also integrates with my smoke detectors my doorbell my screens my television, lights, etc., so all of these things on a single app is beneficial and more efficient. This camera are sharp, the cloud device is great, and it integrates perfectly into my existing Google Home products. I also have Eufy cameras, which are better priced, but while they do integrate with Google Home, their integration is not as seamless. Also, one of the benefits of the new fees is the ability to record only to the base station. Issue here, is that the base station off and runs out of memory after you owned it for sometime so you tend to lose our travel footage. You can pay for cloud storage, but that is an added cost that brings it closer to in line with the Google offerings. Really caught a great deal of catching these open box. This really kicked the value option out of the park for me. This outdoor camera is great. Mounting can be tricky, make sure to take a few minutes to and plan out your mounting options. Dismounting to recharge is very easy, as it is held on with one of the strongest magnet is have ever seen for it's size. It is very secure. All of that said, I am running my with a solar panel. This is a lesson learned from other battery powered cameras I've owned. The benefit is that you can place them any and everywhere, but you have to climb a ladder every couple of months to dismount them and recharge the device. This. Gets. Old...solar panel are highly effective and I recommend this.

Huge step backward for Nest
3 April 2022

I bought 3 of these from a different retailer and have been using them for about six months now. I have been a long time Nest user (since the good old days prior to the Google buyout), and have literally every product they have come out with prior to these cameras, all of which have been fantastic. And then comes this little gem. Where to start? First, the positives. The picture quality and night vision are good, in line with the older cameras, although not as good as the Outdoor IQ. Motion sensing is good when you have the camera positioned correctly. Installation is super easy and the magnets are crazy strong. And that’s where the good stuff stops. The battery life is awful if they are in a busy area (3 days for my two busy cameras), so I ended up buying a power cord for one of them, which I would recommend if you must have these. The one in the less busy area gets over a month of battery life, but I also don’t have it adjusted quite right, so it’s missing a lot of motion. I did adjust some of my settings to try to improve battery life, but I wasn’t comfortable sacrificing much awareness of what was going on around my home. If you want 24/7 continuous video recording, you obviously need the power cable. I have definitely discovered that I would rather have always on over the hassle of recharging all the time. Charging takes quite awhile, too, about 4-5 hours, so if you don’t want any down time on your cameras, that’s a consideration. With these cameras, the alerts for dogs barking and people speaking has gone away, even when powered continuously. I use the dog bark alerts to know when my dogs are barking when I’m away and to quiet them by talking to them through the camera. Losing this feature is a big deal to me. And if you live somewhere that gets cold, be prepared for these cameras to not function when the temperature drops. I live in Montana, and these things quit working when it gets to around 15 degrees, even though the specs say they are rated to -4. I’ve even had them go offline due to “severe temperatures” when it’s been in the 20s. The one that is plugged in all the time does work in lower temps, and did manage to stay online to about 0 degrees a few times, but it’s not consistent. The older cameras have NEVER gone offline for weather, including the doorbell and regular Outdoor camera that are also rated to -4 degrees. And this includes temperatures well into the -20 to -30 range with wind chills into the -40s. Not super unexpected that something battery operated doesn’t work in cold temps…but I had expected it to at least work to the operating specs. Also, these cameras require you to use the Google Home app to view the cameras; you can’t see these cameras in the Nest app (the app that actually works!). The Home app is very buggy and constantly has issues staying connected to the cameras when you are trying to actually view footage or the app just randomly quits. No, it’s not a wifi issue because an older camera in one of the same places never dropped and I have great signal strength in all the camera locations. Older generation cameras can be viewed in the Home app, but frequently show as being offline in the Home app when they are perfectly fine in the Nest app. History for the older cameras is accessed differently in the Home app (and more awkwardly) than it is for the new cameras in the EXACT SAME APP. So you end up having to use two apps for cameras that are all under the Nest umbrella to be able to use all of the features, which is cumbersome and incredibly annoying. Another annoyance with the Home app is that you can’t just see all of your cameras right away when you open the app like you can with the Nest app; you have to open the app and then click on Cameras - just an extra step and something that takes longer when you are in a hurry to see something. Long story short, thanks to all of these factors, it takes longer to be able to actually see what’s going on, which is the whole point of having these cameras. These new cameras also no longer have the ability to look at your footage on the web app, which was a feature that made making clips so much easier. We also lost the ability to create timelapse videos since there is no access to the web app. The Google Home app is TERRIBLE and is a huge step backward over the Nest app. WHY would Google want to switch everything over to a new app that doesn’t even work when the Nest app has been awesome for years and years?? And then to not even make everything compatible? Google obviously has zero care for those of us who have heavily invested in Nest products over the years, which we did because the products and the software were superb, and if this is the direction they are taking Nest, they are going to find that people will move on to other products. I really wanted to like these cameras because of the convenience factor of not having to worry about where to plug in. As it is, I managed to find and purchase a couple of the older Nest Outdoor cameras and when they arrive, I will be swapping these new models out for something that actually works consistently and does what I want it to do. And hopefully I can recoup at least some of my costs by selling them online. By the looks of things, I’m not the only one doing this. Definitely do not recommend these cameras, especially if you are used to the features and functionality of the older models and Nest app.

