A bit overrated but helpful (watch for spills!)

I bought this because everyone raved about it and it’s pretty cheap. And I do use it in the morning when my let-down is heavy. Even so, I only get 1-2 oz using this. The major downside is that if it loses its suction (and it does!!), your liquid gold goes flying. I’ve lost countless ounces of milk to my baby kicking it off or it just falling off. I try to remember to re-suction it every few mins. But who’s kidding? New moms don’t have that kind of brain power. If I have another baby, I’ll probably use the ladybug instead. Its suction isn’t as powerful, but it sits in your nursing bra, so it’s less likely to spill everywhere.

A great tool to help build a stash!

With my first baby, I thought I just had to accept the fact that I was going to leak milk and be a soggy mess on one side when my baby fed on the other. I went through the first nearly 4 months leaking and losing milk before my supply regulated and things were a bit more under control. The second time around, I had heard about using silicone breast pumps to catch milk on one side while nursing on the other. I bought the Haakaa right before my second baby was born and employed it right away. I bought the Haakaa right before my second baby was born and employed it right away. I had a difficult time figuring out how to get it suctioned at first, but after a bit of practice I was able to get it figured out. It was also difficult to get a consistent suction as a session would typically start with a breast that was hard as a bowling ball and about the same size and end with a breast more resembling a deflated beachball. My biggest problem was trying to juggle a little squish of a newborn and keep from knocking the pump of my breast and spilling everywhere. I have a short torso and had a c-section, so there wasn't a ton of room for baby, a pillow, and the pump. I found that more often than not, I would use it more after a nursing session to pump to comfort if I was feeling engorged on the side that baby didn't feed on. I really like the suction base, though found that it didn't suction on many surfaces in the baby's room where I was normally feeding (wood window sills and wood furniture).I absolutely loved that it typically caught 1-2 ounces every session, allowing me to passively build up a decent freezer stash in the first month without starting actively pumping. Initially, I was concerned that all the milk was foremilk, but then a lactation consultant informed me that you can get your milk to be more consistent throughout a feeding my giving your breast a good jiggle prior to the nursing/pumping session. I noticed a difference in my milk content immediately with this tip!My overall impressions are that the Haakaa was a great way to make sure I caught all leaking milk during a session, and it provided an easy way to relieve discomfort without overpumping and stimulating increased production. The cons I found were that it was a bit cumbersome to use and took some getting used to. It's easy to use and the design allows you to easily transfer milk from the pump to a bottle or bag for storage.

I have been using the without the suction base and loved it. When I saw this one, I had to get it! The flower stopper is cute and it definitely catches milk. The problem however is that this one has detached on me too many times now! It seems to get too heavy and just pops right off. Super frustrating! I would highly recommend the one that doesn’t come with the base because that one has never detached on me and made me lose milk.

Didn’t work for me
24 October 2021

I have to give this a low rating I’m sorry, as it didn’t work for me at all. I found it quite painful, even though I’d been breastfeeding for a good six months when I got it. I thought it would be a good alternative to an electric pump which I couldn’t afford, but I needed to pump to keep up my supply while my baby was getting formula top ups. At best I was able to get a few drops in the bottom, at worst the few drops in the bottom were bloodstained. I do know an actual human in real life that swore by your pump when she had a baby though, and I’ve seen people in my NZ Facebook groups recommend it so clearly it does work for some women. Equally though I’ve seen many women online for whom it did not work. Equally though I’ve seen many women online for whom it did not work. I was able to buy a hand pump with a handle which did the trick for me, and later an electric pump which worked even better.I’ve given you a generous two stars though, because every time I’ve had blocked ducts, the Epsom salts trick has worked a treat to unblock them. Unfortunately this product was useless to me in place of a breast pump, which is the main reason for me shelling out money for the Haakaa. Also why oh why would you not include a lid or flower with each pump? You need something to be able to seal it off, especially if you’re using it to catch letdown, the baby could easily kick it over while you’re finishing the feed. For the price of this, which you can get a cheap electric pump for less, it needs to include some sort of cap. All the other breast pumps do. It’s heartbreaking to spill even a drop of precious milk, and with no cap, that’s what we’re risking each time.

