Mine stays open at 55+, I tested it today. To be fair, I ride a Road King and the windshield may deflect more wind so it can stay open at higher speeds, or maybe his was just not as strong as mine. The chin bar opens and closes easy enough, no complaints there. In the open position, it stays real close to the helmet, so its not sticking way up like most modulars, even the Shuberth and the Shoei sit higher than this one. One other thing, I used a Bell helmet before I got this one and at highway speeds I got alot of buffeting, with this one there is absolutely NO buffeting, very well designed to break up the wind from all directions. I mounted a Cardo system to it instead of using the Sena setup that it is pre-setup for. Didn't have any issues and the boom mike sits in a good position so it doesn't interfere with the chin bar when it goes up and down. All in all, I feel in alot of ways, this helmet stands up to the highest end modulars, but costs a couple hundred less. I used to think HJC was only known for making cheap helmets, but things have changed. The RPHA 91 is in no way a cheap helmet. I highly recommend to anyone looking for a modular helmet.

And the flexibility of opening the outer visor to catch extra air at lower speeds is great. It's also easy to open the chin part at stops/really low speeds for maximum air. No new pics needed as it looks just like the photos on the website. This is a very nice helmet and the fit is true HJC, based on other HJC helmets owned and tried on, with only a couple of caveats. There is small "hot-spot" pressure point at the middle of my forehead, and the speaker pockets are a bit shallow for the high-def speakers on a Sena 50S. A little "massaging" the hot spot area helps but I'm not quite sure on how to deepen the speaker pockets so they don't rub on my ears.Otherwise, I love the helmet. It is very lightweight, and quiet, has great airflow and the ability to ride with the chin bar in the up position is awesome, even at highway speeds.

One of the things I LOVE about the prior RPHA 90 was how firm and solid the detents are when moving the visor up and down. I live and ride in Florida and with the heat will often ride with the visor fully opened using sunglasses and/or the interior dark shield that flips down - at least until I get up to over 50 mph or so, where will then manually close the visor. With the older helmets, the visor stays open. With this new RPHA 91, the design of the detents and pegs on the visor that interface with them is totally different and MUCH softer and weaker than the older helmets. The visor moves up and down very easily but the down side is that as soon as you reach 30-40 mph the wind force slams the visor shut and you can't make it stat open above those speeds even if you want to, the detents are just not strong enough, And to be clear I'm referring to the visor only, not the actual opening of the chin bar, which, when opened and especially when locked open is quite robust and solid. The aforementioned issue with the too-weak detents on the visor is the ONlY gripe I have about the new helmet, but for me it's a big one. I sort of solved it by taking off the visor and added a small piece of heat shrink to each of the black pegs that interface with the detents - effectively making them a tiny bit larger in diameter. I also cut with scissors a couple of 1/8" wide slivers from an unused gift card and placed them in the slot across from the detent teeth making the counter force on the peg a little stronger. It's snug fitting the visor back in place but it's more solid on opening and closing and staying open. I may have to periodically repeat the heat shrink as it will get worn down opening and closing on the detent teeth but that's easily enough and costs me nothing but a minute or two of time. HJC can address this by making the black pegs on the visor a hair larger in diameter, and it looks like those are screwed in so it could be done.Other than the above issue, the helmet looks and fits great, the ventilation is awesome and noticebley better than the prior HJC RPHA90/s (not that it was lacking in those), and is fairly quiet.I installed on the helmet my Cardo Packtalk Edge which is AWESOME. I use earbuds (specifically Linsoul KZ ZS10 Pros with Comply sport memory foam eartips) with the Cardo as opposed to the helmet mounted speakers the Cardo comes with. I find those earbuds, since they are flat on the outer shell don't press hard into my ear and are block out ALOT more sound than either the Cardo helmet speakers or the HJC helmet by itself. The hi fit sound with the earbuds is also FAR superior even than the Cardo's JBL helmet speakers.But back to the helmet review. It's a great helmet, I measured out at Large and it was true to size. I just wish they had made the visor detents stronger like they were with the prior RPHA 90 and 90s where I didn't have to rig it to work the way I need it to.The picture attached shows where I added the sliver from the cut gift card. There is a round black pin on the visor that fits into the groove opposite that where you see the detent "teeth". The visor pins are a smidge too small in diameter and the teeth are not able to engage it strong enough to keep the visor open at speeds above 35-ish, unless you have a very tall windscreen on your bike that blocks wind from the front of the helmet more than mine does.

