I'm not sure why the XL was discontinued. I have this backpack in Youth XL;and now the new Youth size. The XL is about 2 inches taller;but the Youth is large enough for my 3rd grader's stuff;and a more comfortable size for her small build. It is a large enough size through 5th/6th grade. The new Youth size is also more lightweight and feels less stiff when worn. BUT it comes at a price. The bottom of the XL is 3 layers and feels very durable;while the new one is a single layer; not even lined. It feels pretty flimsy for a backpack that will hold school books;and I'm worried how it'll hold up. Also;on the new one;only the back is lined- there is no lining on the inside front panel either. I'm not sure if that's an advantage or disadvantage;because is is more ... MoreI'm not sure why the XL was discontinued. I have this backpack in Youth XL;and now the new Youth size. But in my opinion;leaving the bottom unlined comes across as cheap and makes the backpack a lot less durable. I hope it'll last nicely;but Herschel;please (double) line the bottom of the Youth backpacks like you did with the XL.Pros:*Large enough without being too large*Good zippers;laptop sleeve and front pocket*Sternum strap is easy to adjust or remove*Water bottle pocket*Zipper pulls are tied more smartly- they look cute and won't go missing like on the old one (cosmetic only)Cons:*Not as durable as the old style. Only the back is lined;and the rest of the backpack;including the bottom is a single layer.

Last time bought it was double liner. Now only one side has the liner and the bottom use to be has double and has liner and it was thick. Now supper light and thin, we well see how the bag last when the school year start. Last time bought 2 years ago it was nice and has liner so y Son use the bag for two years its only little faded but still good because it was thick and has double liner inside and the bottom has thick canvas. This new backpack for my son so disappointed.

I recently purchased two backpacks;the Heritage backpack youth in purple Tie Dye (for my almost 5-year-old daughter) and the Settlement Backpack in Rainbow Tie Dye (for my 7-year-old daughter). They both love the bright colours and fun tie dye designs. The heritage backpack youth size is a bit big;which is helpful for fitting lunch along with a change of clothes or shoes. The water bottle holder on the outside of the backpack is helpful;though it would be nice if it were deeper and more stretchy (sort of only fits a small child-size bottle;which is OK unless they use a big size). The settlement backpack is obviously a bit big on my 7-year-old;but she loved the colour and pattern and with the straps fully tightened it works. Only downside is there is no water bottle ... MoreI recently purchased two backpacks;the Heritage backpack youth in purple Tie Dye (for my almost 5-year-old daughter) and the Settlement Backpack in Rainbow Tie Dye (for my 7-year-old daughter). I’d say the quality is only good — not excellent — but I didn’t take a star away for this as the quality matched my expectations at this price point (especially on sale). So no;it may not last more than a couple years (they’ve only used for a day;so I could be wrong). But I’m OK with that at this price. Also customer service is outstanding;so should something go wrong more quickly I have confidence it will be addressed quickly. Fully recommend. I initially ordered different backpacks and had no problem returning.