God’s Gift...Must Have for Breastfeeding!!!
12 January 2020

I have an oversupply issue with breastfeeding where my newborn daughter (2nd child) will feed for 20-45 minutes but then I’ll still end up pumping 8 oz of milk with my Medela to relieve engorgement. It made things extremely painful and difficult especially the lack of sleep at night. Then my lactation consultant said to get the Haakaa and OH MY GOD, it is a god send!!! Now, I can feed my daughter while getting 5 oz of milk out from the other breast. Even better, I can walk around while feeding and “pumping” taking care of other things like throwing away her diaper or changing her if need be, washing my hands, getting the milk storage bag ready, labeling it, swaddling her etc while the HaaKaa does it’s magic. I can take the Haakaa off while still feeding to put 4oz of milk in the storage bag and then put the HaaKaa back on to catch the rest w/o worrying about spilling any. My let down happens fast w/ or w/o my daughter on the breast so getting the “pumping” started has never been an issue with the HaaKaa, the suction is super easy and comfortable compared to my Medela. There’s nothing worse than feeding, then pumping then having to clean what feels like million pieces to a breast pump at 3am with 2 hours of sleep! With the Haakaa I can do all that while feeding basically and it’s only one piece to clean which is super easy to do as well. I’m absolutely in love with this HaaKaa breast pump! Thank god for its invention. I have literally been suffering since my milk came in and I can finally feel relieved, save time and milk. I would soak through 3 shirts while feeding and my daughter would get soaked as well, now I can save all that milk.

Great Alternative When Pump Isn't Available
25 May 2023

While on vacation my portable pump broke and I didn’t know what to do. I found this and thought I would give it a try. I originally thought I would literally be hand pumping but you don’t. Attach it while you are nursing and it collects everything that I’m assuming would just go into a breast pad. The suction is literally better than my actual pump! I would recommend if you need something for traveling or when pump isn’t available. It’s much faster than I imagined and I collected the same oz as normal.

Great for early stages of breastfeeding!
9 April 2023

If you're looking for a true manual pump, then keep looking--I wouldn't call this a manual "pump" as much as a milk collection system. However, I still highly recommend it--it does its job well! I would recommend this in particular for moms with forceful letdowns or those who leak on the other side when you have a letdown--your milk will be leaving your body anyways, so you may as well catch and save it lol. Starting when my milk came in, I'd feed baby on one side and attach this on the other side to catch the let down--doing this just occasionally in just the first few weeks, I was able to collect over 50oz to add to my freezer stash (which would have been wasted into nursing pads or a burp cloth otherwise). Late night engorgment relief!
2 November 2022

I was recommended this by my lactation consultant for late night engorgement relief. My newborn has been sleeping for up to 5 hours at a time at night which is great for sleep, but leaves my breasts very engorged by the time baby is ready to feed next. I’ve had been pumping in between feeding sessions, but was getting tired of the uncomfortableness and cleaning tiny parts after each pumping session. This product is a game changer! I get just as much milk from my Haakaa as I do from my pump. The Haakaa is A LOT more comfortable and doesn’t leave me sore. It is a lot more convenient to clean too! I was worried that it would be hard to pour milk from the Haakaa to milk storage bags, but the spout is basically like a funnel and gives surprisingly good pouring control. Love it!
20 May 2024

I love this Haakaa breast pump. Since my baby only likes to drink on one side, it’s so helpful to suction the other breast to collect my let-down. I love the suction base since I’ve had so many other branded pumps fall and spill milk everywhere before. The suction is great and I love that it’s easy to sterilize in my steamer. The wide base also makes it easy to clean. The only con is that I do not like the flower stopper. Like other Haakaa breast pumps that I have, I prefer the silicone lid so I can easily drop it in the fridge or secure it better incase it drops on the floor. Otherwise, this breast pump trumps all other brands, I cannot recommend it enough! I have a growing collection of four in various sizes since you can never have enough for travel, work, home, etc.

This saved me from switching to formula!
27 July 2023

This haakaa is absolutely amazing! I knew my milk supply was fine during nursing, but I was about to transition my baby to formula at 7 months because I absolutely could not get an electric pump to express my milk anymore. I got the haakaa hoping it would help and it has been the best thing. I just use it on one side when my son nurses and I gather milk easily with very little effort. No need to be near an outlet, no hunching over, no restriction of movement, and no spending hours trying to pump. I especially love that when my son is done, I can stand up and take him to his play area and the haakaa stays secure on my breast until I remove it. I've had this less than 48 hours, have only used it a few times, and already have 3 bottles in the fridge!