The lining on the interior brow of the helmet is lined very nicely with a soft material which transitions very abruptly along a sewn seam into a course, cheap feeling fabric, and the seam is very noticeable. I can not imagine how unpleasant that would feel after a day of 70 MPH wind blast moving my head about on the road. I watched an episode of Seinfeld wearing the RPHA 91 while my wife laughed at me and that was enough of that seam for me. My verdict is that this is an excellent helmet that would fight admirably in the $300-400 range, but in the mid fives it misses the mark.Sadly, the search for a new hat goes on as I returned this one and will continue to wear my old Shoei GT Air which Spock returned before I bought it, didn't like the ear holes.
I love the idea of the helmet because it can be worn open. However, the fit is far from being acceptable. I ordered the extra-large size as my head measurement was 61 cm. It was so tight that I couldn't stand to have it on for more than a few minutes. I then ordered the 2X liner as the shell was the same for both. This fit better but it still pinched my forehead so much that it was hard to keep my eyes open. At this point the helmet is useless to me and I'd like to send it back for a different helmet, but I don't know if this is possible. RevZilla completed my order on time and was easy to deal with, but this helmet is terrible.
After wearing Shoei helmets for decades, I decided to try a modular helmet again. I had a first generation NeoTec, but switched to the RF series helmets for lighter helmet and perceived better protection. This HJC modular had many more features than the current NeoTec and was $100 cheaper.First impressions are that the fit is true to size, vision is a wider view than the Shoei, as well as better air flow and much, much quieter. The only negative is pressure on my ears, causing discomfort with the custom ear plugs that I wear. After wearing for awhile to better fit the liner to the shape of my head, I'm hoping this pain goes away. I had a first generation NeoTec, but switched to the RF series helmets for lighter helmet and perceived better protection. Pulling a full face helmet down over my ears would always yank the aids out. Now, I can keep them on while running errands around town because of the large opening of this modular helmet's design.
Worst HJC helmet I've ever owned. The RPHA 90 was a great helmet and I've always liked my other HJC helmets but this one is a disaster.First the only good thing is that it has great airflow.The Bad: noisy, no way to block airflow at the chin in cold weather, neck roll won't stay installed, pops off every time I use it and causes pain in my neck where it rubs. In a light rain shower it leaked horribly and water got between the pinlock and the visor causing scratches that ruined both pieces, something I've never seen in 25 years of riding. Worst helmet in a rain I've ever owned, leaks everywhere. The visor locks down so firmly that to raise it you have to pull so hard it almost pulls the helmet off your head and it causes ear buds to come loose. Others complain ... Others complain about the opposite problem with it not staying up but the detents are all so stiff on mine it causes this opposite problem. The thing flows too much air, I'm constantly getting debris in my eyes, once a full sized fruit fly got in through a vent at 70 mph and survived to crawl around on the sun visor.I hate it so much I just went back to my old RPHA 90, a superior helmet in every way. This one will have to just serve as a backup or extreme hot weather helmet to try to get something for the $600 I wasted on it.Avoid at all costs! HJC, you need a redesign ASAP.
I really liked this helmet until I didn't.This helmet is very comfortable, if a bit heavy, not too bad, but not light. The aerodynamics are great, especially with the face up! The way the face sits when lifted makes it fantastic as a sun visor, better than the beak on any other helmet I have. I returned the helmet under warranty when I couldn't operate the dark internal visor anymore. It would get glitchy from dust and I'd blow it out, but then one time no matter how much compressed air I blew through it, it wouldn't budge. Also the little things that holds the face up for open face certification disappeared while the face was up and it fell down on some bumps and made me do a faceplant because I couldn't see all of a sudden.