Not a fan of the new nest cams

I have 4 of the original nest cams in 2 different houses, and we wanted additional cameras for our barn and bought these. We have returned and gone back to the first generation cameras for several reasons. The feed is grossly delayed (up to 20 min) compared to the regular ones. Notified a person is there but the video won’t load for 20 min. Per the internet there is some uploading to the cloud that must take place, and some people have a delay of 10 seconds or so. That was not my experience, it was grossly delayed, and that has never been my experience with the original cameras. There is no continuous feed where you can scroll back to see the entire 24 hours. If nest didn’t pick up something as an alert, you aren’t going to be able to review the feed. There are a lot of reasons we like to do this- including when people may walk through your yard and it’s visible on the video, but the camera isn’t sensitive enough to trigger an alert. The battery life ranges from 1-6months. Our cameras are not in the most convenient location and I wouldn’t want to get on a ladder in December to charge one. You can purchase a cord for $30 (they must be modeling after apple). Many others commented that these will not integrate into the nest app. I would have been fine changing to google home app, but for all the other reasons above these cameras were not what we wanted. Found some older versions and we are sticking to those.

It leverage mostly the setting available through Google Home for the camera like defining Activity Zone and Alert, Set stay Home status or Away, option to selective notification. One key benefit is the option to be independent of subscription as it retain 3 hours event history. If faced detection is needed it does require Nest Aware subscription that keep 60 days of video history. On camera resolution is not the best, feels the grain in the picture and video and during night as well. But still does suffice for the basic. However the most benefit seems the software behind for detection of motion and alert and trade for mobility as it use based on battery. Note on the magnet that hold the camera, it is a very strong magnet and has warning of awareness for heart pace maker which make sense and user should be careful to keep the distance. On the other hand, from the app, multiple users can view simultaneously the live video, and its audio deliver crisp sound conversation from mobile app and the camera allowing to maintain a conversation without lagging or froze of image and sound. It is recommendable as per its price range vs the pack of features that support and better if using the Google Nest ecosystem.

Smart, Wire-Free, Works best with subscription
13 October 2021

This camera integrates well into the Google Home ecosystem providing a wire-free solution with 1080p quality video although there’s some room for improvement. // Setup Just like most Google Home products, setup was simple using the Google Home App where you scan a QR code to pair it with the app. // The Camera The camera itself is built well and has a solid construction. It’s quite a bit larger than other cameras on the market possibly due to a large battery and because of its weight it has a very strong magnet that’s used for mounting, allowing you to adjust the camera angle. // Mounting For mounting, it comes with a plate that you can attach to different surfaces and it comes with a couple screws and anchors to attach it to a wall and you could even mount it on a ceiling since the magnet is strong. The convenient thing about this particular Nest cam of course is that it has a built in battery so you can mount it anywhere that’s in range of your wifi without having external power. It comes with a charging cable but it’s a rather short 1 meter cable, however there’s an optional 5 or 10 meter weatherproof cable available as an accessory. // Optional Base There’s also an optional base/stand if you don’t want to mount it to a wall and prefer to place this camera on horizontal surface, like on a table or shelf. The stand has a rubber base, it’s heavy, and along with the weight of the camera there’s very little chance of it tipping over. The stand also comes with an adequate 3 meter power cable to keep the camera powered all the time. The design of the base is a little odd though and it only allows you to have the camera completely horizontal or rotate it 45 degrees downwards. It’s more of a pivot and less of a ball joint which would have provided more viewing angle options. // Video Quality It has 1080p video quality which is sufficient in most cases but it would have been much better with 2K or 4K. It has a 110 degree field of view which works well in plenty of use cases but would have loved to see a slightly wider field of view. Viewing footage in the Google Home app is very well thought out and scrubbing through recorded events is a great experience. // Intelligent The highlight of this camera though is how smart it is in terms of identifying people, animals, and vehicles having little to no false alarms with stuff like insects, shadows, etc… And I very much like the fact that you can create free form activity zones (not just a square but a custom shape) to specify areas in the camera view to get specific notifications. With the intelligent detection, this allows this camera to get great battery life, I’m talking months before having to recharge. // Subscription With the Nest Aware Plus monthly subscription, you can have 10 days of continuous 24/7 recording history but do note that without a subscription, you only get 3 hours of recording and that’s not 3 hours of footage, that’s just the last 3 hour period of time. So if you’re looking for a security camera solution without a monthly fee, you may want to consider other options. // Thoughts This camera is extremely intelligent, it’s built well, has great battery life, and integrates well into the Google Home ecosystem, but I would only purchase this camera if you are OK with the monthly subscription fee,

