That's why go pros are the best and worst cameras ever. They over heat, you have to restart them daily...but they do amazing things. I just upgraded to the MAX from a gopro 7 and I am absolutely blown away by the improved audio, video and field of view.

I took a 21 minute bike ride thru a forest trail in the 360° mode and by the time I stopped and checked the battery at the end of the ride, I was already down to 66% battery left. IF that worked out in a linear fashion, you'd only get an hour of recording time. And we all know batteries crash faster as they deplete. If you want to plug an external power pack into it you can, but the USB-C connection point is inside the unit where the battery is, so you'd have to ride with that door open and mount an external power pack on you somewhere with a cable running to it. The other weird thing GoPro is doing, at least with THIS camera is, when I went to their site to register it, well, you don't DO that any longer. I tried and wound up talking to a customer service person who wanted to know why I wanted to register it. I reminded them that I've done that with all my other GoPro cams and she said just hang on to proof of purchase (like an invoice) and if I ever needed warranty help that's all it would take. I just always though it made more sense to register a product when you bought it, but hey that's just me. Overall... I like it. I'm sure I'll like it better as I get used to differences this has from all the other regular cams.

I bought this camera exactly 2 years ago. And stopped using it after 3 months.My main purpose was to get an unusual images from my vacations. And soon I found the commercials are not truthful. Yes, the camera is really waterproof, I swam with it in ocean a dozen times. But nobody told me the GoPro Max is useless underwater! Being immersed even in 1 inch into water, it provides blurry unusable pics.The second disappointment is the quality. Even In sunny day, with cleaned lenses it doesn't provide a real 4K resolution. Sorry, it is not even close to GoPro 8 and higher.

First one I ordered elsewhere had issues operating from battery after the first day so I returned it and ordered from B&H. The 2nd one arrived in totally different packaging which indicates the 1st one was an earlier release. As I also recently discovered with my newly purchased Hero 9 Black, some recording modes unfortunately utilize the wretched HEVC h.265 codec, which is a pain to edit. Many older CPUs and GPUs don't have the hardware decoding ability so it will not work on such systems regardless of the software you install. For instance one of my i7 machines could import and play it but the older i7 couldn't even using the same software.The GoPro App will allow you to work with and export the footage, and Resolve 17, Lightworks Pro, HitFilm Pro (new version) ... Got this to keep an eye on things while I commute by bike. Worked well all summer. My ride is about 6.5 miles, with 1 mile on roads to the trail, 4.5 miles on the trail, and 1 mile on roads from the trail to the office. No need to record my time on the trail, I'd turn it off once I was on the trail, but once the temperature started getting below 50F the battery wouldn't stay on when I turned it back on at the other end of the trail. Below 40F it doesn't stay warm enough in a pocket to be able to turn on again at the other end of the trail. So now I'm recording the entire ride, which means I'm charging the camera every day and manually clearing the card every other day to be able to record my rides. Then, the camera connection between the phone failed again and again. I'm not sure if it ever finally connected.4) forgetting about the above, I plugged the camera into my windows 10, one year old desktop, to have it a go the more traditional route.5) I did a test shot, then found the file on my desktop, but of course, it wouldn't play without some app or program.6) I downloaded the GoPro program which was suggested and it installed.7) I had to create a GoPro account, which I did, but when asked me to finally log in, it said that my password was invalid.8) I tried this again and again, new accounts, new passwords, forgot password, rinse and repeat, to no avail.9) I called B&H and, as always, they were very helpful and quickly processed my return.I'm not the most tech savvy, but I was a professional photographer and still work with pro dSLRs, medium format cameras, multitude of studio lighting, and various editing software, so I'm relatively competent. I just don't understand why they make it so complicated. I can grab my Leica, Hasselblad, Panasonic, Nikon, and connect it to my computer and begin working with files pretty quickly and easily. I just don't get it. I'm sure some of you are laughing at this review right now, and maybe appropriately so, but for me, this was way to much work to simply get going.
I've owned the Samsung gear 360 since 2015, it still worked, it needed a PC at home to stitch. This can now be done using my phone using the go pro max quik app. A wide range of shots, photo and video can be captured. Ideal for vr content. Swappable batteries allows extended use. Great 360 sound recording. I suggest you look at the insta 360 too. The go pro max is a brilliant action camera.

I double checked all of gopro's system requirements before purchase and meet all of them on my phone and laptop. However 360 photo and video will not load on my phone app for editing, and the desktop software is very limited, very slow, and crashes all the time. You are still gonna need 3rd party software to use with this desktop app to make it work. It makes actually using 360 footage tedious and slow. I was looking for a camera to do videos and panoramas to compliment my still camera rigs. The GoPro fits in my jacket pocket and is easy to use. Simple menus, 10 hrs recording on a 256gb card. The phone app is easy to use. Buy the charger and second battery. I use GoPro batteries. Charger and batteries are compact and easy to stash in my backpacks pocket. Great quality videos handling all kinds of light and conditions. Panoramas are easy to do and great quality. GoPro subscription includes unlimited cloud storage. I’m am not disappointed with this camera.