I recently purchased this for my daughter for kindergarten. The quality is so nice. It has large sturdy zippers, a nice deep side pocket for her large water cup, a front pouch and inside pocket. This also has the torso buckle to help it stay on when she has it loaded. We went a size larger for her age to fit a 3 ring binder for school. Highly suggest this product and thinking about getting myself one too for travel.
Just received out Heritage Kids Backpack. Here's my initial impression:Pros:- Great quality. Seems to be very well made. We got the Woodland print and it's very nice!- Shipping was fast- Fits my 3.5 year old really good, sits exactly where it should on her back and she can easily put it on herself and carry it around with ease. She says it's comfy!- It fits all that she needs right now for preschool. She's got a change of clothes, her lunch kit, water bottle, and inhaler/chamber.Cons:- It is much smaller than I was expecting. When she goes into Kindergarten she will need something bigger as she will be needing to bring more things. I do wish I would of sized up to the Youth for her, but this will do for now. This would definitely be too small for kids older ... MoreJust received out Heritage Kids Backpack. Here's my initial impression:Pros:- Great quality. Seems to be very well made. This would definitely be too small for kids older than 5years, possibly 4years.Overall, it is a great backpack and will do what we need for now. I chose the size based on the age description given for the Kids size, which I do think is very off. I should of read the reviews about the sizing. That being said, when it comes to getting another one that's bigger, I will be ordering another Herschel.
The Hershel Heritage Youth Backpack is the perfect size for elementary school age kids (my son is in 3rd grade). The bright color and simple design make it both fun and timeless. My only feedback is that the zippers can be a little tougher to unzip than the average zipper. Not sure if it’s the plastic material (vs. metal) or the slightly larger tooth size. We make do and have learned to expect the little resistance, but just something for the designers to consider in the future. Overall, would definitely purchase it again.
I bought this youth backpack and comparing it to my last purchase two years ago you can tell the redesign came with some cost cutting measures. The backpack that was beautifully lined (with the PERFECT washable material) on all sides and zip pocket is now only lined on the back panel for the tablet sleeve;bye bye durability. The straps and handles are not the former strong material but a slippery;more narrow strap. Whilst before I thought this was an amazing product worth the price;I now see little difference to competitors products. The only reason I'm keeping it is because the child already has an emotional attachment to the backpack. Sad about the update as I had recommended this model to a few families.
Bought the Star Wars Rebel pattern, which my son loves, but the bag is so small. The measurements are the exterior size, and the material is so thick, the interior is much smaller. He can barely fit one book and a folder in the bag. He’s only 6, so I was hoping the Youth size would last for a few years since it’s labeled as 8-12 years old, but at this point I’ll be surprised if he can use it next year! Disappointed as they aren’t inexpensive. I don’t understand how others are able to make this size work. May depend on material. So order with caution! But in my case, I wish we sized up. Herschel wouldn’t let me exchange as the bag was used (the only way we discovered it was too small).
Purchased a new heritage youth backpack for my daughter who has outgrown her old Herschel toddler backpack. The youth looks like the same size!! How is this tiny bag supposed to be for a 8-12 year old? Herschel obviously made a massive mistake here. I should also add the decision to not fully line the interior of the bag anymore as well as removing the inner flap seems cheap. Really bizarre to change things for the worse and confuse everyone with bad sizing. Will return and now have to find another brand. Don’t make the same mistake I did and find something larger.
I bought this backpack three years ago when my then almost three year old started Pre-k;she is now five and still using it - it fits her folder;lunchbox;water bottle and a pair of gloves nicely but that's about it unless you really shove something in there. It will hold a one inch binder but it's hard to zip around the corners of the binder and I think would be really hard for her to do by herself. My daughter is on the small size and it did look a little big on her when we got it but anything smaller just wouldn't fit what we need - she has grown into it nicely but I'm not sure it will fit all the things she needs for Kindergarten. We're going to try and see how it goes.I highly reccomend the patterned bags - they hide dirt so well it still basically looks brand ... MoreI bought this backpack three years ago when my then almost three year old started Pre-k;she is now five and still using it - it fits her folder;lunchbox;water bottle and a pair of gloves nicely but that's about it unless you really shove something in there. After two and a half years of use (and occasionally being dragged on the ground behind her) it's just starting to show a bit of wear in the corners and the straps are a bit dirty but a quick wash would probably help with that. The colors are still vibrant;the zippers work well (though the paint is falling off of the metal zipper pull). The water bottle pocket is a bit small but will fit some water bottles that are slim;it doesn't really fit a kids hydro flask with the rubber on the bottom;but there's room inside for that.Overall;it's a really beautiful rugged little backpack and I just bought another for my second daughter;and I would plan to buy one for my third but I think one of her sister's packs will be in good enough shape to hand down!
