The GVM 800D 2-light kit really shines when you're looking for highlight and/or fill lighting on shoots. There's really not sufficient throw for much of anything other than tabletop or single-person lighting. But the kit's really solid for that. Don't think you're going to light a chorus (or even a trio) and get the light you're looking for -but don't think they're toys, either. Great Video Maker has put out some very solid gear at prices that should appeal for small video/still work.

Good for the price but I hate the app.
17 February 2021

I bought these specifically for the color changing abilities. I was hoping to light up backgrounds or use them as a hair light with fun colors. They are not very bright compared to my other lights but they are bright enough to light a background if you're using low apertures of f2.8 or lower. I did use one of them in regular mode once at 5600K and it matched my aputure lights well. I was looking forward to using the phone app so I could change colors and brightness while watching my cameras monitor. Unfortunately I hate the app. I had to go on youtube to watch a tutorial on how to sink my phone with the lights and even then it was a real pain. It's a shame because my aputure amaran 100x and 100d connect to the aputure app so quickly and easily every time and it's a pleasure to use the app. With all of that said. When you consider the price these lights are definitely worth it especially if it's just for youtube instagram tik tok etc.

Great Budget Choice, Though You Get What You Pay For
9 December 2020

When I saw the prices for these lights, saw that they came with AC adapters, stands, AND cases, I thought there must've been an error in B&H's pricing system. This light kit is easily the best bang for your buck in terms of full-ish size LEDs as of me writing this review (December 9th, 2020), but they're not without their caveats.Overall, the GVM 800D light produces a great amount of light, and the quality of the lights at 5600k and 3200k is indisputably solid. Skin tones are rendered beautifully using those two measurements. I don't run lights at mixed temps very often, so I can't speak to that Kelvin range.Plugging these lights into the wall is easy, as the cords that come with the adapter are quite long and unless the stand is fully extended to maximum ... MoreWhen I saw the prices for these lights, saw that they came with AC adapters, stands, AND cases, I thought there must've been an error in B&H's pricing system. Skin tones are rendered beautifully using those two measurements. I don't run lights at mixed temps very often, so I can't speak to that Kelvin range.Plugging these lights into the wall is easy, as the cords that come with the adapter are quite long and unless the stand is fully extended to maximum height, the cords don't seem too hazardous. Tape to secure cords and sandbags to hold the stands down are must-buy items. The fact that these lights take Sony NP-F batteries is incredibly helpful and was a major factor in my buying these lights, as I owned dozens of them already. Know that you have to have two NP-F batteries per light, so to run both of these lights at the same time on battery power, you'll need four NP-F batteries. Battery life will depend on the size/brand of battery chosen. The RGB light these lights can produce is incremental, not combinatory. They have 360 degrees of hue that they can produce, which can be adjusted on a color circle 5 degrees at a time via the GVM app. You won't be looking at individual channel control of red, green, and blue. Effectively speaking, you have 72 different color options when in RGB mode. There are areas of color that aren't as fleshed out compared to others, like the spaces between red and orange have an awkward transition period wherein the color clearly jumps from red to orange, instead of fading into one another. You can't jump across the hue circle without first spanning the hues in between them the two colors you're using. For instance, if I wanted to change my light in the middle of a shot from green to purple, I couldn't jump straight from green to purple. I would have to use the hue circle in the app to drag my light selection from green at 115 degrees through teal (180 degrees) through blue (215 degrees) and then finally I would reach purple at 255 degrees. This may be a limiting factor if your work involves specific lighting cues.Furthermore, the GVM app is quirky, to say the least. It often takes a long time to connect to these lights through my iPhone 11 Pro, and you do it via WiFi instead of Bluetooth. This means your phone likely won't be able to access the internet while using these lights, as they do not, in fact, have an internet connection. I've had times where my phone connected to the LED almost instantly and times where 10 minutes of waiting proved unfruitful, so patience and time are a must when using these lights. Eventually, they do connect, though it often takes restarting the app, turning the lights on and off, etc.The custom modes on the lights are a hidden gem feature. Cop Car, Disco, Party, Bad Bulb, TV, and Candle are all very handy features that serve niche lighting conditions, but they also encourage experimentation just by being built into the lights. The Lightning custom mode is supposed to flash a bright white strobe every once in a while, but I found it unpredictable to time and easier to just have a crew member turn the light on and off quickly to emulate lightning. So far, after a month or so of owning these lights, they have proven semi-reliable. The plastic build of the lights certainly concerns me at times, but so far no breakage. The knobs aren't dialed, so they turn infinitely, but they always function. I'm certain you'd find a product of higher quality from say, Aputure, but not for this price. If you're like me, a student, then these lights are the budget option to go for, without a doubt.