Solid camera, poor design choices
12 September 2022

After a week with these new cameras, I'm baffled by design choices that Google made compared to the previous generation of Nest cameras. While these cameras look like they're built well, and they install easily, that's about the end of the pros. In order to view footage from these cameras, you have to use the Google Home app instead of the Nest app. This means that if you're an existing user with other cameras, thermostats, etc. you now need a second app and you can't view all your cameras in one spot. Even worse, there is no web interface for the Home app, so you have to manage everything on your phone with multiple apps. Even worse, there is no web interface for the Home app, so you have to manage everything on your phone with multiple apps. Secondly, even though this product is a multi-pack, it only comes with one charging cable for the cameras. This means that when it eventually comes time to charge your cameras, you'll have to do so one at a time. You can reach out to Google support and they'll send you another charging cable if you ask for it, but it's an odd choice to not include in the box. The cameras don't constantly stream footage (to preserve battery life). This means that when you want to check what's going on (if you remember to use the right app), the camera will often report being in an "idle" state. You then have to try and get it to stream live video, which sometimes works and sometimes doesn't. Lastly and most disappointing, the battery life is nowhere near close to the advertised details; I charged the camera to 95% when I installed it, and a week later it's down to 30% and tells me there is 2 days battery life remaining. I would not recommend this camera to anyone unless they have very specific use cases in low-traffic areas, where removing and recharging the camera won't be a bother, and only if this is your first Nest product.

Very Average performance. Buy with hesitation.

It’s a love hate relationship with Nest products. My home has Nest Thermostat, Protect smoke/carbon monoxide detectors and Nest wired and wireless cameras. Ever since being acquired by Google the products are glitchy and lesser in quality. Sometimes they will not connect or you’ll randomly get logged off and need to log into Google home again. These cameras do not use the Nest App. Instead you need a Google Home account. I run a half gig mesh network so I do not have Internet connectivity or speed issues. Since I have already invested so much in their products, it’s hard to start over and I just put up with their shortcomings. Definitely wait for their products to go on sale. Since I have already invested so much in their products, it’s hard to start over and I just put up with their shortcomings. Definitely wait for their products to go on sale. They are not worth full price. The NestCam Outdoor has rechargeable batteries for flexible wireless mounting and operations. Depending on how often you view the camera or turns on due to motion, your battery life will vary. I get about a month on a charge. (Tip: use a portable battery pack to recharge so you don’t have to take the camera down) The better option is to keep the camera wired. Either with the included charging cable or a longer outdoor cable. This will ensure continuous power and allow live streaming. The basic free service only keeps 3 hours of history so it’s basically useless if you missed an alert or want to check what happened earlier. You’ll have to decide if it’s worth the premium for Nest Aware and the longer cloud history and continuous feed. These cameras do not produce good images. They’re actually pretty bad. Things are grainy and you won’t be able to make out a clock in the wall and most text. Low light makes the image even worst. The nighttime mode which you can set manually or automatically helps with dark settings. But it’s still grainy and the video is black and white. The problem is that Nest has to balance the free storage they provide and most homes Internet bandwidth so they must be purposely lowering the resolutions of the cameras. Camera technology is so inexpensive nowadays that you would expect razor sharp 1080p images where license plates are easily read. This is not the case with these Nest cameras. The performance is highly dependent on your internet speed, where you mount them, how much light is available and how far the objects are. Zooming in is even worst. At the end of the day you’ll have to balance price and convenience with performances. The Google Home interface kinda works. But I had to install and uninstall several times before I was able to add this camera. It really shouldn’t be this difficult. Buy with hesitation if you’re already in the Nest ecosystem and don’t want to start over. But there are probably better alternatives.

We have 3 of these
16 July 2022

These work best when plugged in full time and with the 24hr recording subscription. Otherwise, some features are disabled. Like animal detection and 24/7 cloud-saved video. The lower tier subscription records motion events, but these don't always detect motion from animals even when plugged in. We used to have the lower tier sub (with the camera plugged in full time), but even when an eagle flew 30 ft in front of the camera or a deer walked past, it didn't detect the motion. In those cases, you can't go back and see it in your history. So, we upgraded to 24/7 recording. The camera also does not record 24/7 if you are running it just off the battery. The camera loves bugs. It doesn't turn on when a deer walks by, but moths fly by for all of one second, and it detects and records that. We added a camera to monitor the hummingbird feeder so we could catch the raccoons climbing the post and tearing it down at night (they just recently found it). However, we ran this camera solely on battery. Despite being less than 10 feet from the feeder... the camera didn't detect any motion, and the raccoons ravaged the feeder without being recorded. So, we have ordered the cable to have it powered full time, and even if it doesn't detect motion, at least we have 24/7 video history that you don't get with just the battery. Another thing you should know is if you live in a place with below-freezing temperatures in the winter. The battery does not hold its charge well and drains incredibly quickly. This was another reason we added the cable. In our experience, though, when we lost power one night in the dead of winter, we found that the battery also hadn't charged during the cold temperatures, despite being plugged in 24/7. The battery didn't function as a backup during the power outage as hoped.
