The optical quality of this scope pleasantly surprised me, however, this product is by no means flawless.The specs specify 20mm of eye relief, but that's only at the lowest magnification, and the eye relief drops significantly at higher magnifications, to a point where I struggled to see the entire field of view with glasses above 35x or so.Additionally, adjusting the magnification does bring the scope out of focus, so you have to adjust the focus every time you adjust the magnification.I consider these issues acceptable at this price point, but they may or may not be a deal breaker for others.

What an amazing surprise this purchase was. Ive bought about a half-dozen lowish-priced scopes over the years, including a Trophy XLT, C90, Ultima 80 Vanguard HD-65A, and thoroughly lacklustre Vortex Diamondback 60... and this newly revamped Hawke Nature-Trek is (by far) the best of the bunch.What first struck me is the overall look and feel of the scope. It looks like it should cost at least twice as much. And then theres the eyepiece: its BIG!--as in 2 inches wide big. The ocular lens is a hair under an inch wide. The main benefit of a large EP in this case is an above average apparent field of view: 42 deg. (16x) - 67 deg. (48x); those are impressive numbers at this price point, and 67 deg. is very close to being super/extra wide angle. The broad and grippy ... MoreWhat an amazing surprise this purchase was. The main benefit of a large EP in this case is an above average apparent field of view: 42 deg. (16x) - 67 deg. (48x); those are impressive numbers at this price point, and 67 deg. is very close to being super/extra wide angle. The broad and grippy zoom ring is moderately stiff but smooth and well damped, and devoid of any metal-to-metal scratchiness.The image quality is also impressive: sharp, contrasty, neutral, and with very low levels of chromatic aberration (even at 48x!). Im not exaggerating when I say that the image at 48x is actually better than what the Vanguard HD-65A could deliver at that same magnification (keep in mind that the Hawke is not a special/ED lens scope!). Which brings me to another thing I like about this scope: the zoom range. 16x-48x is ideal in the 60/65mm class of scopes, instead of the usual 20x-60x found elsewhere (if theres a non-ED 60mm scope that gives a good image beyond 50x, I havent found it).Next is the focuser. It feels sooooo nice! Buttery smooth, direct, and zero image shift when teetering the knob. In other words, the polar opposite of what I experienced with the Diamondbacks abysmal focuser.And now for the (very few) cons: For starters, that fold-down eyecup is frankly archaic (though truth be told, Id rather have that than the dinky-feeling twisty found on the Vortex). Second is the tripod mounting shoe: While very rigid and offering a large mounting surface, the long-end of the shoe should be pointing rearward instead of forward. This scope is rear-heavy and a rear-pointing shoe would significantly help with the tilt balance (note that this is likely less of an issue with the 80mm model). The final (minor) niggle is the lack of a straight-view model. (None of these cons are serious enough to warrant a star deduction.)So unless youre really hung up on VIP warranties, then this scope is, in my humble opinion, the very best scope you can buy at this price range (heck, it would still be an amazing deal at twice the price).