Great RGB lights for the price
2 May 2022

I do a lot of music video work and typically rent RGB lights for my shoots. I decided to buy these lights and give this brand a try since it seemed affordable and has the RGB capabilities and scene effects I typically need.Happy to say everything works as advertised and the app is pretty straightforward to get up and running.I saw no issues in terms of light quality and these are perfect for small crews since they aren't heavy, are quick to pair to the app, and you can adjust the color temperature, hue, brightness, and specialty scenes all from your phone. My only con is they aren't crazy bright, and I would have needed a bit more punch had i been shooting in a bigger space. I returned one set because it smelled like a smoky bar. The second set arrived the same way. So be aware that right out of the box, you might notice a strong chemical smell. The lights are OK. They have some nice features. The shadows are harsh and blocky even with the included diffusers. I ended up buying a soft box for one and an umbrella for the other to keep my background lighting soft. Besides needing better diffusing out of the box to make up for the gaps between the LEDs, they are decent lights. The app is handy for saving scenes, but I can only control one light at a time using Bluetooth. Not a big deal for me. Just an FYI. These Lights Are Fine
19 January 2022

Was looking for a cheap RGB lighting solution. Didn't expect to get an App at this price. Having used some more pro LED light apps, this one isn't far off. (Controlling film lights on a phone is still kinda whack). Biggest complaint there is that you can't group the D800s together and create scenes with multiple lights. Bonus would be if you could do light sequencing and do light patterns of some kind (I.e., scrolling through colors X,Y,Z at a variable speed). In general the biggest complaint is that the lights aren't step-less so there is no real clean fade in and out. So not good for any light cue-ing. The tech is there, I think. It's a problem with the software. If you use some of their preset looks you can see that the fading or color changing steps constantly. ... MoreWas looking for a cheap RGB lighting solution. Didn't expect to get an App at this price. Not great.Assuming you're working with one look at a time and you're not hoping to go from one look to another while recording then you're golden.Mine came with a soft box, it, is also fine, though it didn't come with instructions. I found that you just remove the barn doors and then you attach via Velcro straps. There are additional mounting brackets you can use but couldn't figure it out and it seemed to work fine without it. Biggest complaint there is that with the soft box on, it's harder to angle the light down. I found if you go upside down you have a little more movement ability. The included diffusion panel works great too, would be better if they included additional grades of diffusion. Or if you could buy them. The mount is there for other options. Ditto with the barn doors.Got the GVM batteries and the lifespan seems better than I've seen advertised (approx 45 minutes and I've used them for a couple hours and still have 75% remaining. hmmm but cool). Wish the batteries came with a better charger. A dual plate with a percentage and USB power is what we're used to these days. You cannot charge the batteries while the light is plugged in, which is too bad. You have to remove them from the light first. The light stands are fine too, a little better than some other bottom shelf stands I've had in the past. Time will tell. The bag, as well, is better than some other bottom shelf bags. And it fits everything the kit comes with compactly (with a little room to spare). Fits under the bed. Would benefit from more internal organization. Straps snf pockets would be nice.Unfortunately, you can't pan the lights in their U-bracket / yoke. You have to loosen the attachment to the light-stand to pan. So you can. Just not the way you'd think. As a semi-professional jack-of-all-trades, I like these lights and would recommend them. Definitely happy after tinkering for a couple of hours, especially considering their price. Looks good on video and with stills. Looks good at 24fps and at 60fps. Stay on the look out for more from GVM, I certainly will.If they turn out to be terrible, I will update this review.

Versatile Uses
3 January 2022

These lights have so many uses depending on what you're trying to accomplish it's not even funny. Making a video for social media? Trying to record for an audition? Hosting your own show or event? There is a lighting balance and setting perfect for what you're trying to accomplish. One of these stands dropped out of the bag as we were putting it away, and I contacted the actual manufacturer for these stands and lights directly per B&H's instructions. They said they would send us a new stand to replace the broken one, but we never received it.This does not impact my review but is just something that should be noted. We still use one of the lights because only one stand is functional, but both work fine.

fun lights, terrible app, also not very bright

I really liked them for a tiny green screen and blue screen chroma thing I did, but these lights are not very bright at all. I like the stands, and wow will they tip over obviosuly if you side mount the lights (which is cool they milled the body so you can do that). The case is very weakly stitched together and will fail with any moderate use, so don't carry it all around in that. storage, ok, but that's it.the app is hot trash. it controls ONE light, and then you make the second a slave (try to change the wording on that it's 2020). then when you do put the other in that mode, guess what? colors shift at the same time but in different placement. blue 1, green 2, then it will rotate in proportion to the first for both. lol.the colors are fine, the light patterns ... MoreI really liked them for a tiny green screen and blue screen chroma thing I did, but these lights are not very bright at all.
