"Extra heavy tension" is not so heavy

I bought this product with the intention of increasing my grip strength. I ordered the extra heavy tension (white version) to get the best results. I've never measured my grip strength in pounds so I wasn't sure if this tension would be too much or just enough. Turns out "extra heavy tension" is a pretty loose definition- it's quite easy to use if you've done any amount of climbing.I'm honestly a little disappointed in the amount of resistance in the product. In order to feel any sort of minor fatigue I have to squeeze this device 70-90 times in a row without stopping. However, it's not all bad. It does at least work individual fingers (but even my pinky finger doesn't have a problem with this tension). If they had a similar product with a much higher resistance ... MoreI bought this product with the intention of increasing my grip strength. Until then I suppose I'll just keep using this one with high reps... I've started to use it like a stress ball when I study.

This thing is awesome. I have never used them before but I bought the highest resistance one and I have noticed a change in my hands, fingers, and forearms in just a few weeks (Not how they look, but the way the feel and how they perform). I am on the computer a lot be it for work or school or Warcraft, and I would use this thing at the computer constantly or carry it around the house. Got a loading screen, do a few reps. On a zoom meeting? Lets get in a few squeezes. The instructions that come with it are perfect too for proper use. Easy to master. Worth every single penny.

I bought this because of weakening of my extremities most especially my left side and more specifically my wrists/hands due to a long-term diagnosis of Lyme Disease. My hands had gotten so weak and degraded that I could not hold onto a fishing rod nor effectively set the hook, and my tendons and muscles became so taught that I could not even "crack" them to relieve the pressure, although my thumbs often wanted to dislocate on their own.Well after several weeks of a bacterial antibiotic, a follow up of heavy doses of vitamin C, and the help of this exercise tool, I can finally enjoy fishing again for at least several hours at a time. I was originally worried that I could not exercise my thumbs with this product, but then I realized that if I turn it around so that my fingers touch the palm side that I can then work my thumbs with one of the separated spring levers, so problem solved. I use this while watching TV or any other time that my hands are free to do so.I do wish though that I spent the extra $5 for the "Pro" version as the palming side is a bit uncomfortable for long-time use, but I could not find one to compare at any DSG or any where else for that matter.

Fantastic
30 July 2021

Following on from a serious accident, it was requested that I purchase and use a Gripmaster Hand Exerciser. Tough going to start with but my rehabilitation has come forwards in leads and bounds by using it everyday. I prune and graft trees for a living so grip is essential, there's no way I'd be back to work so quickly if it wasn't for this great piece of equipment. (My consultant recommended using it....great advice!)

Good for training and brain distraction
6 May 2023

This is great for beginners looking to condition their hands for climbing. After a year of consistent, once per day use, I feel a tangible improvement in my grip strength.Unintentionally, use it the most at the office as a more constructive fidgeting device. It's quiet enough not to bother the guy in the next cubicle and doesn't take up much room in a drawer or backpack. Now I take it with me everywhere. I saw results faster than anticipated because it's so easy to pick up and do 10-20 reps randomly throughout the day.

Gripmaster Hand Exerciser Option: Extra Heavy
11 May 2020

This is a quality product. I bought it train to for climbing. My grade is 6A (french) and I chose the Extra Heavy exerciser which I'm happy with. I use the beast maker app (£1.99 and also good value) to set training sessions at the 6A level and the extra heavy exerciser is tough. I can't finish the exercises at present (I'm on day 2 of training) I get about half way through. But that's the idea of training, this will give me plenty of room for progression whereas one of the easier exercisers would probably have been too easy. I'm also out of shape from not climbing for 2 months. Hope that helps. M

Horrible ergonomics, good concept
16 February 2018

What kills this product is bad ergonomics. The base (that presses against your palm/thumb) is very narrow and sharp. So, long before your forearm/fingers get tired from compression, you develop pain in your palm from the base plate of the grip master digging into the root of the thumb and palm, damaging underlying tissue. Had the manufacturer made the base twice as thick and more rounded (like a pistol grip) it would have been fantastic. The secondary pain comes from the base being too short. It does not extend to the end of the palm where nice beefy tissues are, instead it ends in the bonny spot in the middle again causing great discomfort.

Just a great work out for your fingers
20 October 2021

I first used this with my Pilates Instructor and was impressed by the option of exercising all the hand or individual fingers, which is great for me. The range of resistances available is very useful and well described - I chose to start with faily easy. I just keep it to hand so it gets used every day. They are popular with musical unstrument players for toning up and it's easy to see why.

Neat little tool!
12 September 2017

This was an impulse purchase I wanted to try out to improve hand and grip strength. These are rather interesting as they provide tension for each finger rather than the whole hand and thus, the forearm. While I find it to be a novel concept I have found it doesn't do exactly what I was hoping for, however, that is my fault. To be honest though, it can be used as a whole hand grip strengthener as well. The only caveat is that the tension provided does not match a gripper dedicated to that purchase.Because of the way this product is designed I'm thinking of buying one that is lighter on tension so I can directly work the individual fingers as intended. I feel like this could definitely be beneficial for my needs and likely yours as well. The product does seem to be ... MoreThis was an impulse purchase I wanted to try out to improve hand and grip strength. It comes in many different tension levels as well thus providing an adequate use for people of all levels.Ultimately, as the title of this review states, it's a pretty neat tool. It's not going to replace a dedicated gripper and it won't likely have you squeezing apples into oblivion, but it could certainly provide a little extra grip and finger strength if you're looking for that.

Very effective finger exerciser
3 May 2016

My doctor recommended hand physical therapy due to some problems I was having. While I was at physical therapy, I noticed they wanted me to exercise my fingers with a device called the "GripMaster". I stopped physical therapy due to the high co-pay and bought my own unit to strengthen my fingers. One thing I can tell you for sure is that the "GripMaster" is extremely effective in strengthening fingers. It is built very sturdy and allows a person to exercise all fingers or even only one finger if that is all that is necessary. I really like the idea that each unit has a specified poundage tension strength. With a sponge ball or a Gripper, the tension increases as you apply more pressure.
